The other day it seemed 3D movies were coming to Netflix 3DS, owing to this section of the press release:
The new Netflix application for Nintendo 3DS displays movies and TV episodes in 2D on the system’s upper screen. Users will soon have access to an additional library of select movies that can be viewed in 3D without the need for special glasses.
As it turns out, this wasn't referring to Netflix but instead the Nintendo Video application that's due to release later this summer:
The press release announcing the new Netflix service for Nintendo 3DS also references the system's upcoming short-form video service. Nintendo 3DS owners soon will be able to enjoy free, specially selected video content that includes 3D movie trailers, comedy clips and music videos.
As you were.

I'd much rather have Netflix in 2D than Nintendo Video.
but when is nintendo video coming
Looks like Iwata has something to explane...
They better offer, the new Yu-Gi-OH movie on Nintendo Video. Too bad they won't have 3D movies on instant, netflix and nintendo will benefit nicely.
I have no idea what Neftlix is and I do not care, because the only true way to watch movies is from Film, Beta or VHS.
lot better watching in 3d waiting for 20th to see what new vids we get
Not that this affects me in any way, but curse ambiguous press statements! Meanwhile, Nintendo Video sounds absolutely fantastic! (sarcasm)
Man this is FAIL in SOOOO MANY levels. First of all why have the Netflix logo in 3D if you won't have 3D movies? 2nd, IWATA! Why must you deprive us of both 3Dmovies AND 3D Youtube on the go, you do have some explaining to do. You are giving Japan 3D television but we get 2D movies for the time being. What the heck is going on?? Lately they've been disappointing me in different ways this summer.
america got a bad deal u have to pay 4 nrtflix and no 3d movies och
I can't believe I'm reading this right now... Nintendo, shame on you.
darn i was hoping it would be in 3d but its is still fine
Not really Nintendo's fault, since it's Netflix that has to make the videos available in 3D.on their server. But I don't really care for 3D anyways, that is not what I bought the 3DS for. It's just a feature that I can utilize if I would like to.
Why are people blaming Nintendo? Or better yet, why am I surprised that people are blaming Nintendo?
Between this and the recent price hike for Netflix service, it doesn't seem that Netflix are looking to please many. I won't even be trying this service given that the possibility of 3D was it's only selling point on this platform for me and surely many others.
@moosa People are blaming Nintendo because they gave us misleading information.
Speaking of 3D movies, didn't Iwata imply in 2010 that they would be available for purchase on the 3DS? Maybe I misunderstood, but I just seem to remember him citing movies that would be coming to it (not long after mentioning the Saint's Row vaporware)....
I love Nintendo's games, but it astounds me how they are unable to keep up with current trends in media services. If the system had launched with 3D movie capabilities BEFORE phones with 3D started coming out, they might have had better sales after launch week.
I guess it's understandable since they are primarily a gaming company (and ALL of their competition is multimedia), but I'm starting to think they need to partner with another company to help with their online and multimedia services.
how is it misleading when netflix is the one doing this? not a big deal anyway i don't even use netflix
I layed in bed last night and watched "The Fly" with Netflix on my 3DS. T'was a good time.
Well, I don't have a Netflix account yet, so this isn't that saddening to me.
uhm what?
Cmon...2010...."How to train your dragon" great movie...was looking forward to see it 3D on my portable.
Well it's okay not a Netflix person anyway.
Oh great so you get Netflix and Nintendo Video! So not fair
3D movies are overrated.
People are blaming Nintendo because they advertised that it would stream in 3D.
Nintendo, you can't hold out forever. The world is no longer child appropriate. This sheltered existence is only doing you harm. You must give us Youtube.
I just want to be able to view anime on my 3ds. Is that really too much to ask Nintendo? Really? I really don't want to have to carry around an iPad or PS Vita just for the sake of videos. Maybe I should just hold out to the inevitable 3ds XL
Nintendo's tripping in their own shoelaces.
@expa0
Wow retro video addict. I don't think you can get new releases on any of those, except maybe film. I also don't think you can get better quality than 280i on those. Just saying. I am also sad that Nintendo of America has been holding back on us. We need a new marketing division that will give the games we want, the service we want, and the Nintendo that we have come to love but lost one day on a cold, rainy, foggy day.
