Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS hit Japanese shops late last week – some even released it before the agreed date – and it's safe to say that no one is surprised by seeing it at number one in the charts today; Nintendo has already announced over one million launch weekend sales when downloads are included.
Media Create reports sales of nearly a million - physical retail — in less than a week; that's a tremendous achievement for a single game, especially considering the highly anticipated Destiny only sold a fraction of that figure. Yokai Watch 2 still holds its own and Mario Kart 8 is still a strong contender at number 8.
Nintendo's presence is much more encouraging than last week in software, with Sony's consoles slowly being pushed away and Microsoft left out in the cold for another week.
You can see the charts in their entirety below; lifetime sales are in brackets.

This week in hardware the 3DS LL (XL) has clawed back some sales, no doubt thanks to Super Smash Bros. and its impressive results. The original 3DS has also seen a little boost, but the LL is the one to buy according to these numbers. The Wii U has hardly changed since last week, but with its version of Super Smash Bros. just on the horizon we can expect an increase in sales as winter rapidly approaches. The biggest winner outside of the 3DS is Sony's PS4, with Destiny pushing it up to second in the results; in the process it's passed Nintendo's home console for the first time in a number of weeks.
Check out the numbers for yourself below. Last week's sales are in brackets.
1. 3DS LL – 31,602 (23,624)
2. PlayStation 4 – 23,623 (7,299)
3. PlayStation Vita – 12,331 (14,441)
4. 3DS – 7,967 (5,931)
5. Wii U – 7,062 (7,349)
6. PlayStation 3 – 6,083 (6,139)
7. Xbox One – 3,015 (25,674)
8. PlayStation Vita TV – 817 (910)
9. PSP – 101 (288)
10. Xbox 360 – 96 (126)

Power of smash creating absolutely smashing results.
Smashing good results, for everyone not Xbox.
At this point i feel that even the words "Thrashing the competition" are an understatement.
Edit: Maybe something more like Total Annihilation?
Holy Moly

Yokai Watch 2 is still higher but they've released 2 versions. Let's see how Pokemon ORAS will do.
Well....it is to be expected no?
Wow. Now I'm REALLY curious to see how well the WiiU version does! Also, good week for the PS4.
Have to say though Hyrule Warriors absolutely tanked in Japan.
And like I see these are for week 8/9 to 14/9...and Smash came out on 13/9...it means only 2 days of sale it reached such numbers.
Expect next week results...similar figures
And XB1 is dead last in only its second week of launch. Looks like the baseline is going to settle under 1k, probably around 500 per week once the launch window is over.
Sony finally got around to announcing games that Japanese gamers actually care about for PS4, so I expect to see it sell great through the holidays, leaving the neck-to-neck race with the Wii U in the dust.
But yeah, the 3DS is a juggernaut.
Holy Pac bits. I mean I knew it would do extremely well but...10 times the sales of the second place game? Oh my god...Sakurai could rule the world if he wanted to.
Heck of a week for PS4. Destiny appears to have helped it greatly this week. Wii U continues to slow down but, if I'm not mistaken, Bayonetta is out this week? Hopefully Wii U sees a burst for a few weeks. Fatal Frame coming soon too.
Poor XB1.......it is falling fast. Japan looks like a lost cause for now.
Interesting that Destiny boosted PS4 sales, even though the game is also on the PS3.
Just... wow. Talk about "smashing" the competition! That gap is beyond huge! Looks like Sony's going OK too with those console sales so good for them there but yeah. The Smash sales are the clear highlight!
Wow.
The compare between smash and the other new entries is "slighlty" different XD
The 'kanpai' sound must be echoing in all Kyoto right now >o>;;;
It beat out the lifetime sales of Mario Kart 8 in under a week, yeesh.
I'm hoping the one-two punch of "Bayonetta 2" and "Fatal Frame" (why hasn't this been announced for NA yet?) will put the Wii U numbers back in the teens for a few weeks. Neither on it's own is going to do that, but together they have a shot at closing out this quarter with an uptick.
