It's now just a week before the first batch of DLC for Mario Kart 8 arrives; while it may seem slightly peculiar to be hyped for paid DLC, we suspect a good number of Nintendo fans are eagerly awaiting this pack's arrival. For a thoroughly reasonable price there'll be a decent amount of content, and the fact that iconic franchises such as The Legend of Zelda and F-Zero are featuring takes it — we hope — to another level.
This first pack will certainly bring a handsome expansion to MK8, and below are the details — if you missed them before — of what's coming.
- 3 Characters: Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach, Link
- 4 Vehicles: Blue Falcon, B Dasher, The Master Cycle, Tanooki Buggy
- 8 Courses as follows:
Triforce Cup: Wario's Gold Mine (Wii), Rainbow Road (SNES), Ice Ice Outpost, Hyrule Circuit
Egg Cup: Yoshi Circuit (GameCube), Excitebike Arena, Dragon Driftway, Mute City
Keen to build anticipation, Nintendo of America has released a new overview video for the first pack; even though we know what's included, it's another chance to see some additional footage of the new tracks, in particular.
Check it out below and let us know whether you'll be jumping into this DLC on 13th November.

Is the person who narrated this video the same person who narrated one of the NA trailers for Captain toad? They sound so similar.
Can't wait to get the DLC once I have enough money.
I kinda can't get over how awesome this is. More real tracks for the game without waiting multiple years for a sequel. My love of past Nintendo experiences just makes the whole thing feel so much more valuable than when DLC comes to other games.
Then I think about things like the Zelda Wii U game that is coming and how DLC and Amiibo ideas might apply there. Can you imagine downloading an extra temple or area for a Zelda proper game? One advantage to an addition happening after the game is released is that the new content has a chance to focus on aspects that fans enjoy that the developers didn't anticipate.
@Iggly Funny you mention the narrator because I think I like his voice and tone. It seemed just about right. The only thing that made my inner-pre-teen-self giggle was how much Cat Peach sounded like cat pee when he said it. Ahem.
Annoyed how the DLC won't show up until 12:00PM. I leave for class on Thursday at 12:00PM. Wish it was up one hour earlier.
I know Snes Rainbow Road has been back a lot but I love it so much I don't care.
In one week we will have a Mariokart game with three Rainbow Road tracks, not sure if that's too many or not.
Yeah its surprising how I avoided paid DLC for all these years on the PS3 and now back-to-back season passes w/ HW and MK8. My kids bought all the Pikmin3 DLC w/ their allowance, and my youngest bought a few texture packs for Minecraft, but these are my first forays.
My biggest complaint is the 3 new characters. Link rocks but costume skins on old characters are not new characters.
Its all worth it though just for the "its Mario Kart, not Nintendo Kart, now its ruined, waah" whining. I just find that so funny. I can understand the people getting annoyed at the MH4U skins, that vid yesterday was just ridiculous. Id still play it, but Im not a MH fan.
Three new characters should have been: Link, Zelda, Tingle. Am disappointed.
Meanwhile, Boo, Wiggler, Petey, and the rest of the gang commiserate in the corner.
Tingle and his balloon bike please!
@Jazzer94 I hope it is not watered down like it has been every time other than the first.
These tracks look awesome! I'm just so glad this is coming out on my birthday.
Cant wait to play again on SNES RR. Its one of my fave tracks.
I still want a F-Zero please.
Ugh so much is coming out this month. MK8 DLC on the Wii U, GTA V and WWE 2K15 on the PS4 World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor for the PC this is going to be an expensive month.
Who cares about the new characters. It's all about the new courses and is well worth the money just for them! I'm looking forward to racing in the B Dasher as well.
I would have liked to see a different track than SNES Rainbow Road again.
Besides that, this looks like solid DLC. AND THAT F-ZERO TRACK LOOKS SO GOOD
Pack 1 is amazing. All the tracks look great; my favorites being Ice Ice Outpost, Hyrule Circuit and Mute City.
I love how this is the exact same trailer NoE uploaded a day earlier. They did that with the Smash 3DS launch trailer too, except then it was a month later, for some reason.

You love it a lot dont you
Anyway, this fir me is how DLC should be done. We had what most people would have accepted was a complete game, and now we are going to get 16 extra courses on top of it, thats worth the money alone for me. The characters and cars/bikes are secondary but I will definitely having a go as link
While initially a bit put off by the UK price, I'm now really looking forward to this DLC. Ever since the Cube era I've hoped Mario Kart would become Nintendo Kart. This feeling has grown stronger with the last few iterations feeling quite samey to me, but now we finally get a taste of it. I hope its a success and they lean even further towards characters and tracks from other Nintendo games. Fox McLoud in a mini-arwing would be awesome
I was initially expecting it to be in the same style as how Mario Kart cups are normally done - 4 new and 4 remakes. However, I am really pleased they chose to do more new than remakes as they look absolutely awesome.
I hope there won't be just 2 sets of DLC and that they continue making new tracks etc throughout the life of the Wii U.
@Jazzer94 If it returned after appearing a few games prior as a retro track(2 games minimum,) I wouldn't be just slightly excited, I mean, I'm super excited for GCN Yoshi Circuit and that returned in DS intitally, but returning after returning in the previous entry, kind of makes me less excited about the track returning. I mean, I'm excited for the DLC and I'm a little excited that SNES Rainbow Road is returning, if that made any sense at all...
@FragRed I don't see why not, I mean, it is the second best selling Wii U game and is most likely going to be the best selling by the end of the system lifecycle...
does anyone know how this will effect online racing? if someone doesn't buy the DLC - are they excluded from a DLC course race? Are the people that buy the DLC gonna be in their own "community"?
