While the standard of many Indie games is truly on another level when compared with the formative days of download gaming, there's often a level of deja-vu and familiarity in their appearance. With engines like Unity prominent small developers have a challenge to make their titles look unique; as a result we think it's worth celebrating when a title adopts approaches such as pixel-based visuals, and more importantly does them well.
Children of Morta by Texas-based developer Dead Mage fits the profile, as it incorporates pixel visuals with some lovely animation and effects. The project is a hack 'n slash story-based adventure with a whole family - the Bergsons - available as playable characters, each with their own unique styles and movesets. Throw in roguelike elements with procedural levels and some optional local co-op, and there are the foundations of a positive project.
It's coming to the Wii U, too, having sailed passed its Kickstarter target of $65,000 and surpassing the $100,000 stretch goal for Nintendo's system. As it looks so stylish and promises depth and substance to match, we're rather looking forward to watching this progress in 2015.
You can see the Kickstarter pitch below; will you be keeping an eye out for this one on Wii U?

Looks good. Glad this got funded. Still waiting to see whether or not the 3 ks projects I backed will come out.
Now if only Starr Mazer could reach its Wii U stretch goal.
Must have.
I'll pass on this.
If it is 4 player couch co-op i may get it
This is the best-looking, most promising thing to come out of a Kickstarter since Hyper Light Drifter. The future is bright.
@Retro_on_theGo I would love to see that. But it doesn't look likely.
Looks great!
Looks hella fun, especiallywith local co-op.
Man, they can just put the time in and translate the code for Wii U. They will still make money. This is just a way to get more of a bonus in their pockets.
This looks really cool, but why is it that more and more crowdfunding projects go for this specific artstyle?
Ever since Hyper Light Drifter, I've seen at least 5 other successful projects that looked mighty similar and employed a strong theme of mystery as it's central point. Not that I'm against it, but it kinda takes away the facination behind HLD...
So close to an Xbox One release. However not interested in the whole pixel retro graphics games so I'm not interested in it but still good the Wii U goal was reached.
Im waiting for the vast majority of these kickstarters ive read about on here to come out. I wonder how many actually will
I am very, very bored of pixel art games. I'm old enough for it not to seem that long ago that we praised pixel art games (or just 'games' as we called them then) for their amazing, ever more realistic, graphics. As such, novelty or nostalgia this sort of stylisation might have once had wore off a couple of years ago. That said, this does look pretty polished and I'll keep an eye out for it.
Now, what happened to Trine? wasn't that meant to be coming out for Wii U this winter?
Looks utterly beautiful to me, so I'll definitely get this [if it gets decent reviews].
Never heard of this one. Makes me think one of NL's editors used to show a weekly list of kickstarters
Fantastic!
I was surely going to buy it, but now I am surely waiting for the Wii U version.
And I'd like to see a report about those KS projects, that have not reached Wii U mile stone yet from time to time.
Eh. Still waiting for strength of the sword personally. If they're pulling of the family clique in this one they better do it good.
Looking good! What's with the names, though? "Morta", "Dead"; mmmh, I see a pattern here...
Looks great, cant wait to play this.
Wow... at first i thought... again a pixel game?... it start to get a little bit too much now i think
then i watched and thought... oh it looks very different from the other pixel games ... oh this looks reallly cool ... oh i want this, this seems to be awesome!
"whole story told"
love the freestyle animation. It's very fluid and let's itself exaggerate into abstraction.
Gameday: must have ~
I didn't actually know they had added a Wii U stretch goal, and passed it. I'd have backed it otherwise, but this is great. I'm very likely to get it when it comes out.
Another game, Starr Mazer, wrapped up its campaign just yesterday, and got dangerously close to it's Wii U stretch. So close that they may announce the decision to go for Wii U anyway.
If Children of Morta plays half as well as it looks, then it should be a real treat!
Wii U version aside, I'm glad this got funded!
@NImH Same thoughts man, looks like a cousin to hyper light drifter without all of the futuristic stuff, and i have the demo, its extremely fun. So glad I kickstarted it, wish i woulda known about this one.
Looks very nice!
