Today's Nintendo Download Update news for Europe brought a few welcome surprises for Virtual Console fans, including confirmation that this week will bring us the Super NES classic Donkey Kong Country and the VC début of Donkey Kong Land. The good news didn't stop there for DK fans, however.
As the detail was buried within promotion prices for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, some may have missed the fact that the next two updates will bring more retro DK platforming, in what's certainly a Rare treat. The following titles are on the way to the Wii U and 3DS.
Wii U
- Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest — 23rd October
- Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble — 30th October
3DS
- Donkey Kong Land 2 — 23rd October
- Donkey Kong Land III — 30th October
The arrival of the Game Boy series of games on the 3DS is particularly welcome for those that missed out on them in the '90s — or weren't even born yet; they were Rare's portable entries that accompanied the better-known SNES titles.
Are you looking forward to these arrivals in the coming weeks? Let us know.

I wonder if these will be taken down like they were on Wii?
@HyliasHero true and if not hope it comes to the NA Region soon i love those games so much at the time i had the SNES. I HOPE!!!
Surely I didn't expect this, since they were removed from the Wii Shop.
Well, time to pay this 1,50 € and play DKC on the Gamepad.
Why were these removed from the Wii Shop, anyways? Anyways, it's nice to see them come back.
Because they were removied from the Wii Shop, I hope the cheap Wii U upgrade option is available for this.
There goes my wallet.
I thought I had blown my chance to own all 3 of these! Hope they're all available for at least a couple of months
Does this give us a glimmer of hope for DK64!?!?
I may pick up 2 & 3 this time since they got removed and this will be my chance to play them as I only had the first game when I was younger on my snes.
What a great surprise. I'll be downloading all 6 as they come out.
I'll be getting the snes trilogy on wii u. Love these games!
Hopefully they come to the NA soon. If so, I'll be buying the entire DK Land trilogy and Country 2 & 3.
DKC trilogy for me! RARE!!!
NO! NO! NO! I have been waiting for this since three years now! I will NOT give anyone at Nintendo NA a pony if they do not put this is on the NA Eshop with a banana!! D:<
Let's tone it back a bit please — TBD
Let's not ruin the point of my comment; do you even WANT DKC on the Eshop? — Obito Sigma <3
Finally woke up abit and committed to some classic games on VC.
Still wish it was like this EVERY week, instead of nothing/waiting on good games.
Hurry with the N64 games!!!! I want to upgrade my Mario 64, Wave Race, 1080, and Majoras mask,
Having only played Kong Land III way back when, this is a great opportunity for me.
Excellent news. Have been wanting to play DKC for ages but all that was available was the apparently poor GBA port (besides buying an actual SNES) . I'll certainly be getting this now. Original SNES version on the Gamepad? Yes please! I do wish they had SNES VC games like Earthbound and this on the 3DS though but that's just me being picky.
Good news, my guess is these games are a timeed deal sort of thing, in 3/4/5 years time they will probably dissapear again
DKL can't really hold a candle to DKC, but it's still a good game.
Now, all we need is the collectathon that is Donkey Kong 64. Please Nintendo, give us N64 VC already!
Sweet! And that DKC:TF discount makes it cheaper than a boxed copy, too - Nintendo needs to do more of this!
I wonder how Nintendo got around that
Hell yeah!
Never played classic DKC before so I will buy eventually.
Donkey Kong!!
Let me know when Banjo and Kazooie makes an appearance. Otherwise don't care. Oh and Perfect Dark and Conker's and Diddy Kong Racing and you get the idea!
Oh man!!!! Finally! I have the trilogy on GBA, but all three on the Gamepad, in their original quality, and Donkey Kong Land too!? Sign me up! These games better come to the U.S., and hopefully this is a sign that DK64 should come once N64 VC begins! (I still need to play it!)
Donkey kong land on the VC is just one more reason we need the GBC color options added for GB games. That game is very difficult to see without having colored sprites
@Nintenjoe64 I would totally jump back on Donkey Kong 64 if it arrived on the VC as well =D
But... we kinda need to have N64 VC support on the Wii U to begin with. And to be honest, I've kinda given up on that ever arriving on Wii U. I mean, we've had GBA and DS games support announced ever since, and they have arrived before the N64 games which were announced waaaay back!
@Spoony_Tech I want this so bad... There are various remakes on Xbox but I want the Nintendo originals!
I really hope these come to NA too!! I already own DKC 1 and 2 on SNES, but I would LOVE to have them on the Wii U...and I've never played DKC 3 or any of the DKL games and would absolutely buy them as well!!!
Are they headed to Australia?
Man... Great news.
Awesome!!! Can't wait to download them Just recently watched the Kacho play DKC 2 on GCCX so this couldn't have been more perfectly timed since I really wanted to play the DKC games & wished they were on Wii U. & I can download DKL & play that again too! Played that sooooo much as a kid! Awesome!!!
