Hacking has always been a prominent feature in any Pokémon game, and even in this current age of instant video evidence on YouTube taking the place of playground rumours, determined individuals are uncovering secrets about the most recent generation of Pokémon games. It should be noted that this article contains potential spoilers concerning as yet unannounced aspects of Pokémon X & Y and Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, so you’ve been warned!
Our previous article looked at Hoopa and its Unbound form, but little has been discussed about Volcanion, the elusive Steam Pokémon. Boasting a unique Fire and Water typing, Volcanion uses superheated steam to tackle its opponents, and thanks to some clever data miners, that's not all we know about this legendary monster.
Volcanions' signature move is called Steam Eruption, which is a Water type Special move with a staggering 110 base attack and 95 accuracy. That's going to pack a serious wallop. The Pokémon also has access to Fire attacks as well, as you might expect, meaning that this critter's got excellent coverage, and its typing gives it some impressive resistances.
So how do you get your hands on one of these without getting on the wrong side of Nintendo? Given that Volcanion isn't currently available in either pair of games, we can assume that Nintendo is planning to release it in an upcoming event, much in the way it does for many of its more elusive legendary fighters.
Not content with uncovering the monster, its type and its moveset, hackers were also able to find some hidden monologue from the owner of the television studio in Mauville City. The speech refers to a mysterious character known as Brandon that many believe to be Pyramid King Brandon from Pokémon Emerald, who was intrinsically linked to the Battle Frontier in the same game. Naturally this text will only appear if you have Volcanion in your party, so you won't be able to see it in your game without resorting to nefarious means. See the transcript below:
Hot diggidy! That's a Volcanion you have there, isn't it?
As far as I know, the people in that group are the only ones in history to have seen this Pokémon. To think that I'd meet a Trainer who not only found Volcanion, but actually caught it!
What a day! I like you, kid! I'm the head of this TV studio. How about I show you some top-secret specials we made about Volcanion?
They're a little something I made for a TV show once back in the day, but... Well, things didn't work out, and they ended up getting shelved.
OK! Sit back and enjoy! My top-secret Volcanion specials!
All right! Which clip would you like to watch?
This is a special edition of MVTV: Explorations of the Ancient World! Join us deep in the swamplands of the Kalos region where we found a mythical Volcanion! ... Explorer: "B-boss! There it is! It's Volcanion!" Brandon: "Oh! Get back! If it blows, it could send even huge mountains flying! It can change moisture into super-heated steam in an instant with its internal organs causing a massive explosion!" Explorer: "That was a close one! Thanks for saving me, boss!" Brandon: "Stay alert at all times! Don't forget your courage sensor!"

It's Volcanion!" Brandon: "Oh! Get back! Look at those arm-like things growing out of its back! It uses those to suck in moisture to turn into a thick fog! If we stay here, we'll be trapped in the fog!" Explorer: "That was a close one! Thanks for saving me, boss!" Brandon: "Stay alert at all times! Don't forget your courage sensor!"
This is a special edition of MVTV: Explorations of the Ancient World! Join us on a desert island in the Johto region where we found a mythical Volcanion! ... Explorer: "B-boss! There it is! It's Volcanion!" Brandon: "Oh! Get back! An explosion from Volcanion can even change mountain ranges into plains! It's thought that ancient land masses were formed in that way." Explorer: "That was a close one! Thanks for saving me, boss!" Brandon: "Stay alert at all times! Don't forget your courage sensor!"
How about that?! Quite the spectacle, wasn't it? That's our fantastic TV series from the famous explorer Brandon!
All right, that was quite the spectacle! That's our fantastic TV series from the famous explorer Brandon!
It's not clear whether or not activating this will change anything in the game on a grander scale, as the efforts to discover these titbits can often mess up the game to the point that certain events don't trigger when they should, so we still can't be sure that we know everything.
Leave us a comment below telling us how you feel about this unique Pokémon, and you can check out this video below which takes you through the finer details of the hidden messages that you can discover.

Well, that's kinda disappointing. I was hoping Volcanion would have a special event or even location, but that's all? Looks like it's gonna be distribution-exclusive...
I wish Nintendo would distribute these pokemon already
So, this is the Gabe Newell Pokemon?
This is the VG equivalent of someone saying 'no need to watch the 6th sense, I'll show you what's up with Bruce Willis'.
You can sort of see why Miyamoto and Sakurai don't care much for storyline in videogames....
@Bulbousaur Nah, it's not morbidly obese.
