Topic: Wii 480p cable - how much difference does it make?

I just read this morning that nintendo released (a long time ago) different wii component cables that enhance the wii's graphics and make games look more clear when you use their new more advanced plugs instead of the standard plugs. Does anyone have these new plugs? How much difference does it make in contrast with the standard plugs.

Here is a picture of the standard plug wii's come with:

And here is the apparently superior cables that i'm asking about:

It made an incredible improvement in sharpness on my SDTV (keeping the Wii in 480i mode since that's all my old CRT TV supports). I've heard that the improvement is sometimes less dramatic on HDTVs. So your mileage may vary depending upon your TV.

I bought the Nintendo cable (which doesn't look like the picture above, unless they've redesigned it).

Put your analyst on danger money, baby.

I've recently moved from a 27" CRT to a 32" LCD and have to say the cable has made a difference - the edges are crisper, the colours are brighter and overall it does make a difference. Obviously when certain VC games require a cable swap that's annoying, but on the whole if you have the option then go for it!

It does help/make a difference. One thing I've noticed, although I'm not sure if this is just me, is I seem to have a better response to waht I'm doing on-screen. I think it might be the graphic refresh of the progressive scan, but I feel much better able to play light-gun games (ESPECIALLY Resident Evil: Umbrella chronicles. This game, play-wise, seemed to improve a lot w/ the addition of HD cables)

Plus, monoprice.com has them for like $2.86. That site birthed Jesus.

It's called a component cable. They make a difference if you are using a HD or Plasma TV, the picture is sharper and crisper but it wont make your wii look like a 360. check that your TV has the correct in put for them and if so go for it.

So if you were to make a comparison as in "its like going from bread to toast", how would you rank the improvement? If im using standard cables on my HDTV, does it mean im not really getting 480p, am i getting like 320p instead? im really confused lol

You're not getting any progressive scan capablities with a standard AV cable. You're getting 480i. And while there is a bit of s difference between 480i and 480p, you won't notice big dividends until you start getting up in the 720p and 1080p.

So basically you're saying it doesnt make a big difference, its kind of unneccessary to buy these cables? you dont use them? Im just trying to decide whether or not to get them so this is getting closer to a resolved case here.

EDIT let me update the picture for the component cables, i have the picture of ASID's cables, not nintendo's lol

EDIT2 Fixed it

If you have an HDTV, get the component cables. It is worth it.

It just gives it a clearer look and the color depth is a bit better. You want to get any benefits out of your HDTV you can. I just think sometimes Xbox 360 and PS3 owners expect that kind of jump in quality. And it's just not quite that large a difference. But enough to warrant the cable.

Why do I want to bring back Pluto? Cuz the 8 others bullied it and I don't approve of bullying and I am here with this pointless movement to remind people of how (in)significant it really is!

Firkraag

If you have a HDTV get component cables, no question about it.

There he goes, Firkraag. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die. - My VGscore
