3D platformers sell much less than 2D ones, meaning people prefer the tradition and simplicity of 2D platformers.
Western RPG's sell much more than JRPG's, meaning people prefer the changes that Western RPG's bring.
So which is it? Do people prefer tradition or change?
Stop trying to add apples and oranges, you ought to know that they just don't add up correctly together
Well what makes Western RPG's more popular than JRPG's? Is it the more realistic presentation? The fact that a Western developer made it?
WRPGs are almost a completely different type of game. And they have, you know, western style stories with western style characters. Japanese RPGs are very... Japanese.
It's the same reason cheezburgerz are more popular in the US than sushi ffs! =P
Very few people play Turn-based RPGs for their gameplay. They usually play them for their production valies and especially the story. Lately it's been difficult for JRPG developers to make a good story, made worse by the fact that the standards of video game stories have become higher. People are also wanting more from the gameplay, in part of the fact that the stories aren't as good as they used to be. Thus explains why traditional games are losing favor while more gameplay-focused games like Monster Hunter are gaming dominance.

JRPGs were never that popular in the West until a little game from Japan, called Final Fantasy VII came along in 1997. It's a miracle that it even found a ever-growing base here in the West I'd say.
Ok let me get this straight: Final Fantasy 7 came around and started a rise in popularity in RPG's, but then the Western RPG started to grow and outpaced the JRPG. So now the JRPG market (aside from Square Enix's games) is back to being a niche, and the Western RPG dominates.
So in a way the RPG market in America is like the shooter market in Japan...
Is that right?
I'd say that the old Ultima and Elder Scrolls series (Western RPGs) were almost infinitely more popular and known amosngst Western gamers than a game like, let's say...Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest during the NES and SNES periods...
Final Fantasy VII, due to it's strong marketing by Sony introduced the 'main audience' in the West to another form of RPG...the JRPG!
The few hardcore gamers were of course already familiar with games like Secret Of Mana, Final Fantasy IV and Dragon Quest...
Success also has a downside due to expectations and limitations...but I think that JRPGs in general deserve a lot of more respect from the Western audience, but that's just my opinion...

Actually, story-based games are far more common these days than gameplay focused ones. Uncharted, God of War, Halo, Gears of War, etc. all focus very heavily on story and presentation.
And if people want story-based games, then Mario, Sonic, etc. would be long gone.

Skyward Sword and toon link are an expection. Other than those the zelda series is very western or Medieval.

The thing about Japanese stories is a lot of it is the same. Something was sealed ages before and its weakening and you must gather the 7 fragments of something to awaken your bloodline from the ancient lost tribe that was said to be forgotten and then the seal monster turns out was your brother whom prior to the game his parents were killed and he put their souls in his sword which now power him but he became corrupt because of an Army that was creating an experimental alien based on parts that fell from the sky 100 years ago and every 100 years that same thing passes by and unseals the demon whom created a special race of people that are more powerful but died off. Then you brake into 7 pieces and get scattered over the world.

He was saying why JRPG's aren't really popular in the west due to their very Japanese presentation and character designs. Then I mentioned Zelda, which has very Japanese-style characters yet is popular worldwide.

So explain why the Zelda series hasn't died out due to repetition, yet most other RPG/adventure games have.
Lately it's been difficult for JRPG developers to make a good story, made worse by the fact that the standards of video game stories have become higher.
the solution is to either get better writers or consistently follow K.I.S.S.
actually Final Fantasy still sells so the quality of story has nothing to do with sales clearly.

First off, congratz for contridicting yourself. Second of all, even if they have more emphasis on the story, those games you listed are still action games with equal or greater emphasis on gameplay, which is kind of what I'm talking about. Also note that I'm talking about the decline of JRPGs worldwide, including in Japan, where even there traditional RPGs are losing favor.

Final Fantasy sold well on the promise of a good story, and on its unique and more involved gameplay.
