Last week's Nintendo Direct "Indie Showcase" sizzle reel included a good number of new releases confirmed for the Wii U eShop. Two of these are being published by Ripstone, Knytt Undergound and Pure Chess, and the publisher has now confirmed that both are targeting a release of late 2013/early 2014.
Pure Chess is being developed by VooFoo Studios and will also come to the 3DS eShop for those that fancy a game on the road. The title will aim to accommodate both serious players and newcomers, with tutorials included to help beginners get started.
Knytt Underground is a game by Nicklas ‘Nifflas’ Nygren, and the Wii U version is being put together by Mathias Kærlev. This looks set to deliver a platforming exploration adventure, with plenty of characters to meet and the official details promising a "Zen-like experience".
Ripstone itself is an independent publisher that supports Indies onto various platforms and Phil Gaskell, Co-Founder and Creative Director of the company, has made it clear that more projects are being planned for the eShop platforms.
We're committed to helping developers bring their games to as many digital channels as possible and this announcement demonstrates that commitment. We think Nintendo gamers are going to love spending hours exploring the world of Knytt Underground and will be blown away by the visual quality of Pure Chess, and we hope to announce more games for eShop in the future.
With Pure Chess heading to the 3DS eShop, too, Ripstone will be making a move with three games on two platforms. Let us know what you think below.

2014 is the constant theme. I would love to know about some Indy titles that are coming in 2013...
@XCWarrior Scram Kitty, Shovel Knight & Super Ubie Land should all be hitting before the end of the year. Also keep an eye open for Ballpoint Universe, Monkey Pirates & TNT Racers
Already got Knytt Underground off the PlayStation+ when it was released, as it didn't cost anything extra. But i'll keep on eye out for other indie games on the Wii U.
I hope Pure Chess has online multiplayer.
@Play-Doh_25 It will Have! As Well as DLC on eshop, Check The interview Nintendoenthusiast had with them! They might even consider including Mario Characters
Just an FYI - Knytt Underground had a lot of cursing in it. I'm a NYer and even I was taken aback. Playing w/ my kids watching got dicey to the point where I just stopped. Something about a battery operated dildo in the rear made me realize it wasn't kid friendly. I suppose Nintendo will require some editing.
Smart move making Pure Chess available on 3DS too. I'm definitely interested in it.
Knytt has cursing!? That doesn't necessarily bother me, but it does not fit with my memories of the PC games at all. It was completely minimalistic with little dialog if any — pretty sure it was none.
I was hoping chess would hit the eShop I made a topic a few months back asking if people were interested in playing online!
I am stoked about Knytt Underground making it to the Wii U, it's a game I've wanted to play for a while, but I just can't get myself to play very much on the PC.
I'm mostly looking forward to pure chess. I used to love playing chess (still play on my ipad every now and then)
Online multiplayer will probably make it epic.
I need to see more from Knytt Underground, but the visuals do look amazing.
@AMR TNT Racers looks promising. If it has online and receives a good store, that could be my next eshop purchase.
@XCWarrior I'm hoping for online multiplayer as well, would be a missed opportunity if they didn't add it. The only thing that worries me is that the dev's keep talking about online leaderboards and haven't explicitly said the game will have online multiplayer (even though the Wiiware original did). I'll probably still pick it up but that would definitely sour my enthusiasm a little bit.
Does anyone know if there will be battle animations (so to speak) on Pure Chess? The footage from the sizzle reel seemed to show pieces just disappearing once they've been taken.
