It's been over three months since the Wii received a new Virtual Console game in North America, and close to a staggering six months since Europe got a new old game to play with, but Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime wants to assure you the service isn't dead.
Speaking to Time about upcoming games, Fils-Aime specifically cited the Virtual Console as a source of upcoming Wii gaming goodness:
There is new content coming out on Wii, both on the Virtual Console and in terms of WiiWare – again small, digital bite-sized chunks of games.
We know that there are plenty of VC games waiting for release, so let's hope we're not left waiting too much longer for our next digital fix.

I believe in Reggie. He has never let me down before. And if he does, may God strike him down swiftly.
[headbutts Reggie!] Gimme my games!!! >:[
Could it be he said "There is no content coming out on Wii, both on the Virtual Console and in terms of WiiWare ..." and Time just didn't hear him right ?
Dear Reggie: Actions speak louder!
Nintendo can assure me the Wii VC is not dead by actually releasing some more classics.
what biggies are we still waiting for?
-Yoshi's Island?
-Donkey Kong 64?
-Earthbound? (lolneverhappening)
any other obvious ones I've missed?
I had always hoped to see Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2 (N64) released, but again, I guess it'll never happen...
For the love of all that is holy, EARTHBOUND.
Also Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire.
The actual NES has seen more action this year than VC with all the homebrew carts being made...
I doubt it's dead-dead.
They're probably just waiting until the Wii U comes out to put more.
He'd be technically correct, yet still manage to piss off everyone~
@biddenden_sue They were great games no doubt, but since the GB connectivity was so incremental to the whole experience, it wouldn't really make sense on VC without some way to hook up your old Red/Blue/Yellow cart.
I've almost completely given up on ever seeing games like Yoshi's Island and Star Fox on the VC but maybe, just maybe they were holding on to such games for 2012.
I would like some more imports, sega games and some more of the snes rpgs on VC. I don't see it happening though. I would also like a feature to play or move VC games on 3DS like the way you play PSone classics on both PS3 and PSP.
@Incognito_D Earthbound would be a great addition. Some more enix games would also be good additions.
@Rapadash6 I imagine Star Fox and Yoshi's Island haven't made it yet because of emulation issues, due to them using the Super FX and Super FX2 chips, respectively. Here's hoping they find a way to emulate them soon!
Let's all hope Earthbound is VC-bound
@SpaceKappa That's one possible explanation, but I've played Yoshi's Island on a Super Nintendo emulator in the past, so if that can handle it, I'd like to think Nintendo could emulate it on Wii with no problems!
@Incognito_D Well, my other explanation is that they re-released it on the DS not long ago and would rather people pay $35 for it instead of $8.
I'll believe Reggie when I actually see some new VC games.
How about releasing Starfox 2 for the SNES Virtual Console? The game's already finished! Why not?
Wake up little VC! No more sleep for you~
where the Hell are Terranigma,lufia,Illustion of Time(Gaia) secret of evermore,Yoshis Island,Lufia 2
Earthbound Zero too... It's complete anyways, and they had advertising ready for it.. But.. No, they held off because they thought it was too too late to release an NES game...
Yes. Yes it is dead....
Be nice to have more Neo Geo and arcade games.

Yeah! And the Easter Bunny comes with lots of eggs for all to enjoy.

Yum, I just love me some "small, digital bite-sized chunks of games."
What Reggie said=There is new content coming out on Wii, both on the Virtual Console and in terms of WiiWare – again
what he meaned=There is new content coming out on Wii U, both on the Virtual Console and in terms of Wii U Ware – again
reggie, don't just talk- make it happen. please.
Why are they still releasing games in Japan? Many of those games, out now in Japan, were also released in the states as well. Japan's even got Earthbound, for cripes!!!
Hey, I agree with Reggie, But In My Honest Opinion, Nintendo Needs to release Either Mega Man X2 or Lufia & The Fortress of Doom Next Week just to reassure that The Wii VC is not dead.
