I've heard it's a fairly common problem for Wiis to have issues reading dual layer discs after significant use. Thankfully, I've never had that issue... until now...maybe... Today I put in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and got the dreaded disc read error (I'm pretty sure it's dual layer). The first thing I did after trying SSBB 3 times was test other games I thought were dual layer, Monster Hunter Tri and Mario Galaxy 2 (not at all sure about Mario being a dual layer). They both worked. Are those two not dual layer, or am I having some annoying Brawl glitch? And if they aren't dual layer, what are some games that are, so that I can properly test my Wii? Why does this have to happen right before Xenoblade comes out?!
I have problems with Brawl's disc (always had) but all the other dual layered games work fine. It would be free for me to send my Wii for prepare to get Brawl working correctly but as it only has problems in Subspace Emissary (100% complete already) and Classic mode, I haven't bothered with it.
Me ,I dont have that problem, except it seems SSBB takes a long time to load. What happens to me, at least it used to, is the remote would work on it's own. It would move the cursor by itself. Not the motion sensor, the select sensor, like on brawl, where you only have to select your mode with the nunchuk, if you know what i mean.

Do not touch Nunchuk's stick while it's starting the game. The analog stick must be in the normal pose at first or otherwise it will read the position it is when opening the game to normal position. That means if your Nunchuk's stick is facing right while it's reading the disc and opening the game, the game will think that facing right is it's normal pose and it goes right all the time. This has happened to me few times in Metroid Prime.
My problem is it won't read Brawl's disc at all, and it certainly wouldn't be free for me to send in the Wii anymore (I've had it since launch).
If I remember correctly, Nintendo covers this issue outside of the warranty. It is a free repair regardless of how far out of warranty your console is.
@Ecto-1 I'll have to look into that. I've sent my Wii in before and Nintendo made it all pretty fast and easy. If it wasn't free, I don't know if it would be worth paying for with the Wii U right around the corner.
@James Thanks! I'll try Other M and the Trilogy. I can't believe Monster Hunter wasn't dual layer... Does that mean it could have been even BIGGER?

Update: Both Other M and the Trilogy worked fine. On the off chance that the problem fixed itself, I tried Brawl again, and now it's working too (though it took much longer than usual to find it). So is this a problem with Brawl, or the early signs of dual layer reading issues? For what it's worth, my copy of Brawl is a launch copy.

Okay, I now officially have the dual-layer glitch. None of my dual layer games work consistently. I called Nintendo to ask if any disc lense cleaner would work, or if the Wii would accept any lense cleaner. The Nintendo rep, not exactly the most competent guy I've gotten from them, told me I should use the Wii cleaning kit because it was made for the Wii and tested on the Wii. Has anyone here fixed the problem without the official kit? It costs $15 and takes 4-8 days to get here, while unofficial cleaners cost $5 and I could get one today.

For those interested, the Nintendo brand cleaning kits are sold out on the official store (they sold out right after Xenoblade came out... I guess a lot of people just found out their Wiis wouldn't read dual layer games...). Because they're sold out, Nintendo will fix any Wii having the problem for free, shipping included. I haven't shipped mine yet, but I will as soon as I find a decent box.

I suspect that Nintendo ended up with some less than stellar optical drives in early builds of the Wii, but the fact is that the lens mechanism is a moving part and moving parts go out of alignment over time. My 2nd gen Sony DVD player had to get serviced within a few months of purchase to get the laster realigned; it's just a fact of life that if you use an optical drive a lot it will go out of alignment and the more demanding work is the refocusing on the second layer in a dual layer DVD. The tolerance of things like CD players for alignment issues is due to the greater laser wavelength and larger data pits that need to be read.
Optical repairs are about the cheapest repairs for the Wii; I think mine cost £30 with free P+P. Not playing games because you can't be bothered to slap a label on a box would seem a silly reason to miss out on great games for your console so I hope people will get their Wiis sorted rather than pass on Xenoblade Chronicles.