@whodatninja @Spoony_Tech Doesn't Microsoft own those IPs now though? The likes of that happening is the same as Halo on WiiU. I.e Never.
Also, wasn't the Donkey Kong Country trilogy taken off the Virtual Console because they contain references to other Rare games? The same goes for Donkey Kong 64, that game had a remake of Jetpack in it.
@Spoony_Tech Long as we're wishing I want the GBA Banjo&Kazooie games.
Oh man... I'm buying four $10.00 eShop cards today or tomorrow in preparation of this coming over to the US, hopefully. If they do, I'm buying ALL six games! Definitely not going to miss out like I did the first time! Better safe than sorry!
After that Trilogy deletion thingy, I thought they'd never come back. They probably worked something out finally. Now the country trilogy is coming along with the land, Sweetness.
Looking for forward to these.
Edit: we need DK64
@ZeroZX_Dev The difference is at least the game I mentioned were at one time on a Nintendo system. Halo never was and most likely never will be. You would be better to reference another Rare title exclusive then Halo.
WOW What just happened? Did Nintendo and Rare come to an agreement? Does this mean we could see Goldeneye come to N64 VC? I am definitely gonna have to buy me these games
Hooray! Hooray! Hooray!
I don't have the first one in the trilogy. Glad they are coming back to the eshop. Maybe after I start making money again I'll pick the first game up.
This is fantastic news! I've been hoping that the DKC trilogy would grace the Wii U's ever-improving VC service sooner rather than later
Yes great news the return of K.Rool! Finally be able to have the majority of DK games on one system... I just hope they can bring DK64 out if/when N64 games start getting supported!
Can I cry? Because I think I'm gonna.
EDIT: Oh boy, Europe only? Come on, Nintendo of America!
I'm sure that it's coming to America. They're probably going to wait until the week after the other two Castlevania games release in the US. I for one think it's very sad that the new generation of Virtual Console is just now getting good. We still need to add a lot more systems to at least the Wii U. Virtual Console has the potential to give Nintendo lots of money, but for that to happen they need to frequently put out new stuff that people want.
@ryanator008 Yeah, it seemed weird to me that they announced two of the Castlevania games in separate weeks but they are being released on the same day...I kinda got the feeling that Nintendo told them "no...that week is for us". At least, I hope that's what's going on here.
Great! Europe is getting this in October That means North America will get this in February.
Will be buying all 6. I would love if this is followed up by all Rare's nintendo licenced games being released and we saw Killer Instinct, Conkers Bad Fur Day and the Banjo games eventually being release. And SUPER BATTLETOADS IN BATTLEMANIACS!!!! Not licences I know but a SNES game all the same AND one of my all time favourite from Rareware.
This would be a smart move from Microsoft. Better to take a cut of profit from game that would sell millions worldwide wide rather than a cut from games developed by the now Rare that sell nothing.
Hopefully these games don't disappear again, Nintendo tend to have a history of taking games down due to fear of licensing. It's still boggles my mind how Donkey Kong 64 was never release for VC.
This just made my day. I LOVE the original DKC trilogy and can't wait to buy these in the NA e-shop if/when they make their way to it. Good news like this should be mandatory for journalists worldwide to be posted on Monday mornings...
Awesome! I'll be picking up all of them at some point in the future
@Spoony_Tech If I had used another Rare IP, the analogy would of been lost. >_> Besides can anyone name a IP Rare made after their acquisition, besides Grabbed by the Ghoulies?
Whatever IPs Rare had is now Microsoft's, and the likelihood any of their original N64 games being released on VC is super low.
Great, now we just need this and SNES VC on WiiU will be perfect:
Aero fighters
Blackthorne
Captain Commando
Earthworm Jim 2
Flashback
International super star soccer deluxe
King Arthur and the Knights of the Round
Marvel War of the Gens
Rock n' Roll Racing
Sonic Blast Man
Star Fox
Stunt Race FX
Sunset Riders
Super Mario RPG
Super Star Wars
Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedy
TMNT IV: Turtles in Time
Top Gear
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FINALLY SOMETHING GREAT FOR US EUROPEANS!!!
@CaptMcCloudAran If these DKC games do, in fact, come to NA, the only SNES game missing that I really care about is Star Fox. Though, I'd like it if the Super Star Wars games and Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures could come to the Wii U's VC so I wouldn't have to go into Wii mode for 'em (not a huge deal if they don't, though).
@KoopaStarRoad You ALWAYS get stuff
I owned Donkey Kong Land as a kid (along with the Super Game Boy). I may pick these up for nostalgia reasons, but not until the new year.
SAY WHAT
well is still have the carts but this is great news
I was hoping for a 20th anniversary DK collection to be released before Christmas. Looks like that is unlikely now. But in any case I will be happy to pay $1.50 to upgrade the trilogy from my Wii.
