It really depends on what kind of gamer you are, different games throughout the series have different areas of appeal. I appreciate story and a wealth of characters so for me, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are my favourites. I feel the series peaked on the N64.

Ocarina of Time for story and characters? What?
Majora's Mask and Wind Waker were the absolute high points of the series atmosphere/character-wise (and all the Zelda games have really cruddy stories anyway).

What is wrong with "The bad guy has kidnapped the princess. Save her"? It's such an amazing story that Nintendo can use it in every game and it never gets old.

Seriously, I just don't think that Zelda II is actually that great, IMO it is the worst Zelda. (Sorry if I offended anybody.)

There's a worst Zelda? I thought Zelda II was great. Nice challenge.

Old used Gameboys aren't that expensive, nor are the Oracle games, if those are the ones you're referring to, Metal Mario. The opportunity is still there!

@metalmario
or if you had a gamecube you can buy a gameboy player hook it up and play the zelda gba games on a bigscreen.the only zelda game i wouldnt recommend would be links awakening but only because i,myself haven't played it. but the oracles are awesome.

I'd recommend Ocarina of Time for beginners. The Gamecube version has the vibration function, if you can find it at your local Gamestop. A Link to the Past is a nice start also.

it really stinks that you have to buy points in increments of $10. you should be able to buy any amount you choose to buy. it wouldn't be hard and it's really aggravating how they do it now.

when a man gets beaten, badly, a wholesome fear is a sign of intelligence.

Ocarina is my second fav behind Wind Waker. Both perfect games.
ALttP is great, but you might hate it at first because of the difficulty. And you can't save whenever you want in Majora.
You should save the points if I were you. But I'm not you.

Legend of Zelda- good for exploring, but provides little guidance
Zelda II- very confusing game
A Link to the Past- introduced the modern Zelda format
Ocarina of Time- the best game for beginners
Majora's Mask- only for masters of OOT
Wind Waker- a cheap rehash of OOT
Four Swords Adventures- only for those who like multiplayer or ALTTP fans
Twilight Princess- experience required
