As a website that prides itself on bringing you the most interesting, relevant and occasionally important Nintendo news, we here at Nintendo Life realise that we've been missing an important weapon in our arsenal: an anonymous source. While we normally prefer to name our sources, whether reporting news from other websites or from our own contacts, we're learning that the biggest stories can only come from those with no name. We've cited an anonymous source occasionally, though that was in relation to Nintendo Download updates due the following day. Now we want the big stories.
The latest to start to gather speed around the web is that a new title in The Legend of Zelda series will arrive on Wii U in 2014. There are details of a huge team working on the new title, a powerful graphics engine and an enormous forest temple larger than Hyrule Field in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. This source is reliable because they predicted a concept similar to Miiverse, as well as achievements, for Wii U. Of course, we wouldn't dream of suggesting that these could have been predicted by anyone with common sense, as Nintendo was always going to improve on the social and online weaknesses of Wii.
Still, in the interest of bringing you the hottest news, we're currently working on our own anonymous source. Naturally we can't name him or her, so we'll call them 'Red Squirrel', due to their fondness for Conker's Bad Fur Day. This source is well connected with Nintendo, of course, and we've stocked up on dark trench coats so that we don't attract too much attention when we make our face to face rendezvous.
We've had an initial meeting with Red Squirrel, who confirmed that Nintendo is working on a new Zelda title, but wouldn't say which system, or even if there was more than one Zelda in the works. Squirrel even shared the exciting news that a new 3D Mario title is probably in development for Wii U, and that it's likely to arrive by 2015. Recent comments from Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime were also borne out, as apparently Retro Studios is working on a video game, which is good to know. Our source also shared an unconfirmed report that Nintendo is thinking about future games in franchises such as Kirby, and that a full-fat 3DS Pokémon title is in the works.
These may be educated guesses, but we'll certainly have greater trust in our source should any of these predictions come to fruition.
Of course, we at Nintendo Life will share rumours with you on occasions, because it can be fun to speculate about what games may come in the future. We'll also make sure that it's clear that they are only rumours, and will only apply the full status of confirmed news when it's clearly indisputable fact or quoting named sources; we'll also continue to issue corrections if a story transpires to have any inaccuracies after publication.
And don't forget, Red Squirrel is on the case.

Shhh! Mum's the word.
Ken sent me...
no wait, that was for something else.
Like a spy movie. I'm liking this!
This squirrel... isn't he more like a "newt"? Just guessing...
James didn't happen to like Conkers bad fur day did he? Hmmm he was into animal crossing so it seems unlikely it's him seeing as the two games are very different...
Love the Red Squirrel, I hope he/she gets a sidekick too, working in a 3rd party studio maybe?
Such hard hitting predictions. A new Mario game? They could have only gotten that from the inside.
How exciting! Now I need to learn who this "Red Squirrel" is...
@Token_Girl lol Yes, such bold statements. Clearly this guy is in the know.
I'm shocked and awed that Nintendo is working on Mario and Zelda titles.
I wouldn't be surprised if it's James Newton lol... however, he only does editorial stuff for Nintendo of Europe right?
Jam...... I mean ""Red Squirrel "" (or should that be Blue Hedgehog humm!?
2014?????? 2015????????? How is that even good. I was expecting 2013 and maybe 14! By then the system is going to come under a whole lot of fire from the other companies new systems!
Oh man its so James & I'm saddened by the distance to a new Legend of Zelda game, guess I'll be getting a Wii U in 2 years time then Unless they release a Mario Kart for Wii U earlier.
Ok, kudos for turning a rumour story into Zeldagate. You made my day, Thomas. Thanks
I'd like to think the Zelda 2014 story is true, if only because it sounds like a true realisation of what Zelda can be. We'll see, 2014 is the absolute earliest we'll see anything either way
As anyone who follows us on Twitter should now know, the legendary Daddynewts is NOT Red Squirrel.
Yeah my writing name is Red alright, but should I use an animal name to go along, it would have to be a fox ^^'
Oh was that a secret? Well don't mind me, mums the word.
Lol James was my first thought but ok.
Huh? What? Oh. Got it.
