It really is a good question. Seems like it should be a no-brainer, especially since King of Kong. I can usually understand, on some level, all of Nintendo's questionable decisions or lack of actions, but this one makes no sense to me. Even if they put it up like 1000 points, people would still be buying it like mad.
It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!

The original arcade version is in DK64? That's awesome! I really hope they do release the game on Virtual Console Arcade, but so far the chances of that seem really slim since Nintendo hasn't released any arcade games since the service came out.
According to my sources at Canadian Bulldog (don't pretend you don't know who he is) News, it will take the blood of three virgin porn stars, the destruction of fourteen PS3 consoles (verified by Price Waterhouse) and twelve nose and ear hairs from Bob Barker.
I am the one you despise. I am he who says what you really deep down know but are affraid to admit. I am the Anti-Fanboy, the crusader of truth in a world built on your lies.
I still don't know why everyone wants the game so much...
While the merits of the game can be debated, as it is uberhard and is not for everyone, i would expect that a very large portion of people want it just for what it is -- the iconic arcade game that not only launched the rise Miyamoto-san and Nintendo, but also was one of the cornerstones of the popularity of arcades, much like Pac-Man. And while the arcade version of Pac-Man has seen countless releases (of which i own far too many, to the extent that i can tell when there's a been a mod in that release's version of the game code), i don't think the full version of DK has popped up all that often.
And no doubt, King of Kong made a lot of people want to play or revisit the game.
Of course, there's always MAME, or buying a cabinet!
It's a real good game, but there are plenty of better games that don't even get mention. There are a bunch of DKA whine threads about.
Another reason why everyone wants it is because the NES version is boring. I doubt many people that think the NES version is boring, wouldn't think much the same of the Arcade game. The only significant difference is an extra level which won't change people's opinions to that degree.
The arcade version not only has the extra level, but more complex visuals and animations. Unlike the NES version, the arcade version is actually fun to play again.
