Figuring out lore in our favourite franchises can be a dangerous game and a potential road to madness, but it's also irresistible to try and apply logic to seemingly disconnected titles. Dedicated fans know that even the official Nintendo timeline for The Legend of Zelda, for example, has elements of retrospective improvisation, and with decades of games under its belt the company has had to bend rules on multiple occasions.
The Pokémon franchise has its own lore, of course, and a huge fanbase dedicated to picking apart the details of the anime series, movies and games. The latest Game Freak entries - Pokémon X & Y and Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire - have introduced new principles (such as Mega Evolutions) and plotlines that have made a host of new theories possible. Just recently those hacking the games found hidden Pokémon that, potentially, add a whole new dimension to proceedings.

Now we have a new hat thrown into the ring by popular YouTube channel The Game Theorists, which combines a serious idea and a light-hearted approach to pick up on clues from the 3DS games and speculate on the very foundations of the series. There are naturally spoilers for those still playing the recent games, including details and references to the Delta Episode content in ORAS.
Even if talk of meta physics and alternate dimensions seems a little too far-fetched, this is nevertheless fairly entertaining. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Omega and Alpha weren't money grabbers. We spent at least a year begging for them
I'm not sure that the author of the article realised he had a great chance to add in a Farfetch'd pun
I don't like when they apply a games limits to a theory. The idea the link cable represents a portal into another world? No, I ain't buying that. Good Theory though. I love tragic backstories that are only mere legions!
EH.
I used to hate Game Theory because I thought MatPat was completely up his own... Ho-oh, but I've grown to love it and him! His theories are always incredibly entertaining and enlightening. I especially enjoyed the one about Majora's Mask being Link's limbo after he died.
@Doge More like seven
Haha I love this stuff.
Cool just like the other episodes!
'But hey, that's just a theory, A Game Theory. Thanks for watching...' Freaking love that line...
@Crimson_Ridley It's not like that was HIS theory or anything.
Ah a new Game Theory episode, yes that is what my day was missing. Love these guys
How everyone sees ORAS:
Pokemon Fans: "Stop being so greedy, Nintendo! Rerelease Pokemon RSE already!"
Other Gamers: "Stop being so greedy, Nintendo! Stop rereleasing your products already!
It didn't really seem like anything that informative. He's talked about the multiverse before, and loads of fans have already speculated a many-worlds theory for Pokémon. And, on a side note, I felt he left out a few key points about Schrödinger's Cat. I feel like people who aren't familiar with the thought experiment might wonder why we're taking about whether or not it's dead.
@Nicolai C'mon, we all watch The Big Bang Theory.
@Obito_Sigma how I see it:
STOP being dumb VGA, GTA V for X1/PS4 is not a remaster. ORAS WINS YOU Noobs.
A very interesting theory from MatPat.It's kind of cool to think of my own Pokemon game being in its own universe.But what I'm curious about is if there will be a Pokemon game where one of the evil teams succeeds in their mission and brings the world to chaos.In other words,THAT'D MAKE A GREAT IDEA FOR A FANFIC!
that theory is just grating. personally i think the games never even implied that there were separate universes until Pokemon Black/White where the Entralink is explicitly mentioned into visiting other worlds, at first the slight differences was to emphasize cultural/natural divergences like futuristic cities or a more traditional town.
Only problem is that there's still unknown questions; perhaps the core foundation in all universes always had Primal Pokemon, just that the 2nd time they awoke...it either happened, or AZ wasn't around to tell the the Draconids from (three-thousand years ago) back then about Mega Evolution; which explains why the mural is in such pristine condition in the Remake universe whilst the Original universe had a long winding cave.
Its also possible that we could take the Arceus theory, in that whenever an Egg is produced, the universe attempts to form a Pokemon that is within parameters which wouldn't be a problem for non-legendaries. however Arceus had to create entire universes just to hand you a single time-space trio member. so 1 Pokemon dieing wouldn't matter, but the infinity Energy was found in the Altered Universe which may have been "tainted" but crystalized Paradoxes -OR- the universes way of preserving deceased a deceased Pokemon's impact on the universe. now the only mystery is how did AZ supposedly obtain a "necronomicon" of some kind.
Unless the distortion world is immune from universal disturbances which may enable common humans to transcend universes without Hoopa Hoops, though this would essentially bend logic in multiple Giratina, unless the 2 events are canon?
probably have to draw a picture or something...
