In a recent interview about Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, director of the Pokémon games Junichi Masuda talked about the fans' desire to see a new Pokémon Snap game.
Masuda-san was clear to point out that the N64 cult classic "wasn't originally developed by Game Freak", although it does seem that he has a certain fondness for the series as a gamer.
As a player I definitely want to play a cool new version of Pokemon Snap but at the same time I also think if it was just a remake with better graphics I don't think it would be as interesting as a lot of people are imagining.
It's no secret that many fans have been clamouring for a new entry to compliment the spin-off title, but like the remakes of Ruby and Sapphire, Masuda-san was adamant that it would have to evolve upon the game rather than just updating the graphics.
If someone was to end up developing it they'd have to come up with some cool ideas to really make it a good game for the current generation. It's sort of like what I was saying about Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. If it was just a direct port that would be kind of neat as well, but having new elements is definitely important.
It seems whilst there are no plans we know of for a successor to Pokémon Snap it's something that director has clearly thought about, so who knows?
How would you feel about a new Pokémon Snap game? Let us know in the comments!

I'd definitely be interested in another Snap game. It seems like something that would definitely be a fit for the Wii U.
As far as spin offs that I'm really waiting to hear about though, have been waiting a bazillion years for a new Colosseum/XD entry... :-l
A new entry in the Colosseum/XD series would be nice too...
Snap was more of an anime game than part of the game series. I guess the way you tell is whether or not it uses the game cries or if they say their own name like in the anime.
Spinoffs like Ranger or Pinball use the game cries, while spinoffs like Snap and Channel (and Smash Bros) use their anime cries. ...it's an interesting distinction, huh.
I would like to see a Gamepad-centric Snap game with controls like Pikmin 3's camera. ...and Miiverse sharing of course. If there was also a non-rails mode as well, that would be great too!
The first person radish shooting game in Captain Toad's game is just ACHING to be implementing into a Pokemon snap remake or squeal. We got so many more pokemon and regions for Mr, Snapit to capture.
I'd love a new Pokémon Snap. It's one of my most fondly remembered Pokémon spinoffs.
The Wii U (or even the 3DS) would be a perfect fit for the game.
Personally I'd love an open world free roaming Pokemon Snap rather than an on rails one. (or at least various maps you can roam freely around)
I really liked the game when I played it on wii. It really should be a new snap game, not just an improved version. There is so much that they could do with the game, but a lot of work too though.
It's simple: Include snap features in the next coliseum game. Make it a side thing to do like they have in every new pokemon iteration... Like beauty contests and the movie editor. It would do well to flesh out a coliseum game, as the ones on gamecube felt slightly lacking.
@wayward I agree. It would be nice as a bonus mode for a new Stadium game.
The good thing is that they would have all the Pokemon models from the main game, so it would minimise the work needed.
Have the main Stadium mode, bonus minigames, and maybe a two-player Snap mode, where players compete for who can earn the most points. Maybe divide the levels into Morning / Afternoon / Night, and make them seasonal too (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter). Having 12 different variations for each stage should allow them to include all the Pokemon.
i dont get whats so hard about making a sequel why would you need to go all out on something "new" to add to the game? you have tons of pkm, add miiverse posting, new cameras or something to take different types of shots, more locations and your pretty much set this type of game doesnt rly need gimmicks >.>
but i agree on the Colosseum series game we need another one more like the first one though the second one was kinda boring to me and the main character just was bad
Allow us to pick a starter that determines how we explore the locations, more than 1 save file, and online.
I'd love another Pokémon Snap game. The original was awesome.
Dunno why he's acting like everyone is asking for a remake with better graphics, of course that would be boring. The same thing but in completely new levels, with new pokemon and more unpredictable/hidden things? Would be incredible! The best thing for me about Snap was seeing the Pokemon in their natural habitats and interacting with them.
A new snap game would be awesome! but it would be a lot more fun if you were able to go where you want instead of cruising predefined courses.
This was much more encouraging than his response to wanting a new Stadium game, where he basically said there's no reason for one...
They need to bring a new snap to wii u! I mean.. gamepad?! Hello?! What else does he wants? Its so perfect and like it was made for snap! >o<
@EarthboundBenjy
I dunno about that, I think its more to do with wether the games are 3D or 2D, they seem to try to use the more detailed cries when the hardware allows it. The stadium games used neither after all, and Pikachu says its name in X&Y.
Anyone know if Pokemon Snap came out before or after the anime episodes with Todd 'Snap' in them?
I they think Pokémon Snap is too complicated, how about a Pikmin Snap? Or anything else for that matter, the GamePad is perfect for those types of games.
@DarkNinja9 Indeed, XD was a little over the top, I prefer Colosseum over XD any day.
@Zombie_Barioth Todd was introduced in 1998 in the anime, Pokémon Snap was released in 1999.
I think it's a bit ironic how Masuda wants to avoid making a straight-up port, when historically Pokemon remakes have done little more than update game mechanics... But it's a good sign that he's aware of the demand for a new Pokemon Snap.
At this point the only Pokemon I would be interested in is Pokemon Snap. I had more fun with that then the main games.
oh c'mon stop with this "we need a new thing to make a new game" F-Zero and Snap only need an HD entry.