"Dear Reggie: Actions speak louder!"
bezerker99 wins the comments.
@SpaceKappa Wasn't that an all-new game though rather than a straight port? I've still got my SNES anyway, so doesn't matter either way to me!
Anyway, I'm sure Virtual Console can't be dead, because it will certainly be a feature of the Wii U - and if they're releasing old games on Wii U, they might as well be available to buy on the Wii Shop as well, because it's not like retro games will only be able to run on Wii U!
@Incognito_D yeah, Yoshi's Island is a completely different game. Its actually considered a sequel to SMW2: Yoshi's Island and include baby Luigi, Peach, Wario, DK, and Bowser.
As for the Virtual Console, all I want is Castlevania: Bloodlines and Legacy of Darkness and I'll be set, but no, I am left wanting!
If they still have plans for vc, then why haven't any games been released yet?
A lot of these comments have made good suggestions. For the sake of contributing, I'll add Mario Party 3 to the list.
Here's hoping for games like EarthBound, Mega Man 6 & 7, Mega Man X2 & X3, Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, Mischief Makers, and maybe, if we're lucky, Disney liscensed games. Ducktales and Darkwing Duck anybody?
To be honest the face looks more like its saying "Heh heh heh, they believe me AGAIN"
You're a heart breaker
Dream maker
Love taker don't you mess around with me
Body Harvest
Sub-Terrania
Mega Man 6
If you release those 3 games, you can retire the VC as far as I'm concerned.
@ SpaceKappa;
There is no problem emulating those FX chips. However, there may be legal problems getting access to the technology, which last I checked, is not owned by Nintendo.
You must keep in mind that Argonaut Games owns the rights to the Super FX chip. However, because Argonaut's current state of existence is completely different and perhaps non-existent, there are some very complicated legal issues surrounding emulating Argonaut's FX chip.
All legal issues aside though, there is no issue what-so-ever in emulating this chip. Just search on youtube for solid evidence of Yoshi's Island being emulated on the Wii. If a few guys in a basement can get Yoshi's Island or Star Fox running on the Wii perfectly, then Nintendo THEMSELVES can too (especially since they don't need to reverse engineer their emulators).
The only problem would be a legal issue surrounding the Super FX chip. But wait? Can't Nintendo reverse engineer the chip? YES! Well then why haven't they released Yoshi's Island or Star Fox?
Answer = Pure Laziness
Terrrrrrraaaaaaanigmaaaaaaa... O_O;;
Where's the original Contra for the NES? Why do we have the first Castlevania but not the first Contra yet?
Also, DK64, Pokemon Stadium 2, Megaman 6 and 7, and Mario Party 3 would be great candidates, too.
I call bullsh*t until we actually see something.

Who falls asleep for 6 months?
Reggie, stop lying to us.
You know and we know that they're not coming.
Show us that they exist.
Wipe your chin, Reg.
i smell catch up on the games that japan`s had for months.
As long as we see a nice transition for my games from Wii to WiiU I'll be good.
Can't you see it in bed, breathing? Oh, wait, it is dead. Reggie is just hiding under the bed pumping air up underneath.
i don't understand something: i am a nice person. i am pretty much non violent. yet every time is see reggie's smug face i want to walk up to him and give him such a SMACK! he doesn't even have to open his mouth to make me feel this. it's everpowering...
I hope Reggie reads the comments section of this news article. Things need to change. The natives are restless.
@StarDust
Japan has EarthBound on VC?!
Okay where's Earth Bound, Dragon Quests, Lufias, MM X's2+3, AND ILLUSION OF GAIA.OMG What's the dang holdup Nintender!
Lies. This douchebag needs to go.
I hope he doesn't mean more gems from the Sunsoft, Jaleco, G-Mode and Hudson catalogue.
REGGIE IS A LIAR!
The only time Reggie let us down is when he tried to play Mario kart 7
Well, we do know we're getting some stuff from Sega and Capcom. I just wish we'd know ahead of time what we're getting.
