It's a busy time at Nintendo following the company's first quarter results for this financial year, and it's also just released its annual report for the year just gone that contains lots and lots of numbers.
While many of them won't mean anything to anyone without a head for figures, there are some phenomenal numbers in there for Wii gamers.
To date, Nintendo has sold over 86m Wii consoles worldwide, with a colossal 716m Wii games sold since launch. Of those, the biggest-selling Nintendo titles are of course Wii Sports at 76.76m sales, Wii Play at 28.02m and Wii Sports Resort with 27.68m copies shifted so far. Three other Nintendo games have sold over 20m — Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit and New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
With the console suffering these days it's easy to forget what an incredible success story the Wii has been for Nintendo. For example, GameCube's biggest selling game was Super Smash Bros. Melee with around 7.09m units sold; Wii's equivalent, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, sold 10.27m units and is still only the 8th best-selling game on the console.
Is this an indication of the sorts of games we'll see on Wii U?

Wowza!
To this day, I still don't understand why people say the wii sucks. I mean, it might not have as good graphics as the PS3 or Xbox, but the games are still awesome, once you get past the shovelware.
the wii is a top selling console no one can deny it that. well hopefully these amazing sales can translate over to the wii u, damn wish it had a better name. well we will see the 3ds pick up even more steam later this year. and next year the wii u will be crazy. so much for the demise of nintendo..
I'm glad Nintendo made the Wii. Now when my family sends me off to the old folks home in about 70 years, I'll still be able to play Super Smash Bros. Brawl on their Wii.
@deegan714 u know why they say the wii sucks its because they never took the time out to play it and they always go by youtube video where some noob breaks his tv with the wiimote. they had some awsome games for the wii, and im not talking about the same ones everyone talks about.
After reading this it could be a little bit stupid to think Nintendo's gonna dissapear.because the 3DS hasn't sold that well. It's only matter of time for the rising of 3DS
And about the best selling games... well, it's not surprising but I hope we'll see one thid party game on the list of Wii U.
Hopefully Nintendo doesn't do what they did with the 3DS on the Wii U. When I say that I mean assume that automatically consumers know what it is and that it is the next Wii and not advertise it and hope it just kind of sells itself. Although the 3DS did get some good publicity, it still feels like a good number of people may not realize that this is not the DS per se, but a new generation.
Eat that rivals! Reading that its obvious why they evolved the wii into the wii u rather than completely re-design the former.
low whistle
And the XBOX fanboys keep on saying that the Wii "is the suxx0r".
theyve started putting 3ds ads on saying its next gen and showing sf re mgs and doa etc dont know why they waited this long good to see it now though
Many people say the Wii sucks because of its lack if power, yet I've been through two Xbox 360s, currently have a PS3 that will only get online when it decides it wants to, but have a perfectly working Wii connected to my TV right now. I'll take functionality over "power" any day.
That....Cake....Is....Epic!
the "Wii sucks" is because it isn't as powerful as the PS3 and Nintendo's games don't have blood and gore. >.>
(I think that's what they're thinking anyway)
If Nintendo wanted to, they could support the Wii with new software for another two years. Hardcore gamers might be used to buying a new console every few years, but the new casual audience Nintendo worked so hard to attract isn't used to that. They already have their Wii. Why should they buy another? Why doesn't Nintendo just make new games for the console they have? Those are the types of questions people are going to have. After all, the ultra-casual gamers (parents, grandparents, old maids) who purchased or were given Wii systems probably don't even know about the Wii U yet. All they're going to see is new Wii U games and they won't understand why they don't work on their Wii. The Wii still has life in it. Nintendo should squeeze out every last drop before moving on. They really aren't good at doing that, though.
@Picture looks like the console is sinking into a lake
_@14 True, but Nintendo never had blood and gore- which is good. It makes them stand out.
Well, this cake is no lie.
And boom ! Amazing to see these numbers again after such a llong time.
@17: One reason I'm with Nintendo, I'm not a big fan of blood and gore, lol.
AMAZING CAKE!