I am disappointed in WiiU Sales. WTH Japan?
Good for Smash 3DS.
And this is with the New 3DS releasing in just a month, im pretty sure almost everyone is waiting for that and only those who dont care about it are getting a 3DS now, so those numbers should be MUCH higher (which will show on October 11)
It's surprising that even in Japan there is hype for Destiny even though it's a very generic shooter.
Congrats Nintendo!!!
xD I literally laughed out loud at destiny's sales xD
Dat PS4 boost tho.
@XFsWorld Hmm, true. Edit: If Destiny did that for PS4, think what Smash'll do for Wii U!!!
PS Vita outselling regular 3DS, bit surprised about that.
@Monkeh
I would imagine a lot of people are waiting for the 'New' 3DS coming by the end of the year.
That's a pretty impressive number for smash. Very good hardware boost for the PS4 though. Xbone is obviously going to fall quickly to maybe slightly better results than the 360.
We knew it would be good, maybe not THIS good. Kudos to Sakurai and team!
I guess you can say it was "Destiny" for Smash to be on top of Japan.
BOOOM!! Here's your "Nintendo is doomed" article, haters! > I know, I know, It's annoying to express like that but damn, it's so nice to finally see Nintendo winning at something in terms of sales and boy just look what an epic way of reaching No 1. Not even Destiny couldn't kill the Smash Bros. hype! Hoping the same succesful results for Wii U on the upcoming weeks when Bayo 2, Fatal Frame and of course Smash (the big one or "the real version" of Smash) comes out! Congrats, to Sakurai and team and everyone at Nintendo Now hurry the hell up, Oct 3!!!!!!!!!!
Destiny wouldn't stay in the charts for very long
Good news!
BTW, I have an extra NA code, my friend's 3DS doesn't work anymore, If anyone needs it, post your email.
3ds hardware sales didn't go up much. Either the Japan customers are waiting for the New models or seems most of them who wanted the game already had the system.
@Punished_Boss or Hyrule Warriors. Great drop in sales for both.
@Devlind themuteci[email protected] is email, thanks if you still have the code.
@FalconDensetsu @sanguine I've sent the code to both of you, the fastest wins it
@FalconDensetsu Sorry, but I've seen some people trying to sell it on ebay even now, so this is a way to avoid that :/
Wow. A week of smash surpass 6 months of Mario kart.... The smash is real bros.
Ps: that drop in sales for xbone is just sad. Very sad.
Yoki Watch has to be stopped
@DarkJamD
Oh that, well it happens. The "warriors" fanbase aren't really on Wii U.
Comment Section: For goodness sake people does the mere mention of SSB enable code begging? When deleted: I'm not crazy, you're crazy!
Surprised at both how well Destiny sold and how there was barely a bump for 3DS. I know people might be holding off the new model, but a year ago this week Monster Hunter 4 launched and 3DS sold 276,000. That's a real system seller. I think Smash is going to be like Mario Kart, in that it sells amazingly well, but probably doesn't do much for hardware since it's aimed at typical Nintendo fans, and I think most typical fans will have a 3DS and Wii U by now.
Those numbers are for japan alone, imagine the sales of it when it reach overseas... The internet gone mad about a simple demo, the full game then... LoL Also, that boost in PS4 sales were nice, it will be interesting to see what games like Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy XV could do if Destiny (that's a "big marketed game that don't live up to it's hype" type of game) sold this well. And Xbox 1 was doomed even before it released in Nippon
Xbot fans: Xbox one is bester than Wii U!
Me: Yet Wii U has double the Xbox sales
@Jazzer94 not really if you compare it to samurai warrior 4 which is a much more established franchise. Apple and oranges bro.
@Devlind haven't read all the comments so someone probably already got the code but if not my email is [email protected]
Wow, Xbox one is not doing at all well in Japan. Am surprised no ones commented on that.
@Jazzer94 It kinda pisses me off too. Because this is showing Tecmo that Japan did not at all appreciate the amazing game they created. I kinda fear for the Western sales only because I want more of these games created.
