Two isn't always better than one

When approaching Jaleco's Rival Turf! (known as Rushing Beat in Japan), it's important to understand...

Out now!
Following on from the news that we could be getting more NES and SNES games this week, Nintendo has now added three classics to its Switch Online service. The titles joining the service on this occasion include Congo's Caper (Data East, 1993) and Rival Turf! (Jaleco, 1992) for Super Nintendo, along with Pinball (Nintendo, 1983) for NES.
News Super Castlevania IV and Rival Turf Join the MSU1 Audio Club
“Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make!”
It looks like Conn and Kurrono Kei aren't giving the old MSU1 audio enhancement trick a rest; this allows you to add CD-quality soundtracks to retro games. Released during the last week was one of the most fan-requested patches (Super Castlevania IV) and a surprise release for...

Rival Turf! Hair cuts! BINGO!
The Nintendo Download continues its merry path this week with releases on all formats, though only one genuinely new game in the form of DSiWare's pirate puzzler Ikibago. Read on and see what's in store this week. Virtual Console: Rival Turf! (Jaleco, Super NES, 800pts) — A relic from the days when scrolling beat 'em...

Hudson and Capcom serve up some more games
Japan maintains a small lead on the rest of the world next month, by both catching up on two titles that were already released in Europe, and releasing three new games which everybody else will also likely see. There's nothing really surprising here this time! The games Japan will be getting next month are:...
Nintendo Download 8th October 2010 (Europe)
Three for DSiWare, one each on WiiWare and VC
In an unexpected turn of events, the press release for this week's European Nintendo Download turned up early, but who's complaining? Well, anyone hoping to grapple with Shantae: Risky's Revenge and Cave Story, but at least next week sees the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1, so there's a...

Y'know, the fact that this beat'em up was done by Jaleco (who made Hoops and Super Earth Defense Force), and was released early in the SNES console's lifespan has me real interested.
I am a sucker for beat em ups. I will get this for sure!
I am as well JJ, but this game looks seriously flawed. The computer is getting a lot of hits in with only one pawn character on screen. Looks a bit slow too. I'll wait to hear some hands-on feedback before I judge it too harshly
So...what's the story like? Did the always present evil gang steal all of the city's animations?
There's an M. Bison lookalike in this game.
So we are getting more Jaleco games? Awesome
Looks like a Final Fight knockoff. And a mediocre one at that.
Definitely a Final Fight clone, but I don't think it's looks too shabby for what it is. Probably a fun game to play on a rainy afternoon. Besides, I pretty much welcome any and all games to Virtual Console these days! Whatever we can possibly get...
Brawl Brothers is much better. Will probably get this because I love the genre, but it isn't really that good.
Heh, Nintendo Power put this as one of the worst video game covers in history of vid games, but it's not that bad (considering others ive seen)
Never played this one, but I did play Jaleco's Brawl Brothers which looks a lot like this one actually. That one wasn't bad, but I think I'd pick up the cartridge of Rival Turf before downloading it : ), either way cool to see some Jaleco games on VC.
Wow, that animation is terrible!
You'd think that Police Street would be safer...
Thats so a rip-off from M. Bison.
@Bass - wow, I'm not the only one that sees the close resemblance.
I noticed in the screenshots that you can change the color of your Oozie Nelson's outfit (in most of them it's red, while in a few it's blue). How do you do that, I wonder?
Ya, I remember that, lol.
my friend had this as a kid. I thought it was awesome at the time because it was the only Beat em Up I'd ever played up to that point in time. Now it doesn't look so good I love how the map screen shows levels like Los Angeles as being located in Alaska!
Is it just me, or does that character in the red jacket from the Japanese box art look so much like Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury?
@Bass Looks like a ripoff of both M. Bison and Terry Bogard
@17 No, they're not in Alaska, but they're certainly well into Canada judging from that map that looks like it was drawn from memory by a second grader.
I used to really like this game. Mostly because there was a code so you could change every characters name in the game. And because it had a hidden area which Final Fight didn't.
