With all the excitement at E3 this year surrounding the new Super Mario games and Team Ninja’s take on Metroid it would be easy to forget about Shigsy’s plans for Pikmin 3. Could it be that the project has been forgotten about?
Thankfully the good fellows over at Kotaku were able to get a bit of one on one time with the famed producer yesterday at E3 to get the latest gossip. Here’s what he had to say:
I'm sorry, Unfortunately we haven't been able to expand the team size very much, because we've been working on so many different games that we've shown off at the show. So the team is working very hard, but it's a bit of a small team.
When asked if the team were working on a full new game Miyamoto-san said:
My basic idea is that the sense of the depth of the game and the simplicity of the control will all be there."
So there you have it folks, we might not see Pikmin 3 until E3 2010 but you can bet it will surely be worth the wait. Until then why not enjoy the New Play Control! releases of Pikmin and Pikmin 2? It’s the closest you’re going to get to all new Pikmin action for a while it seems.

First! At least we know for sure that something is being worked on, even if it is (sadly) slowly...
Good news.
That's good news,for me and a certain chicken we know.
NPCs are the culprit here, people. Gather the pitchforks.
I'd rather see a new Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid anyway...
I am sadend by the fact that it seems this game is so far away from release.
Surely Little King's Story is the closest you'll get to new Pikmin? In fact, one might even say it's miles BETTER than Pikmin.
Discuss.
A small team, huh? Those five people working on NPC probably could have helped.
As long as it's coming, I'm happy. I'm willing to wait as long as it takes for another great Pikmin game (they've both been excellent so far); I was just afraid it had been forgotten about.
This is good news.
Good thing it's still in the making. And yes, I might get New Play Control! Pikimin 2. Anyone think that it may be shown at the Tokyo Game Show?
I don't mind waiting for Pikmin 3, as long as I know there's a light at the end of the tunnel. It would've crushed me if they'd canned it.
I'd still rather them bring Pikmin to the DS. Might not have taken as long to develop. Oh well. Plenty of other great games to keep us busy.
"Until then why not enjoy the New Play Control! releases of Pikmin and Pikmin 2?"
Because we STILL don't have so much as a RELEASE DATE for NPC Pikmin 2 in North America! COME ON, NINTENDO! Everybody in the world has that game EXCEPT us, even Australia!
I need to get those New Play Control Pikmins, I still have yet to try them out, it's always a series I've wanted, but by the time I get around to buying them, something bigger and shinier and more Marioer seems to rear it's head lol
@Prosody
Even though I am really anxious to play Pikmin 3, I think I'm way more excited about Little King's Story! I think Little King's Story will be more than enough to fill the void left by Pikmin 3's absence this year!
Actually, I would have loved a Pikmin DS too, but this has my interest
Nintendo has been honest this year. People start yelling at them, asking them why there's no Zelda or Pikmin this year, so they tell them. "We're still working on it". Fair enough, I say. I'd rather wait to get a quality game. Take your time, Nintendo. Make it a masterpiece.
Maybe they'll pull a Metroid Prime Trilogy and release them all in one package.
@Corbie: Well, in my ideal scenario, both a fully-fledged, built-from-the-ground up new console Pikmin and a seperate DS entry would be on the way. I'd really love to see what clever and crazy things the developers would think of for both Nintendo platforms, because the series could really translate brilliantly to both of their current systems. But I've been waiting five long years for a sequel and the original games didn't quite garner the sales they rightfully deserved, so I'm not going to let myself get too greedy. And Little King's Story looks like it'll fill the Pikmin-shaped void in my heart nicely for a while, if it ever stops getting pushed back.
I like the Pikmin franchise, but I'm not good at it , I have both Pikmin GC versions unfinished (not planning to get the NPC, I like the original controls), so there's plenty to do before Pikmin 3, I can wait.
We don't care about Pikimin guys. What about F-ZERO?
I felt Pikmin was fine on it's own so I'm not fussed about 2 let alone a 3rd one.
What do people expect from a new Pikmin game that hasn't already been done (serious question for the fans)?
I actually feel the same way as Sean, but I own Pikmin 2 as the definative version. I'm not too fussed about 3, unless it turns out to be mind blowing
@Radio Shadow. F-ZERO? Pfft...
The fact that it still exists and that there's an idea of it's release date is enough to make me happy. I'm too busy anticipating Metroid: Other M and Mario Galaxy 2 anyway.
Play Control Pikmin is HORRIBLE! the Wii controllers are God Awful! It doesn't even compare to the great Game Cube controllers! Waht the hell are you people at Nintendo thinking?! My girlfriend bought me the Play Control Pikmin 1 when it came out because she knows I am a rabid Pikmin fan and I was disgusted at how bad it was! Good thing I didn't buy a Wii. Lucky she had one to play it on. If there are any smart people in Nintendo left, make a new controller or allow the old school controller to be used for Pikmin 3!!!!
Not to be annoyingly truthful, but isn't that the excuse Reggie gave last year immediately after the E3 conference?
2 years is enough to come up with something, or not even that. We lived with nothing more than Concept Art for the new Zelda for a year, why not just make another picture to say something's getting done rather than using the same excuse over and over again?