I read about that Zelda rumor just now (and sent you guys a news tip, not realizing it was mentioned in this article). Pretty cool stuff for sure. I hope it's true as it sounds quite amazing and the descriptions are pretty detailed.
On topic, I'm always skeptical of "anonymous sources" and any site that relies on them (ahem I could name a few), but at the same time it is fun to relish in the possibilities that these rumors sometimes provide.
I will say, though, that most of the stuff you guys listed in this article were "no duh" topics for me. Of course Nintendo's working on a 3D Mario for Wii U; of course Retro is working on a new game; and why would a full 3DS Pokemon NOT be in the works? All of these things seem quite obvious to me and are mostly a given. Still, I suppose it's not bad to have a more semi-official confirmation.
Anyway, I look forward to hearing more from "Red Squirrel." Sounds exciting!
@FiveDigitLP Just to avoid any doubt about the paragraph with "no duh" rumours, that was deliberate. This article is making a point about the nature of some "anonymous source" stories that are often seen on the web, while also throwing in a bit of humour. That particular section is sarcastic, and I wanted to make that absolutely clear to anyone who has misunderstood
Hopefully the article as a whole makes that clear.
If I know my internets; I'd say at least 95% of all rumours on the net in regards to gaming are derived from the imaginary developer uncles of kids; with too much time on their hands; thankfully me and my imaginary friends are not related and they mostly ignore me anyway
Wait what? A main-series Pokemon game on the 3DS? A 3D Mario game may be released on Wii U? It is possible a Zelda game may be released? Those are some pretty bold predictions, Mr. Squirrel =D
@C-Olimar You bet, Squirrel's got the inside info we all crave.
I really don't get why the big first party titles don't appear earlier, I can understand third parties getting slowly onto the bandwagon but one would guess that Nintendo themselves knew long before the first finished dev kits what specs and architecture their Wii U would have and could have started development on new Zelda, Metroid and Mario 3D titles way before it seems they did. Just my 2 cents.
Y'know, a dungeon as big as Hyrule field in OoT isn't really that impressive because Hyrule Field isn't actually that big, it just feels big because of how empty it is. Now, if we were talking TP Hyrule Field size, that would be something.
@shinpichu True but this is just one dungeon. I can't remeber any Zelda dungeons being THAT big...
James?...No...
COOL!
this is excellent! I always come here for info. in fact, this is pretty much the only site I go to for news. thanks for doing such a great job!
always good to go anonymous
Every one, every single one of those predictions, is the most obvious and easiest rumor to propagate. A new 3D mario for the Wii U? Within three years? Holy cow, no way! You mean Nintendo isn't going to completely abandon their mascot character on their new system? Go figure! A new Zelda title too? And Pokemon for 3DS "in the works"?
Please. It's almost guaranteed that every one of these is true, but it doesn't take a genious to guess them. The great thing about this is if Nintendo doesn't actually put out a new Zelda title in the time allotted, or somehow Pokemon completely skips the current handheld generation, it's likely that the rest of the predictions will come true anyway, and suddenly your "source" looks more reliable.
Maybe there's some inside information you're not sharing here, but so far this "anonymous source" of yours seems about as clairvoyant as a psychic hotline.
EDIT: You need to improve your sarcasm mode. That said, if the aim of this article is to shrug and say "no duh" to the whole thing, what's the point?
Also, I like how "Red Squirrel" really stretched there, suggesting that the next Zelda game would have a Forest Temple and that it would be bigger than previous incarnations. Big risk!
@Xilef You either remember Hyrule Feild being bigger than it was or you remember most dungeons being smaller than they were.
Plus, it's very vague as to exactly what "bigger" means.
somebodys keeping it real in da hood
wow least this is some good news the zelda one is obvious i mean they showed a quick vid in some of the game play of the wii u yeah just hope its rly good since skyward sword felt short to me
the weird part i find about this is the dates the games are being released... why so long? D: grrr finding any rumor about a new mario kart game would of been better then a 3d pkm or was that just me? o_o
@Happy_Mask
You there, in the bushes, you have until he count of five to tell me what you're referring to before I start throwing sharp objects. One...two...four...