I'm going to assume that Nintendo won't block off racers from each other - but why should anyone buy the DLC if you can race online and use the courses? I already bought both packs - but I hope the online grouping doesn't change. I'm just looking for some info on the subject.
@Peach64 I agree, I would definitely want to see that. Maybe DLC pack nr. 3?
I say, let them go all out in terms of characters and courses with the next iteration.
@SMEXIZELDAMAN I think you mean: Tingle, Tingle, Tingle.
@FragRed
It is weird isn't it! I was expecting a retro course cup and a course made of new tracks from their other IP. Instead we have three of the former and two new Mario Cups all randomly put together.
@vitalemrecords I hope you are not expecting the Wii U to stream courses it hasn't downloaded! : O
I imagine people with the DLC will have an option of whether they want to enter matches with other DLC owners and have access to those courses or play with everyone and not have those show up.
@Blue-Thunder It's a good value for the money even if you buy them separately. Nintendo must be insane to be selling this much content for so little. If this is how they're going to keep doing DLC, then I say bring it on!
Well, even if they add other IP characters, it will always be Mario Kart.
I mean, how many Marios are in here?
It just needs one more DLC "battle pack" to overhaul battle-mode and introduce dedicated battle arenas and this game is perfect.
@Morph
LMAO. I guess we can measure how he loves it so much. Five times!
Anyway, it's still Mario Kart even if they add characters outside the Mushroom Kingdom. The gameplay that makes the game "Mario Kart" is still there and as long as Mario is present.
Haha, nice to see some mk8 DLC love, I've never been so excited for DLC before.
It seems so far away even though it's only one more week of waiting time!
Once again Nintendo shows the gaming world the "right way" to do something. They may've been late to the DLC party but they've turned up in style.
Fantastic new content for a fantastically polished game with a great price, with more content to come in the future. I can see DLC packs right through the whole Wii U life cycle.
I never pick Mario as a driver, and I agree about the amount of reskins, but Mario in a Tanooki suit in a Tanooki buggy just looks the nuts.
@vitalemrecords - This is how I understand it will work. Everyone will race together regardless of purchasing the dlc. The people with the dlc will have an option to choose from two sets of races (one set being a random choice of four dlc tracks). Sounds fair to me, I'm sure 90% of people will get the dlc anyway.
@rjejr My thoughts exactly about Mario and Peach. I think the next iteration of Kart will be Nintendo Kart. It might be called something else, but it will no longer be Mario's game. I'm not sure how I would feel about the series if it went this way but I think it's going to happen.
@WYLD-WOO My bet is that it will work like it has in other online games with DLC. For instance, in COD, you only play on the maps you purchase but there's an option to play on the DLC only maps for those who own them.
I bought the two pack as soon as they were available! Super excited!
@dkxcalibur - That's pretty much it. My info is from reliable press sources and direct answers on this subject from Nintendo.
@dkxcalibur @sinalefa - The next kart game will be called "amiibo Kart" and only amiibo will be able to race in it.
That's a joke BTW, but I honestly really thought that's how amiibo would work in MK8, as new racers w/ new karts, the Link amiibo would unlock Link and his Eponacycle. I want to see the Wii Fit trainer use the balance board as a hoverboard
I can't wait to play the new courses!
Just awesome, as some others have said, I wonder how they will deal with online? whether they will have seperate rooms for DLC owners (that would make the most sense). I wonder if nintendo will release numbers (i know they hate doing that) of how many ppl bought the DLC, to see the % of games that bought in.
@RoomB31
Check out this article:
http://venturebeat.com/2014/11/06/heres-how-mario-kart-8s-downloadable-content-works-online/
GLORIOUS!
(Also, I want a new Excitebike game that looks just like the DLC's design)
Course I'm mostly expecting them to just split up the rooms so you only have people with the dlc racing.
Four courses are decided at random. Only players who have downloaded the DLC are allowed in the DLC course room. Thats how I expect it to be.
That is a bit annoying I am bored to death of all the normal ones other than Mount Wario (That never seems to come up).
A 8/40 probability of a new track will be annoying.
@rjejr I doubt they will ever change the name from Mario Kart even if it turns into Nintendo Kart from the start (See the addition of Xenoblade Chronicles to X when the original name was much better).
I was thinking about how they would deal with the dlc tracks, atleast we now know.
The thing is, it'll split the community up quite a bit, especially when pack 2 arrives. They'll have to split it into those with no DLC, those who only own pack 1, those who only pack 2, and those who own both packs.
Also, isn't it frustrating to know the DLC is ready, yet we can't play it.
Shouldn't have watched that... I was already excited... is it the 13th yet?
I hope pack 3 is released next November.
Instead of introducing them as new characters, I'd rather have Mario and Peach sorted similar to how Yoshi and Shy guys are where they're different colors are in a submenu. I dunno, just nitpicking.
@unrandomsam
Really? You must not play for very long sessions. I've played Mount Wario online countless times..
Also, read that article I posted. It's not going to be an 8/40 probability of DLC tracks coming up. That info was inaccurate. You're actually gonna be able to join rooms with only other DLC owners.
@dizzy_boy
I was thinking about that as well. Obviously it's not going to be an issue for a long time(sad face frickin' may release date...), but still, I don't understand how Nintendo is going to deal with that. Are they really going to split the community up that many ways?
Honestly, they should have just sold both packs together instead of giving the option to buy only 1 of them. Hopefully most everyone bought both packs. I don't understand why anyone would just want 1.. You just save 4 measily bucks and lose out on a whole bunch of content in the process... Such a better way to go paying 12 bucks for both packs.
Already pre ordered all DLC. Looks awesome! I'm especially excited for the Hyrule and Dragon tracks.
Can't wait!
