If you've got a pulse then chances are you're totally pumped for the impending release of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D. Should you also be faced with that eternal struggle concerning available memory on your console's SD card, then we have some positive news for you. Majora's Mask 3D will only take up a smattering of space on your SD card or console, leaving you with piece of mind on its release date - 13th February, 2015.
Nintendo of America has announced on its The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D digital pre-order webpage that the download size is only 661 MB. In contrast, this is nothing compared to the likes of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, which weighs in at 17,300 Blocks - or 2.1 GB.
Hopefully this information has made the purchasing decision easy for you - if it wasn't easy already - and to those of you who have pre-ordered your copy, rest easy in the knowledge that your SD card won't need upgrading just yet.

The original Majora's Mask for N64 was a 26mb game. Let that sink in.
Smash wasn't actually that big. It was only around 9XXX in size, or about 1.3GB.
@RupeeClock - The textures for the original were about 4x4, 16 colours. Let that sink in!
But, yeah. 600MB seems pretty big compared to the original. Download of games like this is not for me. I have to give my shiny new New 3DS to my son so he can play? I don't think so. Takes ages to clean the screen after his grubby mitts have been near it.
Ocarina of Time 3D was 512MB.
As for the difference with the N64 Rom :
If I remember correctly Majora's Mask was a much smaller game than Ocarina of Time, file size wise.
Remember, it's not the size of the file, it's what you do with it.
That doesn't surprise me when you think of the n64 rom size and the size of wind waker HD on the wii u. Nintendo always manage to utilise space they are gods when it comes to good things in small packages lol
It's a slight upgrade of an N64 game. Who actually thought it was going to be a big title? Those cartridges maxed out at 64MB.
Isn't that larger than OoT3D? If so, then that is truly massive! I could care less since I still have 20GB still stored on my SD card and plan to buy the retail version, but that is quite big. That is merely a quarter of the size of SSB, and SSB had such a big release!
@Moon lol
@Obito_Sigma You mean you "couldn't care less"...?
@Moon No, you don't remember correctly. In truth Majora's Mask had a SLIGHTY larger file size than Ocarina of Time. But only around 2 or 3 MB. Both games were released on a 256 Mbit module and filled it almost entirely.
Concerning the actual news. Really not surprising. Even a game like SM3DW on the WiiU is not that much bigger, while it the same time it was to be expected that MM3D would be considerably larger than the original.
That's is 20x the size of the original, so no, not really.
Doesn't matter to me this time. I'm getting my first physical copy for 3DS since early 2013, all thanks to that epic special edition. But even without it my 64GB microSD would more than suffice.
The article is WAY off on Smash's file size. My digital version, fully patched and everything, weights in at 9105 blocks.
All I know is the original Majroa's Mask on N64 was bigger than OoT on N64. You needed the expansion pak to even play it.
@Quorthon It's actually a pretty huge upgrade with much higher resolution textures, advanced lighting and particle effects, etc. It looks like an entire console generation of difference, more on par with a Gamecube game than a N64 game.
Here's a side by side comparison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvV56AJS8dY
@bezerker99
The expansion pack added 4MB of RAM, the game was distributed on the same size of cartridge as Ocarina of Time (64MB). Which was still quite large for the time.
Shouldn't be a surprise. 3DS games are usually pretty small since they don't have very heavy assets.
Well Majora's Mask for the N64 was only 32MB. It wasn't going to increase THAT much.
@Ralizah, File sizes are different depending on the country, because North America only needs a few languages, while Europe needs many languages.
@nono6400
PS4, XBONE games and modern PC games sometimes reach those large sizes because they have uncompressed textures, which is more of an anti-piracy measure than anything else. HD textures are large, but should not take up as much space as people think.
lol Who gives a crap if game X is bigger than game Y, or if version A was smaller than version B? We now know how big this is going to be, which is the entire point of the article.
@Dipper723 There's no speech in the game, so I assume you're talking about text?
@ZenTurtle Good to know. Thanks
MOOOOOOON!
"If you've got a pulse then chances are you're totally pumped for the impending release of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D."
I guess that means i'm dead, huh?
@Dipper723
SSB is 17,000+ blocks in Europe, then? Ouch.
To be fair, though, the article was discussing a Nintendo of America announcement in the same paragraph. If the European version of Smash 3DS was being referenced, it wasn't clear at all.
@RupeeClock My thoughts exactly. The additional overhead on this version would be the higher resolution texture maps, and the remastered audio.
@Dipper723 The extra languages are a few voice files (announcer and Sonic) and some text and it isn't much larger than the US version.
The 2.1 GB SSB size comes from a Japanese pre-order download card slip of paper. In other words not a reliable source at all (and proven wrong on many an occasion).
Hopefully the NOA website doesn't prove to be as unreliable.
@KodyDawg
It weird that we've seen very little of that game and its a March release.
Awesome! But no matter...nothing can withstand my mighty 32GB SD card.
Just ordered a 32GB Micro today with an additional 3DS charger so I can be ready to get my N3DS XL on day one and perform a system transfer. It will be a beastly transfer as I have over 50 games on my system, 10 or so of which, are full retail games.

For those who are wondering, that is about 5288 blocks. I think I'll go for the physical, though. I am always too scared to loose my 3ds with all my download games tied to it.
It's not just the higher resolution textures, they probably added in higher bitrate voice and music, N64 uses MIDI music and sounds. The higher polygon count also increases the file size as well.
@argh4430 I'm with you there!
I don't understand why people download full 3ds cart games as if you eventually wanted to sell them you can't. It seems to add very little value if any if you sold your 3ds console with the games downloaded on there. I only ever download the download only games as that's the only way to get them and vc games if I don't own the console etc. The only advantage I can see in downloading a full 3ds game is because it's convenient.
I'm debating the download due to there being no chance of getting the special edition but... I'm still holding out hope there will be some in stores.
@wizzgamer That convenience is all I need, and I don't sell games anyway.
