It's been a big year for Mario Kart 8, with the racer boosting Wii U sales and delivering a franchise first with the recently released DLC. It's been given plenty of praise, and now has a relatively lucrative award to celebrate.
Every year the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) hosts its Children's Awards, to celebrate the best entertainment of the past year. Nintendo's racer grabbed the Game award, seeing off three other games to nab the prize; the full list is below.
Mario Kart 8
Pokémon X & Y
Rayman Legends
Tearaway
A welcome victory for Mario Kart 8, which will still be an important selling point for the Wii U this Holiday season; it wouldn't surprise us if more awards follow before the end of 2014.

Cool, MK8 is a fantastic game! I love the glorious DLC!
Sorry but I don't get it. It says games from last year but MK8 is from 2014?
My GOTY.
@sinalefa The BAFTA web site says the category is called "Game in 2014". 2 of the other titles were released late 2013. Rayman Legends seem to live by its own time rules, in a number of ways.
@sinalefa The awards are held before the year ends, so games that came out late in the year don't get nominated.

Thanks. So it is not the calendar year that they take into account. Interesting.
Four great nominees, and an obvious winner. MK8 screams fun and pure social gaming if played with friends.
Rayman Legends is ONE OF my favourite platformers in many many years, especially on Wii U, but as a children's game of these times, it may be a bit too 'hardcore', actually... But as I said, I really love it.
Tearaway is beautiful, charming, and colourful, but very short and felt a bit... empty at times.
Pokémon is an obviously popular franchise, but I like the old ones better, because the latest ones are actually way too easy to beat... I know there's more to these games for die-hard fans, but I'm not one of them anymore (heartgold/soulsilver were the last ones I played a lot, after playing pearl only a little)
Congratulations! This game desserves all the awards on wich is nominated. It's such an amazing, beautiful and fun game.
Children's award?
So that's the audience Nintendo is attracting. And I thought it was an adult game that children could play as well.
Nintendo should hand the award back.
It certainly deserves it. Mario Kart 8 is easily the most polished and fun Mario Kart game I've ever played. The DLC is fantastic too.