MULTIPLE DIMENSIONS CNFRMD!!!
I've been following his YouTube channel for a while. His interpretations are well thought out and while I may not always agree with his conclusions I do respect the effort he puts into his arguments.
@Plucky In ORAS it's specifically stated that the device used to create the portal to the other dimension is called the Link Cable, you can't argue with what's cannon. Using that logic it's only safe to assume that using the link cable on two Gameboys is the equivalent of bridging BOTH dimensions so things can be sent in, and out, instead of just being sent in as the meteor was planned to do.
From what we can tell, the hero in R/S interrupted Groudon/Kyogre before they could begin absorbing energy in the Cave of Origin, while in ORAS it's a little too late for that.
@Plucky .....
...
I thought I knew Pokémon. Like, really knew it. But that was the biggest batch of mumbo jumbo I've ever seen and I understood not one sentence. My whole foundation of understanding now crumbles beneath me.
@bro2dragons It's cannon and clearly stated in ORAS.
I can't be the only guy who finds that guy's voice incredibly grating, right?
@TheAtariKid I don't. I watched an episode and really didn't like it.
How is this even a theory? It says everything he's trying to theorise, is actually said in the game, it IS actually cannon. Bad "theory" is bad.
@Crimson_Ridley I use to think the same thing but then I just found it interesting how deep he can get with some of these theories which just make me laugh.
This isn't a theory for the most part, it's the most obnoxious and lazy justification nobody ever needed. And GameFreak themselves stirred this junk into a gross batch of idiocy.
They pretty much ruined any kind of limitation to the story with the Delta Episode, establishing that any stretch of in-universe logic can be conveniently bypassed by simply shoehorning another parallel dimension into it. At this point, Pokémon lore has lost all of its value, and I don't care what Nintendo or GameFreak says about it: Delta Episode is NOT CANON, simply for being the worst kind of deus ex machina in existence and effectively even contradicting the Pokémon logic at its core.
I feel like he's more focused on pandering to the masses instead with his theories.
His jokes aren't funny. They used to bring a smile to my face, but the intro part where he delivers a ton of pokepuns just hurt bad.
And then he ignores some obvious facts in his theories like when the majora's moon would destroy the world or not. Not really, their moons not massive enough.
Anyone else feel like his jokes are unoriginal?
And this whole multiple dimensions thing, the theory's been around for a while.
That was pretty interesting. At least this time he actually said "Or maybe the just added this in when fans started asking too many questions". Most people watching are too dumb to realise that he's not actually implying that the creators purposefully put in ALL these details. Most of it is just pure coincidence and inconsistent characters.
Even though ORAS was the first direct claim of multiple dimensions, it isn't the first time we see it in the X/Y universe. The X/Y anime had an episode where Ash and Pikachu get lost in a "mirror" dimension found in the Cave of Mirrors.
Also ... could this be the answer as to why Ash never ages? Maybe we're seeing multi-dimensional Ash Ketchums every few seasons ...
@locky-mavo It's his first true scientific theory.
The definition of a scientific theory is: Something proven time and time gain.
The proof of this existing is there, he's just getting the word out. I've came across A LOT of people in the Pokemon community who don't believe that any of this was in the game, or at least, are too stubborn to accept it.
@BlatantlyHeroic Smash's Secret lore video though.
@Doge They were pretty lazy and extremely easy remakes with removed features.
Yeah I'd say they were moneygrabbers.
@Doge They were pretty lazy and extremely easy remakes with removed features.
Yeah I'd say they were moneygrabbers.
The game made those points pretty obvious
Geez! Enough of this theory crap. It's just a game, not a comic book. it doesn't need that their multiverse, physics or anything is over-explained or "theorized" to make it a good game. Just look at the whole mess Marvel is now, I really doubt that Multiversity rip-off will actually help them amend the past 20 years of crap they've been putting out. The worst part about these theories is that they take things that are actually part of the "lore" but are not well known and show them as "theories" of their own with all kinds of clichéd crap.
These conspiracy "theories" are becoming just like those stupid creepypastas, the first 5 or so were funny, scary and even believable, now it's just a bunch of clichés derived from the early ones and these are the same now. Universes, multiverses, limbo/purgatory, long lost relatives, limbo/purgatory, autism, limbo/purgatory, the minds of the authors. Did I forget to mention limbo and purgatory?
I wish Nintendo Video would stop posting those moronic Cartoon Conspiracy videos, I hope they won't start posting these game theory videos too.