Now, if only they would release some more games for those few of us who already have WiiPlay, Sports, WiiFit, and Mario Kart and would like to play something else at some point in the next year and a half before WiiU releases.
Wii has Brawl, DKCR and Galaxy 2, but it´s missing many of the great 3rd party games of PS3 and 360.
that is why you xbox360 and ps3 fanboys hate nintendo long live wii rip.
I also own a PS3 and I don't play it half as much as I play on the Wii, to me the Wii is still the best system to own by far Nintendo has the best first party software...
Note to self: accompany every article with photo of cake.
my wii has new super mario brothers AND no more heroes! does your xbox have mario and no more heroes?
And I'm pretty sure Microwave industry sold many more units than Wiis along this period. Remember that Wii was pretty aimend to mature non-gamers and they were the main consumers and became, all of a sudden, casual gamers, because having a Wii was cool, it was something that looks good near the new TV, etc. This put Wii and most Wii games in a pretty different category than PC/XBoX/PS3. In fact, Sony, MS and PC gaming industry never considered Nintendo as a direct rival, it happens the same in the other direction. Problem is that after 6 or 7 years, these non gamers are now gamers or still casuals, and they are moving pretty fast for other handhelds (smartphones, pads, etc) and/or PS3 (just check 2011 sales for PS3 compared with Wii). Nintendo will hardly do any more fishing in that famous "blue ocean".
over 86M, yes but but be precise it;s sold 87.57M, DS as sold 147.86M and 3DS 4.32M, Later this year, Nintendo will hit milestones with their systems. Well deserved.
Well deserved indeed.
Go Nintendo!
@deegan714
I totally agree with this. I have said it once and I will say many times. I would way rather have a Wii than any of the others, because if all of you havent noticed I would have to say that at least 80% of the games on those consoles are shooters. Wow what variety, whereas the Wii is all about variety.
Huge numbers, but it seems like it's a Nintendo box, since not much 3rd games sell on it. Kinda sad.
What I really want to know is - What is the wiimote part of the cake made of, and is it also edible?
The Wii's the best Nintendo console ever. The graphics aren't so bad, but it is a shame that Nintendo chose to make the Wii as powerful as an Xbox instead of an Xbox 360. That's cost us a lot of great third party games and replaced them with shovelware.
@heebeegeebee It looks like marzipan. Marzipan is edible.
Nice cake!
Nice to see this numbers I only hope that they won't disappoint us with Wii U game titles quantity as they did with the Wii
Never wanted to eat a controller more in my life! I'm going to go see how my Wiimote tastes...
That's one awesome cake!! I wonder what the controller tastes like? lol.
Just as the 3DS price cut is PROOF that Nintendo is destined to failure, these figures show... uh... yeah. The anti-Nintendo crowd can be pretty dumb sometimes.
A picture of a cake next to each article would likely boost this website's traffic to numbers far beyond those sales...
To the Xbox-360 fanboys/ Wii-haters, I've got three things to say to you:
#1 - RROD
#2 - Pay-to-Play
#3 - HD is overrated
PS3 is great for Blu-Ray and Little Big Planet, but where's all the games with big-nosed, mustached plumbers in overalls, who jump on floating platforms and smash baddies with their feet? LOL!

Don't think they weren't jealous of all the profit Nintendo made. They may have talked it down and have hidden it behind some sarcastic comments. But you can clearly see that Sony and Microsoft have their own motion controllers now...
Over the time the Wii might have appealed less and less to "hardcore" gamers but it clearly was in competition with the other companies. I mean don't you think they would have preferred to have everyone that bought a Wii as one of their own costumers ?
It's just a shame they're letting it die a slow and agonising death.
They should be using the fortune they've made to buy more development teams for making AAA 2nd party games, but I get the feeling they're just keeping it. :/
They've realised now they can just coast by on sales of the Wii series and a couple of Mario games, and that worries me.
I was in my local GAME retailer discussing games with the guy who works there & he told me that the wii is still their best selling console!
That's a yummy looking cake! I'd like to have THAT as my birthday cake!
Since Wii Sports was included with system it's no surprise that it sold the most. Nice cake by the way!
