The excellent first piece of paid-for DLC was released for Mario Kart 8 on Thursday, and it truly is a wonderful download, worthy of your hard earned money.
We've waved lyrical about how great it is, but if for some reason you aren't yet convinced, allow us to push you off the fence with this video of Link, Tanooki Mario & Cat Peach racing around the eight new tracks in the four new vehicles - All in beautiful 1080p, 60fps footage. You'll need to be watching this video using the Chrome browser to get the full effect, and your eyes will love you for it. Click that "cog" icon in the bottom right of the screen, select 1080p60 and you'll be away.

Haha, like I'd use Chrome to watch this!
The new tracks are great, gj Nindo!
Forgot how fun playing this was grateful for the new tracks.
Oh my, Oh my oh my... Great composition guys, it really shows off the tracks well, and I've already bought them xD Also, that... Excitebike... music...fangasm
@PvtOttobot thanks! Very pleased with how this turned out, and all of my videos in future should be 60fps as well
I liked all the dlc courses,my favourite is ice ice because its so much crazy course lol.But why most people online suck so much?I just played yesterday with my worst kart combination and i was mostly 1st and 2nd because of blue shells or triple red shells.
Also i m not that good because i always lose against my friends lol,even i have the game and the system and i secretly train sometimes
isnt mario kart 8 just 59 fps?
This looks beautiful, I do like how I can watch this in IE11 with no modifications beyond changing the resolution.
@LeeGarbutt Nice!
For some reason, the video isn't playing properly in HD for me...
I haven't played all of the new courses yet but my opinion thusfar is mixed. The new tracks bring some much needed , um, "newness", to the game but the courses that I have played have too many turns. For that reason, the Excitebike stage is my favorite of the dlc. The Yoshi course however, invokes more rage then fun for me.
@6ch6ris6 It was 59 fps when driving online (60 fps offline), but that might be fixed since 1.0.0. But OTOH MK8 is only 720p as well, so the spec mentioned in this article is only related to the Youtube spec.
@jariw Since MK8 is a Wii U game and Wii U has a Youtube app would the Wii U run this at those specs? Would videos in the eShop? Did I spell everything correctly?
Is there an emoticon or code for sincerity? I know /s is sarcasm. /sin probably means something else. NBAJFO (not being a jerk for once)
Played thru all 8 on 50cc and won all 8 using Gamepad to steer but Iggy was a persistent little bugger. Together the tracks do a good job of showing how far the level design has come. Though I think Yoshi was my favorite, it felt like a grand prix on a tropical island w/ all the hairpin turns. Most of the tracks are pretty straight even when driving upside down. Think we'll have some family 4 player today.
Oh, and Link is a pretty cool addition, he seems really into it. And I like his bike, but after the first cup I unlocked the Yoshi cycle so I let my Mii take thay for a spin.
@VolcanoFlamesNL are you using the Chrome web browser?
@LeeGarbutt I am. It plays properly in 720p but the video lags a lot in 1080p, even if the song is playing perfectly.
@VolcanoFlamesNL it may be that your machine hasn't got quite enough power to play the video in 1080p? Still, it looks great in 720p as well
@LeeGarbutt Hmm... don't know about that... those Smash Bros. 1080p60 gameplay videos in October played perfectly in 1080p on my computer.
But MY OH MY the MK8 DLC looks fantastic!
@rjejr The Wii U YouTube app seems to have supported 1080p from the start:
http://www.polygon.com/2012/11/23/3682950/wii-u-youtube-app
However, the app doesn't support the 60fps format that Chrome (and apparently Safari) now supports. eShop is 1080p AFAIK.
I just finished downloading the DLC this morning and played the Egg Cup. I liked all 4 tracks but I loved Dragon Driftway, even if I seem to be the only one. Driving through a dragon, a Mario Galaxy dragon at that, the shaolin Lakitus, the music, I liked it all.
And Mute City made me realize how dumb Nintendo was for putting another Mario and another Peach instead of the obvious Captain Falcon and even Samus instead. But Link in his Eponator is awesome.
The question is will I get the DLC...
Its tempting.
@CyanSolution247 It's more Mario Kart - That's reason enough
Ice Ice Outpost was a letdown.
Most boring track. There's hardly any excitement. Other than that, cool DLC.
@sinalefa nah I love Dragon Driftway too, really cool, GobbleGut! My daughter loves it too so you're not alone! Made us think of Kung Fu Panda. My favourite is Mute City... too cool
Why watch the video to see it in 1080p 60fps when I can just play it on my Wii U?
Jokes aside, hopefully this can help people decide whether or not they want the DLC. I got 3 stars on both cups on 150cc (Still need to do them in mirror mode), and I love every track. I can't wait until the second pack is released!
I'll wait till they add the 60 fps option to FireFox. Chrome just doesn't have as many useful Extensions like FF has.
@jariw - Thanks.
Why is the video in 1080p when MK8 outputs at 720p?
@Scary_Old_Lady #1 My thoughts exactly.
@6ch6ris6 Mario Kart 8 is just 59fps? Like anyone would actually notice that one single frame out of sixty drops every second...
@Panamae Ever heard of upscaling?
@TheRealThanos Upscaling isn't a native image, though. Don't be pedantic.
I cannot stop laughing at "A Link to the Fast."
When is this game coming to Xbox One?
@Panamae I captured the video from a Wii U upscaling the game at 1080p. it's not native 1080p, but let's be honest, few console games actually are
PLEASE make f-zero soon!!!!!
So they managed to get in that one extra frame those guys were complaining about when the game apparently ran at 59FPS?
@BarryDunne I use an Elgato Game Capture 60 - Very easy to use, and plays well with my Mac
@BarryDunne Yeah, check the specs on Elgato's site - you'll need a bit of oomph to capture 1080p at that frame rate.
@Panamae I wasn't being pedantic, kid. I was being factual.
(and I was even being lighthearted about it, hence the smiley, which you apparently mistakenly took for sarcasm)
And comment #33 has your answer...
I just think Nintendo DLC Rules.....i mean this much new content for essentially $6.......i really hope more Nintendo titles support meaningful DLC