@edhe
Whay not anything from Sunsoft? They have lots of good games.
Lies.
After two and a half years of high promise but mostly disappointing results in owning a Wii, I've got pretty low expectations for anything but getting more bargains on B-grade disc games from 2-3 years ago (just got FF: Crystal Bearers and Metroid: Other M new for a combined $13).
More like a hibernation.
@43: Add Illusion of Gaia and Soul Blazer while you're at it. I'd download all three of those in a heartbeat.
I was actually thinking this morning how good it used to be, going into the Wii Shop (& here, of course) to see what the next batch of VC games were.
Now, I cant remember the last time I've gone into the WiiShop to have a look around.
Also, I would love to see those 3 Enix games on VC. I'd snap them up pretty quickly.
ok good cauze no VC games on wii=bad things but I hope there will be more and more VC games added on wii....
Wow its not dead just sleeping could have fooled me. I will believe him when some games actually come out on the Wii VC.
@Cheetahman91: That was exactly what I was thinking.
If it isn't dead then why not release more games on a consistent basis?
@nintygaming
If it really is about legal issues, then why did they port Yoshi's Island to the GBA, complete with all the fancy Super FX stuff?
@Mickeymac They may be good, but they are hardly the type of game I'd rush out to buy.
It's a combination of a name I don't recognise and often, a dreadful piece of cover art. I'm not willing to splash out on a game I'll only moderatly enjoy at this stage.
I think in that respect, virtual console is dead - for me at least. Unless they start releasing Parodius games (all of them - we won't mind if we can't read tiny bits of Japanese script in a shooting siescroller), some SNES RPGs and perhaps (although it's almost certainly impossible) Earthbound, I'll have something to buy.
And there must be more thatn 21 N64 games they can offer us.
All talks and no action (yet). I would only believe him if a VC game were to be release (in NA) between now and til the launch of the Wii U, otherwise the guy's just desperate for attention.
@tendoboy1984 (69.): The port is not an emulation like the VC games are. They reprogrammed the game so Mode 7 is not used anymore although it looks similar. Or so i've read.
So like nintygaming pointed out it seems like laziness. Or it's a business affair 'cause they think their investment will not give 'em enough revenue to warrant it.
I'd like Super 7 games to come to the VC as any other person but since i'm not working for Ninty i'm not in the position to say they'll make money with it.
Oh, how I want to believe you, Reggie...
Just put the few remaining Mega Man games on the service and all will be forgiven.
please never refer to the Virtual Console as bite sized chunks again
I would love to see Waku Waku 7, maybe some more Capcom Arcade Classics (form the CPS/2 era), more NEO GEO, some more imports (where is MWIV and Wonder Boy Monster Land VCA?) and more quirky niche titles. Maybe I'm dreaming here, but... It's what I hope for.
@tendoboy1984
They did not use the Super FX chip for the GBA version. The GBA graphics card was powerful enough to do without it. Too bad the sound card on the GBA is inferior to the SNES.
what games NEED to come out on Wii VC? yoshis island is coming already on 3DS (for those of us who can... for now) and Mother 1 + 2 would be better on 3DS when GBA games do eventually come
@Darkrai The Rare N64 games should be released. Goldeneye, Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, Perfect Dark, Banjo-Tooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day... I know it's probably not going to happen, but it would be nice.
Also, still waiting on Monster World IV. That game was never released outside Japan and was also never translated into English, so I'm looking forward to its release sometime in the next few months.
@ Darkrai Well there's the Sega Genesis version of Strider and Super Street Fighter II (with online play) which were already released in Japan's Wii VC as well as a few Neo Geo games like The King of Fighters 97, Art of Fighting 3: The Path of the Warrior, Savage Reign, Ragnagard, and Ninja Masters, not to mention upcoming announced or ESRB rated games that could also be release soon too like Power Instinct (SNES), Mega Man X2 (SNES), Double Dragon II: The Revenge (NES), and Lufia and the Fortress of Doom (SNES).