Desert island in Johto? I don't think there's ever been such a place.
so there will never be one game that lets you have ALL pokemon and variants?
@MrGawain Yeah, this dialogue is like something out of a badly directed movie or TV show, but it was probably intended to show the inanity of most TV programming.
As for Miyamoto and Sakurai not focusing on storytelling... Let's be honest here, they're not writers, and they couldn't write a script to save their lives. Their games are about a world and it's inhabitants, not about moving prose. There are other games out there with competent scripts, including from Nintendo.
@GN004Nadleeh There is (sort of), it's called Pokemon Blaze Black 2 & Volt White 2.. It's a mod of B&W2. Until a mod of X&Y is created, that's the closest we'll get.
As for official versions... well... that would defeat the possibility of selling multiple versions of the same game to pad it's sales numbers!
That pokemon sure is ugly. Also, I don't recall a desert island in Johoto.
I wouldn't mess with this one yet
I have volcanion
You can get him via powersaves on x/y and just bank him over the ORAS. I don't see anything particularly new eventwise with him besides the forementioned.
@ZenTurtle Prison bottle is so far the only hacked key item known. It is used to change hoopa's forme. In X/Y we had all the unreleased items that aren't normally available due to no item bank.. (cusap berry for example) and we had access to latiosite and latiasite which were entirely new items never released until oras.
And no volcanion and hoopa cannot be used over wifi so do not ask.
I see these things running around on my Amie screen.
And 1/2 of the Secret Base teams I fight are all shiny teams.
So good job banning all non 6th Gen Pokemon from ladder Nintendo. You stopped the hacking for sure.
@DarkKirby It's quite easy to obtain shinys in 6th generation, more so than previous generations. Even ones with good ivs o. O
A little unrelated...but Ive always thought there is one game Nintendo could make that would shake the very foundations of the gaming world and win the console war in one fell swoop: Pokemon Online, a console pokemon MMO.
@invictus4000 It would probably be the only thing that could beat WoW right now, but Pokemon is probably going to remain a portable title with limited online features for now. Unless Game Freak's philosophy behind making Pokemon is changed, a Pokemon MMO probably won't happen until the cyborg revolution and subsequent AI Singularity. When that happens, we won't even need game consoles anymore. We would BE the console! ...Scary.
@MegaBeedrill: Excellent, I'd rather they not be used over wi-fi. While I'm not going to go into whether hacking pokémon is good or bad, I'd rather not lose a battle to one or have one infecting my game.
invictus4000: If they ever did create a pokémon MMO you'd have to start collecting your pokémon from scratch. Just imagine how powerful someone with hacked pokémon would be.
Pokemon Planet is an MMORPG in its alpha stage but can be downloaded by the public.
It's not amazing yet, but has potential.
Pokemon World Online is a 2D mmorpg that I'm much less familiarf with.
And I believe that talking to the TV station guy with volcanion will allow all of the mirage spots to be seen at once.
After I read this article I took a hacked volcanion to mauville.
After reading all the texts (no cinematics 😠) I went around and talked to everyone in mauville before soaring.
Once in the sky I noticed that there were at least 5 mirage spots open not including the pathless plain (which was also visible).
I had never seen this before and assumed it was a response to my "viewing" all the research "videos" that the guy in the TV station wanted to show me.
@DanteSolablood How would it infect your game? I don't understand the logic in that.
But yeah ever since the most recent update in pokemon x/y you cannot use any hackmons or unreleased pokemon online in trades or battles. Before you could use them against passerbys and friends atleast, and I can say during the time I had volcanion and hoopa in battle, they're not that good at all.. pretty lackluster as a matter of fact.
It appears this update carried over to oras as well.
@PlywoodStick
Lol. Yeah I completely agree. Pokemon will always be a portable experience just like you described. But can you imagine the possibilities?? Real time duels with real-world trainers.
@invictus4000 Basicly a pokepark where you can play as any pokemon and with online features?
Yes plz.
Even better, Steam Eruption also shares Scald's ability to burn the opponent 30% of the time!
I know that my m8s got volcanion, he was bragging about unlocking it the other day. I've always thought there should be a fire/water type, but yeah I'm just trying to get my head around its immunities/vulnerabilities, so obv Electric is gonna be super-effective against it but what else?
@Bolt_Strike Pretty sure you don't know as much as Brandon...
@Interneto I'm pretty sure Game Freak doesn't know as much as Brandon either.
@Bolt_Strike And it's you who knows more than them, right? LOL
