On 12th August Nintendo of America officially drops the price of 3DS to $169.99, and is compensating anyone who bought the machine at its earlier, higher price with 20 free Virtual Games from the eShop. What if there was a way to get both — the cheaper console and free games? Could you have your cake and eat it?
The answer is "yes" if your local Walmart is one of many stores across North America already selling the console at its discounted price. The Cheap Ass Gamer forums is filled with happy shoppers with till receipts showing their consoles bought at the lower price.
These consoles are also eligible for the Ambassador program and free eShop games if connected to the eShop before midnight tomorrow, 11th August.
If you try your local Walmart or other stores and have success nabbing your machine for cheap, let us know.

I wondered if anyone would do this. I don't mind the price drop, but this is just not cool.
doesnt seem fair to early adoptors... but hey at least more people will buy a 3DS. that is good news to me.
Well so much for that reward to loyal Nintendo gamers. LMAO Back to square one.
Good on them if they can get both.
That's, well slightly unfair on me and a few other who bought on launch or before...
How amusing.
they should be took out back and shot NOT dont care just waiting for my free stuff★
It may seem kind of silly but one of my best friends, when he heard of the Ambassador Scheme, he went out and bought one right away. I told him to wait for the 12 but he wouldn't listen . . . Idiot. And he did this because he wanted Legend of Zelda
This sucks...
In germany several stores offer 3DS systems for the new price since it's been announced.
There was even a bargain for 155 euros....
I don't see how this is unfair....it's basically just Walmart being smart and selling it at the discount price when a lot of people apparently know about the ambassador program. I can't be mad regardless, as I'm not in the US.....
Has Nintendo said when they'll announce the names of all 20 games yet.
well. beeing an mabassador, i find it not cool. but again, if i saw that deal and didnt have a 3ds yet, i would have jump on it... and probably ended up breaking it into pieces.
nah, seriosuly i would have bought it right away and get my ambassador for real cheap.
so, its good news if it make people buy more 3ds. long live to nintendo, more streetpasses occasions !
Oh well. $80 wasted. but over $100 gained from free games!
I can confirm this is true. I just bought mine yesterday with Pac-Man and Galaga. I have to admit, after actually picking it up, I would've paid the extra for it. My apologies to the loyal fans who paid full price!
This defeats the purpose of the Ambassador Program...
I hope Nintendo secretly changed the "before 12th" to "before 8th" :3
This is unfair to us early adopters, the free games was supposed to compensate for early adopters paying a higher price so its unfair if people get the 3DS at a lower price and the free games.
MUST...GET...TO WALMART!!!
I checked at two Wal-Marts yesterday, and they were still for $250.
I don't think this rumor is true then.
If it's not at all Wal-Marts then, perhaps it was an accident, or maybe Nintendo stomped on 'em for it? Any stores selling them at the lower price in advance completely ruins their efforts at an apology to early adopters... i know i'd be ticked if i were going through that much trouble just to have someone undermining everything I was trying to do. :/
To those people complaining, it's not unfair - it's capitalism. You bought when the price was right for you, so stop complaining about people who waited being able to get it cheaper!
Target stores are doing it now apparently.
As an Ambassador who got it on launch day, I could go on a profanity-laced tirade right now, but what good would it do (except get me banned). It speaks for itself, because this is how it treats people, both customers, as well as employees worked to death for peanuts and no benefits. Just one thing to say... BOYCOTT WAL-MART! Make this a PR nightmare for them! Call or Email to complain... Anything to give them some pain or take some of their profits. They just said "eff you" to Ambassadors who paid full price, SOME FROM THEIR STORE! Now, what are YOU going to do in regards to this blood-suckin leech?
Hmm...there's a Walmart close by where I live. Maybe I could...wait, I have a 3DS! WHAT AM I THINKING?!
@Betelgeuse
I'm not going to do anything. lol. (I'm not a big fan of Wallyworld in the first place, and rarely shop there), but as many others have pointed out, this IS a capitalistic country.
I think it's brilliant that some people are able to get both. It just shows how to be a good shopper. If I were to get a 3DS, it'd be right now (but I'm not). Think of it as being like one of those coupon shoppers that holds out till they can get the thing for nearly free. Good Job!!!
Besides, I would think Wal-Mart would want to sell them at normal price for as long as they could, because as soon as they start selling them at the discount price before Nintendo actually sell it to them at that price, they'll be making a considerable loss on each console. But I guess maybe they wanted to make sure people bought it from them, and hopefully in doing so would earn enough to make up for what they were losing.
This is unfair...but whatever. Loyals and non-loyals are much more clearer now.
I might just have to wander over to Walmart tonight...