STOP HATING ON REGGIE!
im going to grow up, have 2 kids w/ him, (nin and tendo) and we will run the world and THEN you shall have your precious games!...
reggie is my 1 and only
Be nice to see wii vc again.... nintendo was selling more wii systems when the vc was coming out with more games it seems...though this may be off topic but skyward sword rocks....
I think he's referring to the WiiU mostly... if they burned out everything good for the Wii VC (for what DOES remain) now, then there wouldn't be much to look forward to on WiiU. I'd rather him just say that, but I digress. I'll just continue to pop in, see mostly phailure, and get pleased when something I want to play finally comes.
So like nintygaming pointed out it seems like laziness.
Laziness doesn't happen in companies like Nintendo. Its not being lazy to focus more on the 3DS and upcoming console instead of their previous console.
i hope this is true, its been really poor and not good for Nintendo. I may have to switch to xbox live
To the people asking for Square games, Neo Geo games, Capcom, etc... that's not Nintendo's fault. You need to ask the respective companies. I saw someone here say Nintendo had better release Mega Man X2 soon, and someone else wants Reggie to release Mortal Kombat. But Nintendo doesn't own these games.
To the person who wants old Disney games, I agree that would be completely awesome. But we should be begging Disney and Capcom for those games - not Nintendo. I bet Disney has no idea that anybody wants those old games, because everybody just directs their frustration towards Nintendo.
i hope for just a short list:
1. Robotrek (please nintendo + SE, i'd pay my 1000 leftover points i have for just this one)
2. earthbound
secret of evermore, illusion of time/gaia, inindo: way of the ninja, lufia 2
i mostly hope for nr 1 and 2
anyway, i think reggie wont lie to us, as nintendo would get alot of angry fans that way, remember: he never said anything like "we will give way more wiiware and VC games" so it may be just a handful of games on the wii's VC
if i should choose only 1 more, it'd be robotrek, that game made me happier than any other SNES game except for secret of mana
I don't think it matters (in the US) if the Wii VC is dead as we'll all be unplugging and packing up our Wii's after we finish playing Zelda anyway. It will be part of the process when packing up the Christmas decorations. All done. Nothing to play here. Move along.
Related - I've seen about a million parents buying 3DS for their kids - tons of sales and specials - and w/ Mario Kart and Marioland who's going to play on their Wii?
Not related - anybody read any reports of barges sinking b/c Kirby has disappeared from all reputable sellers in the US.
Damn, I missed the Xenoblade Chronicles news!?!? Hale-freakin-lulah! Disregard my first paragraph above
Nintendo's marketing on this area, specifically, is very weak... they could launch a bunch of stuff like controllers of some consoles they sell games on Wii, like SNES or N64, addapted for Wii... Often launch new games and deal with some copyright problems like RARE's one... admit, RARE N64 games are awesome.
Lies!
I think there is one major issue being overlooked: Nintendo provides a service that they simply have not supported properly in 3 months. This is absolutely unacceptable in just about any business. On top of that, no obvious explanation. I searched through pages of search results until I found this story. I luv Nintendo, but this is pathetic. Fail.
@Reggie4Life
Hi there! I am actually Reggie Fils-Aime. That's right. This is my personal nintendo life account.
I am a big fan of this website, and i accept your offer to go on a date.
They need more arcade games, or at least ports
Ms. Pac-Man- the NES version, at least
Sonic R- the arcade version would suffice, hopefully
Virtua Fighter- the arcade version
Donkey Kong- is it true that Nintendo doesn't own the hardware?
Mario Bros.- come on, already!
I hope street fight 2 with online comes out before christmas ... That is what i asked for this year....i might have to settle with a kirby game which will be my first kirby ever...which vc kirby would u recomend if that is what i get the chose of getting?...
Er, pretty sure there wasn't an arcade version of Sonic R, WeirdFox: are you thinking of Sonic: The Fighters?
@MasterGraveheart
Quackshot! Darkwing Duck (i.e. MegaMan 5) NES would be pretty epic as well.
