Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light is shaping up to be another quality entry in the famed RPG series, with its unique graphical style and developer heritage. Its battle system could take a bit of getting used to though, which is why publisher Square Enix has put together a brief video showing you how to get the most out of the upcoming game.
Showing combo attacks, defensive spells and, crucially, slime, we'll leave you to make up your mind if this looks like a deep and rewarding battle system or an unnecessary deviation from a classic template.

Awesome! It looks like the battle system from the older games (pre-ATB), but more "modern".
Wow! That looked so great! This game's gonna be so awesome! Can't wait!
I don't know wether to get this game or not. That looks like a great battle system but everything else in the game looks too basic for me.
Looks like a similar battle system to the one in Xenosaga, except placement isn't as important and there are no giant robots. Still really looking forward to it, though.
Love that classic battle music!
meh i can't get over the horrible chibi graphic's enough to make me want to gouge out my eyes
that looks interesting :3 i like it.
@#6 same here. and the battle system doesn't look very interesting to me, personally, so I wll definitely be skipping this one.
/my wallet rejoiceth
Hmm, very good. I've already pre-ordered this. I'm hoping, though, that you can turn off the superfluous starting animation where they introduce the monsters. I'll be seeing what's on screen anyway. Kind of redundant.
Does this mean no MP, like FFXIII? I like...
The music is awesome also!
This looks fifty bajillion times better than Dragon Quest 9. Of course, that's not saying much, but still.
The graphics are a turn off for me and I too think the gameplay is much too basic for me... that and I just don't have the time these days for RPGs, so I'm much more discerning nowadays. Take me back about 12 years and I'd be all over this otherwise.
Wow, that looks fabulous, glad I preordered it
@pixelman agreed
looks awesome can't wait =)
4 girls in that pic? You'd think they would have stuck a guy in there for balance.
Im sure it will be a great game, but for now, Im thinking DQ9 is more my style.
@pixelman i disagree with you dq9 is one of the best jrpgs this year and it got a 87 on metacritic so you have no idea what you are talking about
@Eggmiester I think he was being contentious for the sake of being contentious
@6 - Same here. Actually, it's not the chibi-ness, but the hideous 3D graphics. Really, if this were 2D and chibi-cute, I could do it, but I hate hate hate the graphics of the redone FF's and this. I refuse to stare at this ugly garbage for dozens of hours.
I think this game looks pretty good and I will probably pick it up. It is going to be hard for me to find the time to play it though since I've been busy playing Etrian Odyssey III.
Prosody's got me figured out!
Honestly though, I do own DQ and I find it much too repetitive, grindy, and basic for my tastes (also, the shoddy world map framerate was a major turnoff for me). From my experience the FF games have had much more interesting battle mechanics. I love this new gold globe system, and the art style is beautiful.
Bring on October 5th!
They're bringing back limited item carrying capacity? But I loves me some good old Final Fantasy infinite pockets!
Not really THAT big a deal, but a disappointment nonetheless. I really do prefer being able to carry as much crap around as I like, simply 'cause I don't wanna worry about it. A packrat is me!
@pixelman: In other words, your tastes do not match Dragon Quest very well. Some people absolutely LOVE the old-school flavor of the series, and that includes repetative grindiness. Mmm...grindiness...
Oh yeah I can totally understand that and I see the appeal. Ive enjoyed some grindy games myself. It's just too basic for me. There's also not much of a story, so I don't feel any real drive to grind for dozens of hours.
FF looks perfect for me. It's got a streamlined old school battle system with an interesting twist, and a seemingly more focused story with some actual character development.
This just looks like a rehash of Final Fantasy 3 with an odd, distasteful graphical style. Sure the battle system is different, but it reminds me of card game. And there are WAY too many card game video games in existance. Count me out.
Man I'm loving that battle music. The battle camera views look awesome too. Its a shame there are literally 20 games I want to get right now with zero cash! I'll have to wait longer for this one but it looks promising, like a lost classic FF game, kinda like how Mega Man 9 seemed.
I want this game so bad!!
