Mega Man and Mighty No. 9 creator Keiji Inafune has posted a New Year's greeting in which he reveals that production on his latest epic is almost complete -- as well as showing off a hitherto unseen level.
He refers to the development of the game as a "pleasure" and states that he can't wait for players to experience "the frustration of defeat" when they play the final release. Coming from anyone else that comment might sound a little odd, but this is the guy who gave us Mega Man, a title which has the power to totally befuddle teenagers.

Finally. This game better be frickin OUT OF THIS WORLD with all the funding it soaked up and time it's had for development.
I look forward to seeing if it does well.
The running animation still looks like it's skipping frames. If the screen scrolling doesn't stop/hop/skip when Beck is "hopping while running" then it won't be noticeable. They need to smoothen the screen scrolling when Beck is moving.
The game is looking the solid from a technical perspective. I think it'll be a lot of fun to play.
The final visual side is kind of ho-hum, which I felt they could have worked on, given how strong their concept art is. I know in-game 3D can't look exactly like 2D art, but it can get a lot closer than what they seem to have been gunning for.
So what's this guy's story on his split with Capcom anyway? Because within the span of five months, he went from being promoted to Global Head of Production to "starting his life over" and it totally looks like he just ditched them, started his own company, and resumed making a game that is a straight up, unapologetic clone of his previous work.
Very sad to see the holidays come and go BUT very excited on the new games for the this year.
I'm not very impressed with the look of the game, I really think they should have gone for all 2D graphics instead of 2.5D.
I have no doubt the game will be fantastic, though, considering who is making it. I'm counting on perfect controls and playability and a really challenging but fair difficulty
@BLPs Sounds more like he was the Global Head of Things We Tell You To Produce.
If you seriously think this will be out in the spring I have a challenging, 2.5D bridge to sell you.
This game has been in development for so long I'm beginning to worry about how much he's going to charge. I've got a bad feeling this is going to come in at over 20$ and he'll justify it from name sake. Will it be worth that price, only time will tell but many won't pay it.
@teeJay
I don't understand what you are thinking, here. What makes this different from games that are funded by a publisher? Is it that you don't understand that creating video games take a large group of talented individuals that must be paid? Do you not understand that many games you are seeing advertised now have already been in hidden development for years so seeing it play it out makes it feel especially long to you? Is it that people willingly paid upfront for something that is being delivered as promised? Where does all this special responsibility for it to "be frickin OUT OF THIS WORLD" come from?
Crazy how much money this blandness kickstarted compared to awesome looking games such as Source and Hollow Knight.
Im still very much looking forward to this, i'm surprised to see other now aren't
Looking forward to playing it myself. I backed it at a level I was comfortable with and because the character concept and boss structure is similar to Mega Man I'm glad they went with a 2.5 design that seems a bit different from other games.
We've only seen some small sections of the game and those of you who think it's stuttering it's just the video transfer process as far as I can tell. I'd be shocked if it dropped frames like that in the final version. Especially on consoles where the performance of the machine is constant.
I can't tell if the game will be great or not. Not until I play it and/or see some reviews at least. Looks fine, though.
I really hope this turns out to be very good but... It looks like everytime he says it's nearing completion. The game itself looks very unfinished and lackluster.
@sketchturner
Doesn't seem crazy to me. I tried looking for Source, but if that is the title it's a tragic mistake as you can't search for it without finding open-source or source code. Even on kickstarter.com. I don't even know what it is.
Hollow Knight was 163% funded. Good on them because it's very hard to get noticed with an unknown character like that in a crowd of 2D platformers (many failed) on kickstarter.
Might No. 9 is Mega Man or at least vindication for one of the biggest champions for Mega Man to fans frustrated for Capcom. It was an emotionally charged Kickstarter from day one and drew immediate press on all the gaming news sites.
Plus, most people don't understand or even care about the difficult process of making games, what it means to support people without middle men, or help someone realize a dream... as demonstrated in this very thread, I'd say.
Doesn't seem crazy to me. Not even surprising. It's sad to me that those with a ton of passion are overlooked or misunderstood in the kickstarter universe and are often held to much higher standards than those with solid, publisher-backed employment. No reason to disparage a successful kickstarter project like Might No. 9, though.
Now, if it sucks, that will be unfortunate, but it's far too early to judge something like that for me anyway.
Now im really sad that he doesnt work for Capcom anymore, because "We're pretty much finished" would have been such an awesome and ironic tagline
Game looks amazing. I can't wait!
@aaronsullivan
Yeah, I agree that Source is an unfortunate name for SEO. Here's a link if you're interested: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/fenxifire/source/
Meh, I would have much preferred to hear news about his unfinished (now cancelled, probably) project, Kaio King of Pirates.