Reggie, please: Lufia & the, Body Harvest, TMNT 2: The Arcade Game, Bomberman 64, Star Fox 2, and always, Earthbound.
Lastly: Everyone is aware that MegaMan and MegaMan X Anniversary Collections exist, correct?!
honestly when ff 3 came out i knew there would be no more big games to come out(dk64,yoshi island, and earthbound seem unlikely) the rest of the games we might get will be niche' games (though still hoping for monster world 4) mark my words 3ds vc will end up having more games by the time 3ds' life cycle ends(nes plus handheld systems)
It's only sleeping? WAKE UP!!! You've overslept!
It's only sleeping? WAKE UP!!! You've overslept!
Am i the only one who rembrrs when he said smash bros brawl would release this year and it didnt come out till the next... He also said in a interview in a magzine i have talking about backwsrds cambilty he said they could take a lesson from sony... And this vc sleeping thing....i luv to have a vc game before christmas ... I asked for street fighter 2 with online for christmas...i wish it wake up and soon...
I agree with yellow tails its taking to freaking long like come on already don't they think we waited long enough :/
I hate Reggie and his Japanese bosses for just sitting on all that great software potential for the VC
There are SERIOUSLY good games missing on the VC like: SMW2: Yoshi's Island, Castlevania 64, Bomberman 64, Mega Man X2 & X3, Terranigma and a bunch of SNES games. And don't even get me started with the VC Arcade, which is pretty much dead due to the lack of good games. Where are Metal Slug 3,4 & 5? Blazing Star, Neo Bomberman? Mega Man the Power Fighters? C'mon Nintendo, we are just wating for the VC to arise again.
Virtual Console isn't dead, it's in a coma (I apologize if you made that joke already, I didn't really look at the comments).
I am waiting for the following:
1. Super Base Wars
2. Earthbound
3. Any of the Rare games (Battletoads, Banjo, Super Off-Road, etc)
4. Tiny Toon Adventures (1, 2, & Buster Busts Loose)
5. Any of the Capcom Disney games (especially Ducktales 1 or 2)
6. Double Dragon 2 and 3
7. Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2 (perhaps connectivity with a 3DS remake of R,B,Y,G,&S)
Unrelated, another Eternal Darkenss game would make for a sweet 2012!
Nintendo needs to revamp how many digital titles they release on the Virtual Console. It was one of their biggest selling points and so far, they are intentionally holding back on retro games that will sell well. We all have our wish lists but it's a matter of whether Nintendo will release specific titles that everyone wants to download.
They need to fix this before the Wii U is released so they can stand a chance on the digital content front. There are too many games and believe me, there are way too many people with Wii Points and aren't buying anything since WiiWare isn't exactly setting the world on fire to begin with. Please, Nintendo! Buck up and release more games and equally support ALL the retro systems you said you would support!
I have to be honest, 'cause it's gonna drive me crazy if I don't say anything: I don't know if it's the chosen photo that was used here, or if I've seen other photos of him, but Reggie looks obnoxious to me. He's probably a kind person, I'm sure, but that smirk of his just irks me (imo).
Reggie is a LIER. LIES AND MORE LIES. It is almost February 2012 and VC continues dead!!!!
There is absolutely no "good" reason why they haven't released every game for the NES, SNES, and N64.
Many people don't event want new VC games except for Earthbound and Yoshis Island. Just accept that these games aren't coming.
A better comment from Reggie would be, "It takes alot of time to emulate EVERY game for the VC but don't worry because EVERY NES, SNES, N64, GENESIS, and TG16 will be on the VC no later than summer of this year."
Now it is 15 february and there is no VC game in America, and Reggie is the NOA president. What that means? He is a lier
Where. The. Hell. Is. Megaman X2. WHY NINTENDO? WHYYYY????
What ive found out so far is that all vc games are going to the 3DS so we might as well stop hoping for it on the wii.
It's great to know that the Wii Virtual Console is alive and kicking! Oh wait...
