We've known for a long time that the new title in the Fatal Frame series would be using the GamePad as though it were a real camera, but this is the first good look at how it plays out within gameplay. The trailer shows the player battling numerous ghosts and spirits with the GamePad by taking photographs of them, rotating the controller in order to deal the most 'damage' to these spooky spectres.
The atmosphere of the game is very reminiscent of recent horror games such as the Slender series, using dynamic lighting and fog in order to create the feeling of being lost and alone in an unfamiliar environment, and the trailer proves that this is a game you should probably avoid playing in the dark.
There's still been no confirmation about a release outside of Japan, but some previous games in the series have been, so we're holding our breath.
Check out the new trailer below as well as two TV ads, all from Nintendo's official Japanese YouTube channel.
Will you be importing this game or will you simply hold out for an EU/US release? Let us know in the comments!

I'll say it now, Nintendo has to bring this to the West in order to continue supporting their home console and bulk out the library of games. But Nintendo probably won't. It's far too logical.
Hopefully NoA decides to actually localize this game. They have not localized a single Fatal Frame game yet.
With so many horror/survival games coming out on Xbox and PS4, Nintendo should bring this to EU/NA.
This seems scarier than Five Nights at Freddie's. :3
This looks AMAZING!!!!!
We stand better chance of Fallout 4 being Wii-U exclusive than seeing this game in 2015.
This game looks so good, I will definitely buy it if it comes to EU. Even if it comes here it will still take some time though :/
Please localize this game Nintendo....
Holy balls, the game looks epic! Hopefully it comes to EU !
I loved Project Zero 2 on the Wii. This game looks like it shares a lot of the things that made that game stand out as well as having the perfect controller possible for the franchise! Here's hoping they won't make us wait too long : )
Love this series but not sure I like this gamepad stuff, looks very gimmicky.
At least give us a limited release like with Xenoblade…i really think have all these unique games taking advantage of the gamepad would sell help emphasize the gamepads importance especially to the non-believers. I had to send in my gamepad out for repair for a month and i felt so lost…i cant imagine not having a gamepad…well played Nintendo well played
@Peach64 Its how you would use any other camera. The better the angle the better the accuracy. It seems normal here.
Only way I'll ever get to play this is if I import a Japanese Wii U & a copy of the game.
At a certain point in the story trailer...you can tell that they made this using the D.O.A. engine
@CaviarMeths Spirit Camera.
Ha'way Nintendo of Europe, get this localised ASAP!
I wish that NIntendo can do the camera right. I used the camera in Game and Wario and I did not think that the gamepad actually acts well as a camera in that game.
Well, Nintendo may decide not to import this game outside Japan...
@Peach64 dude this was MADE for the gamepad!
This is the perfect tech demo for the GamePad. Heck, any camera game is!
Well, time to learn Japanese, then...
Gaaaahhhh, we definitely need this one in Europe and North America.
Now more than ever. Please please Nintendo surprise all of us and release FF4 HD and FF5 in the western countries.
Day one perch.
I would even buy the Japanese version, if there was no archaic region lock existing on Wii U (and 3DS). So no possibility to import, would not make any sense.
Damn the physics are completely unrealistic still this looks awesome.
if they don't release this game outside japan is because they don't give a damn about wii u, man this game is perfect to show how awesome the system is, i'd love to play fatal frame, why nintendo? why do you make us wait to crush our dreams? lol
I want this game so bad. I love ghosts!
Its sad, im a huge survival horror fan and have never played a fatal fram game but after seeing this I would love if they brought this over to the west I definitely wanna try it.
Really enjoyed project zero 2 release on wii so fingers crossed this makes it to eu .... Nintendo already got my money on this one
I hope this game comes over to the US, but I probably will not purchase it. These kind of games get to intense for my over active imagination, especially since I generally can only play late at night after the rest of the house is in bed.
It shows what an irrational and out if touch company Nintendo is that we're even debating whether this is coming to the rest of the world. This could be a flagship title like 'The Last of Us', but they'd rather keep selling us kiddie games I guess.
@arronishere You say that like they're not already busy. Keep in mind that NoA's team is the Treehouse staff
@WaLzgi
Sounds like NoA is a really small company, then.
Don't you think there are more people over there at NoA to do localization stuff?
As most here I also hope that NoA/NoE (for us Europeans) do release it in North America/Europe and don't let it become another Nintendo exclusive not only to other consoles but to other Nintendo console owners outside of Japan, too.
@Peach64 Seriously? I'd argue the Gamepad is a perfect fit for the camera mechanic that also happens to be the core gameplay element.