North America please! It's crazy my gaming back log is huge now! I can't wait for B2, been addicted to MK8, SM3DW and HW! Still have lots of VC to play that I missed as a kid.
Finally! Finally finally finally!!!
Now we just need NA confirmation. Man, I've been asking for these games in Club Nintendo surveys for eons...
I hope they make it to North America. I still think it's so weird that they took those games off the Wii VC.
I want DK64 as well. Where's the N64 VC?
@Dipper723 But Smash Wii U comes 2 weeks earlier in NA so that makes it fair right?
This is for GBA VC?
@WiiULoveSquid No, SNES VC!
Great!
Finally.
I've been aching to play some DKC2 for ages now.
Gives me a chance to finally play the third entry as well.
@Captain_Gonru
The European eShop is always updated on Thursday, too. They only announce the Monday before what's coming. I really hope for you, you'll get those games soon, too, but their releases dates are no sign for an US release unfortunately.
This is great news!
NA announcement, please. So I can stop kicking myself for not getting DKC2 when I had the chance.
Oh, and I never tried the DKL games, so I would like to get at least one of those.
NEED A NORTH AMERICAN RELEASE!
@AG_Awesome: Nintendo really does need to add options such as color can be added to GB titles, multi-mode titles being playable in whatever mode we want, all SGB enhancements available for titles that supported it.
@Everyone_Else: Another couple titles on the back burner. I'll be getting these eventually.
For everyone wondering about the games' removal from the Wii shop, I saw a Twitter post from someone at Rare saying they had nothing to do with it and that it was all Nintendo's decision. The only reason I could think of for them to do this is to create demand for the trilogy before they put them on the Wii U eShop.
I'm crazy excited for these to return, even if they don't make it to NA immediately; I don't have the cash right now, and even so, I have plenty else to play.
@robohobo93 That or they thought that Microsoft would give them the contract hammer outta fear since Microsoft still owns Rare.
Nice to see this clarified tho.
Come on NOA! If they don't release it here it'd seriously mean they don't like money
I missed out on getting them on the Wii and by then they took them off and ever since then i was kicking myself for not getting them…now i wake up to find out that they're coming to the WiiU and i almost lost it! Im getting all 3!!!! The first nintendo console I bought with my own money was the DKC SNES bundle…i had a Genesis as well…wow so many good games and good times.
@sinalefa i know how u feel
They could also port Donkey Kong 64 if they just remove all the references to Rare's involvement, it is Nintendo's property. Rare did remake both Banjo games for Xbox 360 replacing all Nintendo references to Microsoft
I doubt we'll ever see Goldeneye on the VC. Rare finished up a Wii VC release of it and a HD port for XBLA, and all it needed was Nintendo's blessing to be released on both, but Nintendo said no.
@Mega719 Removing an entire minigame and the accompanying in-game reward is different from changing some graphics.
Nintendo, it really is time to bring SNES games to the 3DS.
gasp Gimme! Come to NA! I will buy the entire SNES trilogy!
P-Please! Just hearing this news is pretty exciting!
@robohobo93 ok you got me there i never actually played this game . Still they can remake it in HD like Rare did with the Banjo games. People wanted this on VC for years
OMG I never thought this day would come! Looks like I will be completeing my DKC collection by picking up DKC 3!
@JaxonH You and me both bud! I already had the first two through the Wii Shop and will instantly upgrade these to a Wii U version as soon as I can! Now, and I know it is stretching it but I am hoping for a release of DK 64 on the Wii U e-shop whenever they do start releasing N64 games, and then I will be one happy man!
I just can't believe it. I had lost any hope, I thought I was condamned to play those DK game on a freakin' emulator. Now I can play them on my TV, just like old times. Nintendo, I never understood WHY you took those games off the VC in thz first place, but believe me, I understood my lesson. Instan buy, all three of them. Donkey Kong FOR THE WIN !!
Awesome. Hopefully the GBA versions will be put up eventually. I do like the GBA version of DKC3 quite a bit.
Had no one else heard..?
The titles were taken down prior to the Wii U's release for a reason.
Nintendo has ONE console license with Rare's first party VC titles (DK is a Nintendo property after all) and it's a license that must be renewed and contracted much more often because of Microsoft's involvement.
If the game were available for the Wii AND the Wii U, Nintendo would have to sign a new contract.
Obviously, Nintendo has gotten desperate enough to sign that new deal.
Now if only Square Enix would consider a similar deal (remember though, many of the SNES games have already been licensed for PSN by Sony, so Nintendo may only have access to the Enix games. Then again, amalgamated companies always have weird little rules about how their content is licensed and distributed..)
@SahashraLA
Square-Enix released the original Dragon Quest games on ios (not sure about android), and many Final Fantasy games are also on PC, so I don't think theres any issue there. A few older FF games are on the VC already too.