Hmm, perhaps Nintendo should have waited and released this the same time the new 3DS hit stores. Likely would have had more of an impact on hardware there. Still impressive results and given this was only a couple of days, I reckon it'll still be on top this week with some big figures.
Surprised Japan even cared about Destiny at all and enough to actually give the PS4 a boost?
Sad to see Flopstiny selling on hype alone.
I'm very curious how much momentum/hype Bayonetta has in Japan.
Wonderful 101 didn't exactly fly off the shelves but the original did fairly well in it's home country, albeit on a system which had far more units.
But... the internet told me Destiny was going to be the greatest video game ever created. EVER!!
I'm just glad that Sakurai's hardwork hasn't gone unnoticed so far and there is loads of hype for this game in America and (hopefully) in Europe as well, so I hope and pray that both versions of Smash does well worldwide...
This is excellent news. I can see those sales being mirrored over here in the EU/US.
I've played about 8 hours of the Smash demo. I have never, in all of my life, put 8 hours into a demo.
So basically I can't wait for the full game. Nintendo rules!
@Hy8ogen If you compare it to the PS4 version sales yeah it did better but the PS3 sold more than a 100k first week. For a combination of two big series the sales have been lacklustre.
really surprising that 3DS will sell with the N3DS just around the corner and that Destiny will sell so well in Japan (I'm guessing they had the bundle there and some people may have just wanted a white PS4)
"Don't you put any stock in this Destiny hogwash!"
Kinda expected for smash, but 10 times, woah... Good reason to get the download off the eshop, cause gamestop WILL run out of copies.
Never underestimate the power of Smash...
@Jazzer94 It is quite unfair to compare it to the PS3 as it has a much larger install base.
@CaviarMeths lol "Leaving the Wii U in the dust"? Wait till Bayonetta 2 and smash bros. And THEN you can say this. I'm sure Japanese gamers will eat up both of these games.
Well put subline: "Sells more than ten times second placed Destiny"
And Nintendo will make way more money with it, since Super Smash Bros. was not as rediculously expensive in production as Destiny. Oh, and it's more fun anyways.
@Hy8ogen Well being honest every possible comparison between HW and SW4 is unfair in some way.
Nintendo just Falcon Punched the competition.
Physical copies sell more than digital downloads, yes? I'm interested to see if they show what the physical vs digital ratio is.
The Vita is outselling the 3DS O.O
Now i want too know the sales when smash comes to north america.
This HAS to be good news for the Wii U aka Definitive version, right? I mean, who wouldn't want to play with improved, crisper graphics, different stages/music and modes, right?
Again, not surprised. I'd get Smash over any "revolutionary" game any day.
Hopefully this means Nintendo realized the money-printer their crossover fighter series really is.
I don't see how this statement can be true: "with Sony's consoles slowly being pushed away", having the PS4 sold more than 3 times what it did last week and the others Sony consoles holding their own (between 85 and 90% of their sales of last week).
Next week, expect sales of the Smash Bros 3DS game to drop to about 200,000 units. Which by itself is awesome.
Expect Smash Bros to break the 3,000,000 units sold worldwide by X-mas.
If Smash doesn't push 5 million copies by year's end (on both systems combined) I'd consider dropping the Wii U if I were Nintendo. Postpone the New 3DS in the west and make a higher def handheld, dropping consoles entirely.
In my personal opinion, if Smash fails, this console generation is done for the 'Big' N (I can think of another b word that more appropriately describes the Wii U - bust).
Oh and for all the gripes players have with Destiny, it's now shown it can sell systems. I can only imagine what MGS V and KH3 will do for PS4.
LOL XBNONE NUMBERS!!
@BSFsontails1012 The only problem with that is the eshop is bound to have problems, I'd guess nearly to the point of Christmas last year.
And when the wii u version is out
the wii u owns them all
1 million copies in less than a week is impressive for any game ,wow some games never sell a million copies ,this franchise is a goldmine for nintendo!
Xbox is doomed! (again a joke)
Grand Theft Auto V low price version?!