@NetrackSteven64 No, what's unfair is how you think that those who didn't buy the 3DS until now are not loyal to Nintendo. How much money a person limited to to buy a game has nothing to do with their loyalty to Nintendo.
@Dragon: I dunno why Ninty would stomp them. If anything, this is good because it promotes sales until the end of tomorrow
I doubt they do this in Mexico. The 3ds is at 5000 pesos (more or less 420 dls). But there are tiny stores who sells it at the right prices. I´ll wait for red 3ds.
Who cares if it's unfair just enjoy the 20 free games that you're getting.
I think Nintendo should be notified of this nonsense. I don't regret paying $250 for my system, though. I got it early. And I was 100% sure I was getting 20 free games.
People that buy it on a discount are just lucky. It would be funny if Nintendo secretly changed it to before the 8th and not the 12th so then it would be more fair.
@RYBlast I totally agree. We paid to get our system early. If we wanted it on a price drop that bad, and we were gonna get mad about it later on then we could have waited.
@Kevin All games and dates for the Ambassador Program were already announced. If you have a 3DS, you can check your notifications. Or just find the article for it on NL.
Not a problem. I just want the system to sell so I can get a good selection of games to choose from (and maybe some actual StreetPass hits...).
I just went to my local Wally World in a very rural community. Even here $169 is the prevalent price. No ones bought one yet because, like I said, its a rural town so you really have to drive a long way to get there.
The funny thing is that Wal-mart is paying for the early price drop.
@38
it's true, ign confirmed it with reggie this morning. anyone selling the system at a cheaper price before august 12th is selling it at their own expense, not nintendo's. i bought mine yesterday for a sweet $169 at my wal-mart, no hiccups or issues at all. and now i am ambassador status as well! which i do feel kinda bad about, but it's coming out of wal-mart's pocket! so i don't feel toooo bad.
Thanks Nintendo life! I just picked mine up at Target for the reduced price. You are now my favorite web site!
Im going to get mine right now! So excited! Thanks Nintendo Life!
I got mine at Walmart yesterday. I already linked my eShop and Club Nintendo accounts too so I am officially an Ambassador now.
I just called my Walmart, and this is legit. On my way to Walmart tomorrow.
If Walmart wants to do it, it's their choice. All those complaining are poor shoppers to begin with. Also, here in Canada stores have to update their prices before a certain period during the week which happens to be before August 12th, which gives them no choice to put the mark at 169.99 before that time. It's the law.
So all the complainers need to learn to be smarter shoppers.
EDIT : To be clear, stores put out new panflets and adverts on Wednesdays, it needs to be printed before that. Which means that once it's out on Wednesdays, the prices listed are what they should be and it's the law that the store must honor that price. So since August 12 is friday, it's after the adverts will be out, therefore, they have no choice to sell it at the price advertised as the law requires them to do it.
I understand the folks getting bent outta shape about this, but the fact of the matter is, I don't see the majority of the general population knowing about this deal. Besides, if the 20 free games AND a price drop of the 3DS get people that were on the fence to buy the 3DS, that can only be good for the future of the 3DS, right?
That means, future games will be released for it which is good for all of us who already own it. Please stop being so salty towards the select few that will be able to get 20 free games AND a cheaper 3DS and encourage your fellow gamers to jump in on this limited time offer.
And here I thought people wanted a "flame red" 3DS...
I don't really mind if Wal-Mart (and Target) is selling the system cheaper, I didn't pay full price for mine even though I bought it on the first day.
I'm going to walmart TONIGHT to get mine! Thanks for the info!
Wal-Mart is lame. Don't do it guise.
ssshhhhh!!!!!! dont tell anybody!
My local Target dropped the price yesterday and I picked one up. First system I have ever bought for myself.
Target is also doing the same.

I am now an official 3DS owner as well as an ambassador!
My brother took advantage of this yesterday. I'm just glad that I now have someone with whom to StreetPass every day.
In for one and a proud ambassador. And I had no plans to buy a 3DS anytime soon, so this was a good move for Nintendo/Walmart.
I'm just happy that more people are buying the 3DS. It really is a great system and I want to see it have a tremendous amount of support. I downloaded Super Mario Land last night. I had an original Gameboy Pocket but never got the opportunity to play this game as a kid. It's awesome getting the chance to play a piece of Mario history I missed out on.
Got mines today at target for $169.99, just in time for those free 20 games. Glad I waited
@PSWii60Gamer Same, except I went to Walmart.
WOW this sucks, I felt like it was exclusive but not anymore.... Thanks a lot walmart... you suck.
Funny stuff being written on here by walmart, they are like tesco's in this country. Asda's here in the UK are owned by the Walmart people, I still reckon Nintendo did a deal with them....