I think its just that they don't see a point in re-releasing them on the VC. They probably don't think theres enough demand, not enough to bother hashing out a deal with Nintendo or anything. Same for Microsoft and RareWare's games, since nothing is stopping them from having them on both VC and XBL.
Darnnn you, Europe!
Reggie, step up your game
Still have all three DKC games on my Wii. Not in the habit of buying things multiple times just because Nintendo thinks I should. Why, that'd be like buying 3 different remodels of the 3DS... not like anybody would be eager to throw their money away for something like that, now would they..?
@SahashraLA That's all speculation. Just like the "Rare owns the IP" arguments and it's just flat out wrong.
Rare made a statement clarifying they hold no rights whatsoever, that MS holds no rights whatsoever, that neither of them ever held any rights nor will they ever hold any rights. They said you need to ask Nintendo why the games aren't for sale anymore, because they have nothing to do with it.
That theory was just guesswork by some fan and it spread like wildfire because it seemed plausible at the time. The truth is we don't know why the games were taken down, but we do know that Rare and Microsoft had nothing to do with it. Nintendo owns the rights to DKC, as they always have, which is why we've seen two new entries. It would be like saying Nintendo can't re-release Metroid Prime without licensing the game from Retro Studios, or Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon from Next Level Games.
It's annoying this one for me, I remember when it was announced that Nintendo were taking these titles off Wii VC. I was going to download them before they were taken off, I have all three on other Wii's but I am pretty sure that I lost a couple when I transfered my Wii VC titles to Wii-U. I hoping that they all 3 would make it onto a rom disc, it is 20 years that they appeared on cartridge form on a Super Nintendo. I also remember when the game was first released, you could send away for the soundtrack on a music CD and I remember the V.T that came free with a magazine! I'm pleased that these games are coming to Wii-U.
@BlackSpy Thank you we want these games on the 3ds vc in US/NA region Please
game and watch gallery 3
Pokemon trading card game gbc
super Mario bros deluxe
donkey kong land 1-3
Fire emblem ( nes )
The four turbo grafx 16 games that japan has
Outrun 3d classics version
after burner 2 3d classics version
More game boy color, and game gear games
Master system games
and any other games I forgot about
I doubt we'll get the promotion here in NA because of the Smash sale last month which was simmilar. I hope that we get the DKC and DKL games soon.
@SahashraLA quoted"Had no one else heard..?

It's interesting that the DKC trilogy is going onto the Wii U despite Rare worked on these games and they are owned by Microsoft now unless.....
NINTENDO BOUGHT OUT RARE CONFIRMED!
lol jk but i hope this is pointing somewhere around that idea?
Good news, seeing as it was a crime that they removed those great games (the DKC trilogy) from the Wii vc! Especially the second and third ones are great. Download them if you have never played them before!
If they come to the states, I'll definitely have to get them. :3
I would probably buy all three SNES games if they came to NA. Don't care about the GB ones, though.
This is stupid, having a huge powerful machine as demonstrated by the Nintendo 3DS to move 3D arcade and Megadrive Classics (After Burner, Outrun, Galaxy Force II, etc) they not take advantage to launch games Donkey Kong Country Snes with 3D layers . Nintendo really does not really care the fans...
This is weird. I just bought a copy of DK64 a few days ago and when I got it in the mail today, I saw this article. Excellent!
This is great!
I have DKC on GBA and I have DKL II and III, but now I'll finally be able to play the other entries!
@GameInfinite Nintendo don't have to sign contracts with anyone regarding the DKC trilogy. They own these games. When Microsoft bought Rare, Nintendo sold only the rights for certain franchises and of course none of those have been games that used their own IPs.
I already beat all Donkey Kong Lands back in the day but never got to play Country 2&3, it might be a good time to rectify that.
Freakin sweet!!! I was hoping this would happen someday. Though I live in NA, it's bound to be released here as well.
@Spoony_Tech Then I guess you're never gonna care because they're owned by Microsoft.
@NaughtyOttsel22 My hope is that one day Microsoft will be out of the video game market and that would hopefully free up Rare to do what they want again. Stranger things have happened and Rare has also been allowed to release a game or 2 on Nintendo handheld systems so there is a glimmer if hope.
Great news! I only have DKC 1 in Wii. I don´t think they back to Wii but I will glad to download all 3 in Wii U (before they got deleted in 4 years).
"Games from Rare, not rare games"
For cryin out loud, what is taking Nintendo so long to implement "rare downloads", @ogo79?
@Squid
thats why im taking over nintendo little by little. im suprised no one else thought about rare downloads before me, this is the easiest career ever.
@NintyMan i still have my gba sp
i hope we get GBA on the 3ds vc
donkey kong country was also released on the game boy color so the 3ds may get that one