Oh well, count me out then. 3D was my NetFlix selling point. Call me crazy, but I'd actually like to USE the 3D aspect of my 3DS. Maybe that's just me though.
@Markystal you can via Netflix... I was just watching Trigun and trouble witches on my 3DS the other day. Also it sucks that there wont be 3D movies on my 3DS. it woulda been so cool...
@cerealkiller062 Actually I remember reading somewhere that Beta and Laserdisc was/is the best medium for viewing movies and films, they just never caught on because of the price and availability. I also heard the same about record (vinyl) and 8 tracks being the best medium for audio. Go figure. Nintendo lies quite frequently. I guess we can blame cultural and language interpretation?
Netflix sucks when it comes to 3D. You can't even rent 3D blurays from them.
oh well, so long as there are 3d movies. and summer is a perfect time to watch 3d movies
Netflilx in Canada is a joke. I tried their trial version and shut it down after a couple of weeks. Very poor selection of many genres.
As MegatronD mentioned, had 3D movies been offered, I'd seriously consider it but, no need to now; Netflix is a definite no go for THIS consumer.
Damn. Oh well, better than nothing
well I don't live in the states to begin with so Netflix doesn't even work for me... Stall it's a shame..
I'm not buyin this story. Nintendo said "Users will soon have access to an additional library of select movies that can be viewed in 3D without the need for special glasses." The problem with that referencing the video app? Nintendo said that movies were not coming to the app. I think this is nintendo trying to cover their butts after accidentally announcing 3D movies are coming to Netflix. My hopes are still high
what a disappointment. this wasn't an ambiguous statement I don't think, someone was simply wrong. or, as @Catcher suggested, someone jumped the gun. They clearly said 3D movies, not 3D snipits of trailers and music videos. Netflix hasn't actually denied anything have they?
I was quite excited to see a 3D Movie on the 3DS, but for some reason I really don't mind if all we get is 2D or not. Unless I'm wearing 3D Glasses in a movie theater, I don't think my eyes can stand the 3D Effect being on for a couple hours.
I could really care less about this news. It kind of stinks, but yeah I have been a Netflix member for a long time, and I use it a lot, so I am happy with 2D.
"Certainly, Netflix delivers a huge menu of 2-D programming, but 3-D programming is also on the way."
Reggie Fils-Aime, GDC 2011
So... I could see a 3D movie trailer on the 3DS, but if same said movie comes to Netflix later on, I can't watch same said movie in 3D? Um... I remember hearing watching movies in 3D, either I need to get the wax outta my ears (which does need to be done anyway) or I heard correctly. Reggie, you got more 'splaining to do...
Didn't Netflix say they had not heard of any plans to stream 3D content into the 3DS from Nintendo? I think it's not that Nintendo doesn't want it to happen, it's likely Netflix just doesn't have any plans to stream 3D content period. Also, it's good to hear the free 3D video services Japan gets is going to happen in other places.
Ignorance never ceases to amaze me
I don't really mind, but why the hell would they say it was possible if they weren't completely sure?
@Tri4ceHolder: There's a difference between "possible" and "definitely going to happen". The difference is "possible" has a chance of not happening
bah don't care, I don't like 3D movies much, 3D gaming that's a bit different.
Who freakin' cares?!?!?!?!? IT'S A PORTABLE NETFLIX ON THE GO! Stop whining and give me cake.
drops popcorn in shock
Just one more reason for me not to get a 3DS right now.
Meh, 3d hurts my eyes and makes me nauseous anyway.
Sucks as usual. The selection on Netflix is zlready hit-or-miss anyway. 3D would have been nice, but for the meantime, it is nice sometimes to watch content in bed if I want.
That would be a bad thing for the 3DS and its marketing in my opinion.
But it may have something to do with "take a break every 30 minutes when using 3D". For a three hour movie this would mean making 5 breaks. They could even stream 2D commercials during that time and make the service free.
Of course getting 3D movies on a 3D capable system would be asking too much. I am loving this purchase more and more as the months go by.
Time to start my subscription then...
I am really thanked that we have a Netflix and a 3DS. Thankyou Nintendo for all of your hard work. Thanx!