@Peach64 Have you ever played a Fatal Frame game? When I first saw the GamePad's functionality revealed for the system, I immediately thought of Fatal Frame. I must have made at least 10 posts on this site since the WiiU's release talking about how the GaemPad was made for Fatal Frame.
Bring this to the west NoA!!
@kensredemption
Don't forget the 2 Resident Evils, Bloodborne, that Alien Marines something survival game. They really should release this on the west.
No Resident Evil coming to the Wii U ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh ahhhhhh
Please Nintendo localize this. The bulk of development money has already been spent creating the game. How much does localization actually cost? Worried about distribution and manufacturing costs? Make it eshop only title.
@KoopaTrooper I alway wonder that myself. I mean, it can't be that difficult to localize a game, since all you need to do is translate the game's text and get voice actors (which isn't even necessary in a lot of cases). Why can't they translate the game while writing the script? Well, maybe I'm lacking knowledge and am just oversimplifying things.
Pretty sure they'll bring it west, but only for Europe.
Hopefully hackers can Crack the Wii U soon.
@Ambermoon
Considering all the games they decided to skip localizing, I'd say NoA's tree house is really, really small. Possibly smaller than XSEED. Or at least, it probably shrunk considerably during the last decade.
@AVahne HomeBew has been our only salvation to play FF games on the Wii, in the States. If Nintendo doesn't want my money, then I don't have any other choice. Though, I feel it may have a better chance because if they do localize it for Europe (english translation), they can just localize it for the eShop in the States (no need to make discs, cases, etc if that was "really" the excuse back then.
@hcfwesker
Well, I'm not gonna resort to piracy. Even if the publishers (Nintendo) are stupid, the developers still need to get paid.
Anyway, I just want to remove region lock via a hack. Even FF4's USB translation loader would be a great idea here.
@MajinSoul
Yes, you are.
Localization isn't just translating, you have to fit it into speechboxes, have it make sense for a foreign audience etc. Not to forget testing.
It looks far too beautiful for Nintendo not to bring it over here - in other words it won't be released outside of Japan because Nintendo is backwards...
Puulleazeee!!!!! this game looks awesome, and what a way to showcase the gamepad in NA!!! cmon Nintendo, you've surprised us before, now's the time to do so!!!
Please Nintendo...please bring this state side. You have yet to grace our shores with this fantastic series(though I did get Spirit Camera day one on 3DS, having to play in bright lights and all).
I want to give you my money, and some crazy limited edition version for $200.00 with Project zero 2 on it...I'd buy that too.
Please Nintendo, please take my money.
We need to do a Miiverse campaign like they did with getting Bayonetta 1 included with 2 and that new one to have it sell a min of 1 million copies.
@UltimateDespair
Don't worry, it might release in Europe. Though if you're American, that means you'll have to import a European Wii U. Which means more money for Nintendo, EXACTLY what Nintendo truly intended the region lock for.
@TobiasAmaranth ...Is that supposed to mean much?
Considering the state and situation of the Wii U, if this game is not getting localized in other regions, Nintendo is officially a moron of a company.
For some reason this game makes me miss Shenmue.
Also, can we please get a Pokemon Snap for Wii U?
Nintendo needs to bring this over and also a Fatal Frame 1-4 collection! With the lack of actually good survival horror games on consoles these days, these could do great for a system that really needs to flesh out its library. Wii U isn't going to survive with 5 games a year, hardcore gamers want choices.
My household eats survival horror like candy but Silent Hill went downhill and Resident Evil is an action shooter now. This would be an instant buy for me if it comes to the states.
@montrayjak
Like for real though, how was this and Pokemon Snap U NOT launch titles? Perfect kinds of games to sell the gamepad to consumers AND developers yet here we are unsure if the former will localized and begging for the latter to actually exist.
Is it bad that i want that game in my hands?
@PrincessSugoi Silent Hills and The Evil Within say hello
Guys, guys, relax
This game will make it to the west, Wii u needs all the games it can get and Nintendo knows this, we may have to wait a while but trust me, it will happen.
@ejvirzi practice your 3rd eye and you will see real ghosts They do excist
I'm intrigued, and I'd likely give it a shot, were it to come here. The library always needs more variety, after all.
This is a game nintendo needs to localize
Nintendo better not skip the rest of the world this time! And bring a HD remake of 4 as well! Still really really REALLY sad they never brought 4 to Europe.
Can you all stop screaming at Nintendo? This a Tecmo Koei game. Bug them for localization.
@element187: lol, no. It's developed by Tecmo Koei and Nintendo, published by Nintendo.
puts away more money for a japanese wiiu