They really can't think of a way to evolve the gameplay to make it more interesting with a console whose controller practically begs to be used as an in-game camera?! The WiiU would be perfect for Pokemon Snap 2 with the Gamepad acting as a camera, being able to turn 360 degrees to view the environment, and interacting in unique ways with the TV and Pokemon around you. I'm no game dev, and I can think of 10 different ways to use the WiiU's features to enhance Pokemon Snap. There are no excuses, Game Freak. Just say you don't wanna do it if that's what it is.
The game pad is perfect for this type of game. I hope it gets greenlit.
Would be a good idea, but I'd be more excited for a new Ranger. It was really fun, and they need to make another.
I don't think too much of the gameplay should change or be updated. I loved the original for its simplicity. It was just so fun to try to trigger the environment to get the pokemon to come out and then snap that perfect photo. I could see the gamepad being used well though. It could act as the camera. Oh man that game would be brilliant on the Wii U!! Make it happen Nintendo!! Please.
the gamepad has ENDLESS potential to breathe fresh air into a remake or new enrty!!! sigh
Not too crazy about Snap, still was fun though...wouldn't mind seeing a sequel for the Wii U.
He insults the Wii U hardware, in particular the GamePad by not admitting the obvious gimmicks to be exploited there for a new game. If any property could make FULL freakin use of the gamepad, and ALL the Wii U's connectivity features, it would be Pokemon Snap. Why omit any comment about Wii U hardware features? Bad PR and was better off not saying anything.
"As a player I definitely want to play a cool new version of Pokemon Snap but at the same time......................"
(Another rant) This is an incredibly poor job of trying to fit in with the average game players in a fanbase, or demonstrate that he's on their level. There's an obvious agenda behind the first comment, to derail the fantasy of a Pokemon Snap sequel due to the bad corporate-like excuse of "Insufficient data", or in this case insufficient innovation. That's not how an average gaming fan talks. Ever. This is what you'd expect from a gaming fan: "Oh hey, the gamepad has all these cool features, and MiiVerse connectivity.....HOLY CRAP! Pokemon Snap would take advantage of all of those features like no other game, and then some!!!!"
Ok, done rant
to be honest i hated this game when it came out
but a sequel would make a Great Eshop game
Free roaming would probably be a good idea, especially since it would feel more natural with gyroscopic controls.
imagine the possibilities, could be a blend of pokemon snap and beyond good & evil!
According to him, tweets about Hoenn remakes gave him a bit of motivation to actually make ORAS.
Get tweeting to the director of Snap!
I would so love a new pokemon snap
I still have my cart for this game and I remember having many good times with it! A sequel would be most welcome!
Please, a new one!
Pokemon Snap. Yes. A new one would be very welcome. I don't even really play Pokemon but I loved that game and the GamePad is begging for it.
I would definitely like to see where they could go with a more modern Pokemon Snap. The original was such a fun, creative, arcade-y style game with a lot of replay value (IIRC, I haven't played it since I was a kid...) that also felt like it breathed more life into the Pokemon world as you were given a window into the habitats and daily lives of these Pokemon. I think that last piece is the most important part to capture, which is why some cool new ideas there would really get me excited.
A new pokemon snap would be fine and all, but I need my Drill Dozer 2 first! Come on and make it happen Game Freak!
@Octane
I thought as much, it was late so I didn't really feel like searching for it.
Thanks.
I guess maybe Snap really was intended to be an "anime game". That or they just got the idea from it and borrowed the character.
Wii U panorama was a perfect example how you could use a Gamepad in new Pokémon Snap. Heck, my friend said he´d BUY A WII U if Pokémon Snap 2 was coming! The only Pokémon game Wii U currently has a crappy beat em up called Rumble U. I have no idea why there aren't announced Pokémon games in development for Wii U (maybe they'll port that Pokken Fighters later). Is it because Wii U sells badly? How about helping it with some Pokémon games? Also F-Zero.
@supa
Drill Dozer 2... don't forget to bring that to Europe this time.
I'm just wondering—with all the quirky minigames PokéMon has—why PokéMon Snap couldn't fit itself into any of the main titles as a minigame.
The Wii U would be perfect for Pokemon Snap. Make it free-roam instead of on-rails, throw in the new Pokemon, have some nice graphics, add online and miiverse and there you go.
We need this and a sequel/successor to Colosseum/XD.
EDIT: Or we could have a Snap mini-game/mode in a Colosseum/XD successor.
Today I downloaded Pokemon snap on my wii u and I can't help but to have all these amazing ideas for a new game on the wii u. Possibly Pokemon SnapU? I've read alot of comments and realize that a lot of people are thinking the same thing. This is the first game I've bought on my n64 back in 1999,second game was donkey Kong 64 and u don't even want to get me started on wanting a new version of that game. Lol. But as for "SnapU", I think a first person camera mode would be interesting and has tons of potential with the wii u. Catching Pokemon in a natural state and seeing how they react when they can or cannot see you would be a very cool experience. It should be broken up into 5 to 10 levels for each of the regions, that way you can be familiar with what you are looking for in case you're an old school fan or modern day fan. The ability to heal wounded Pokemon would also be a nice feature. There should be multiple mode types as well, ie; free roam, classic (on rails), flying (on the back of dragonite, charizard, or another large flying Pokemon of whatever region you're in), underwater, stadium mode (pictures of Pokemon battling), online (including sharing pictures on Miiverse), plus all the extras and mini games they could throw in there. We need this game. I guarantee it would be the best selling Pokemon game in history. Who's with me on this?
