I want to get Golden Axe, but I don't know which version to get. I've never played either version before. The extra points for the arcade version don't matter to me. I live in the United States, so both would be 60 Hz for me. Does the arcade version have special options like most of the other arcade games on VC? Which version do you guys (or gals) recommend?
Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.

Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.
Well, the Genesis version features more levels and a duel mode, BUT the arcade version features better graphics and sound along with DIP switch configuration, so I really have no answer for you. It depends on what you would like better.
The arcade version has a very funny ending compared to the Genesis version. I find the Golden Axe Arcade's final boss to be a tad easier as well. But again you cannot go wrong with either version just bring a friend along because it makes the game so much better
Both versions are great and have their selling points. If you're only getting one, the Genesis version might be the better choice (probably my personal fave version, but i go back and forth) since it has the extra level and the duel mode can be fun. But i agree that the Gen version might be a tad harder when it comes to bosses (particualrly the last boss). Arcade graphics and sound are better, but honestly the Gen version is pretty damn close. Also will depend on how big a fan of brawler/beat-em-up style games; if you're more casual about the genre (and don't care about price), go for the arcade version.
I used to own golden axe for the megadrive and i really thought it was excellent but also really hard.since i have the megadrive game on the megadrive console and then when i saw the arcade version of golden axe come out on the VC i was really excited. It was kinda hard to choose which one.so id go for the arcade version.trust me you might be happy with this one.
I officially own a MAME arcade machine.

The arcade version has a fantastically composed ending full of hilarity, and it looks and sounds better. But, it's shorter than the MegaDrive counterpart, although Golden Axe 2 is a good enough sequel.