Glad I didn't back this on Kickstarter now. Would have been a waste of money.
I don't see what the big deal is. I want my megaman fix. Since I can't have it from capcom I'll give the Creator of megaman and his team a shot. I like the way it looks personally. Given the team's size, I'm cutting them some slack and will enjoy the game. If it sucks to me then I'll warn others but it's amazing i'll praise it and spread the word.
Was never terribly hyped for this, but it looks cute. What I'm REALLY waiting, for, though, is the HD Shantae. That game is going to be gorgeous looking.
Doesn't look terrible visually though I'll bet a lot of people backed it thinking it would be rendered in gorgeous 2D like in the concept art. I wasn't aware they intended to do it this way.
I'm still hoping for a game that sells so much it makes Capcom see how stupid they are.
Also, people complaining about how long it took to make, you literally just saw the thing built from the ground up. I've waited longer for already-revealed nearly-finished games to be released than we've waited for this one to be made in its entirety.
This game reminds me of the strider remake.
I bet the gameplay is solid as a rock but the stages i have seen didn't look bad just bland. I can imagine having too busy graphics would make it hard to see all the action but I hope we get to see some impressive set pieces or something rather then sleek corridors.
After a quick look on the website it seems that the video shows a simple stage, there seem to be a lot going on in this game
I will be looking out for this game because I enjoy platform gaming
@Pod
It's just that. Concept art. They are free to change it to look however they want. whether they were going for organic,cel shade, bright and colorful, whatever, it's there choice and unfortunately for us the gamers, we gotta accept it whether we like it or not.
Beck & Call?
or...
Rock 'n' Roll?
I've been defending the graphics but went Ianafune said they're pretty much finished. I was upset. The graphics look way to bland to be done. They seriously better be thinking of adding some last minute touch ups because for all the money they raised this is just....bland.
Happy new year uncle Keiji!!!
@aaronsullivan well said, and I completely agree. Keiji probably did the best he could to make all mega man fans satisfied without stealing HIS OWN ideas from his franchise hit game, being funded through his fans and creating something entirely new. It makes me sad to see people bashing a legendary game creator. Wait for the game to come out at least!
I believe in you Keiji Inafune!!! 💙
hey all you negative people writing this game looks bland! stop being selfish and enjoy a new mega man game (even so this isn't mega man)the gameplay is still as fun as it was back then! also id like to see you make a 2.5d game with HD graphics with shading with about 10 people.
I got caught up in all the hype and donated $60 dollars to this (this only Kickstarter I've ever contributed to even).
Wish I could get my money back...
Still hate his guts,
Well looking forward to this title once it hits the wii u.. Hoping as others have commented this isn't the last HD build...
Edit: I'm fine with the game I just want to play it already!!
@gammer Just because I can't make Pizza doesn't means I can't judge it. Just because I can't make a computer doesn't mean I can't judge it, also I think you need to look up "selfish".
I'd rather see a sequel to Azura Striker Gunvolt as I was surprised how much I enjoyed it.
Wow, the Youtube video...
All the whining...
Ungrateful people.
After all we went through trying to get Mega Man Legends 3 afloat and they whine about the graphics. THE GRAPHICS. Graphics shouldn't be a concern anymore, it should be about the damn gameplay. Graphic-centric people make me sick.
@sketchturner Source looks cool. Hopefully they try again from a different angle. From what I saw it also lacks an emotional hook.
@WaveyChristmas ''They would of been better off going 16-bit'' Pleas, not again... let the graphics evolve a bit...
Reading the comment section kinda makes me sad, so many close minded fans, people are complaining about a game having polygons... WTF...Megaman 9 and 10 were 8 bits, let us have a fully developed 3D game for once, damn...
Everyone in this comment section are whining about this since it isnt Mega Man. You guus need to lighten up, the beta was amazing
To many people getting hung up on the "almost done" statement. Dont forget its a relative term, they could be almost done in that the technical side is completed and there still needs to be touches required to everything else. Obviously there is more to be done but I wouldn't be concerned, Gunvolt looked fine.
Was so exited at first with the prospect of a "Modern" Mega Man, but really this doesn't look all that great.
The graphics are one thing, but the ART STYLE is throwing me off, as well as the animations and moves.
Will have to wait for reviews for this one.
Looks generic.
Looks boring as hell, what the hell man?... what happened to all that hand drawn design and.. why making the in a bland 3D, looks like a long time lost and found PS2 game.
@WaveyChristmas This game at least looks better than Megaman X8, so it's still an evolution.
