I am redoing this post because it was misunderstood. I am referring to arcade PORTS, not arcade GAMES.
The following are ports we already have: Space Invaders (SNES) Cruisin' USA (N64) Dig Dug (NES) Pac Man (NES) Donkey Kong trilogy (NES) Mario Bros. (NES) Xevious (NES) Galaga (NES) Golden Axe (Genesis) Altered Beast (Genesis) Street Fighter II (SNES)
The only port I can think of that I'd prefer over the arcade is Chelnov for the Mega Drive. The graphics are way better and you can actually tell what some of the enemies are supposed to be unlike the often-textureless sprites from the arcade. I have this on the Japanese Wii, but Atomic Runner (as it's also known) has yet to be released elsewhere.
Otherwise I'd rather the arcade, though if the only way I can play Snow Bros. is to get the Mega Drive port (which looks pretty damn good), then I'll happily do so. Ditto for Rainbow Islands (still cannot figure out why we don't have the PC Engine port of this - is the VC dead?).
Definitely if there was a choice the PC Engine version hands-down. From video I've seen it's most faithful to the arcade; only problem is I don't know if it ever got released outside of Japan for the TG-16.
Wow, I never knew about the different versions of Rainbow Islands on the NES, the European version really has that Ocean/Amiga feel to it and the music. Then again seeing the American and Japanese versions, I'd pick the Ocean version, even with it's Ocean twang to it.
Anyway, VC Arcade games, GIVE ME MY SPACE INVADERS NOW! lol
It would be awsome if they released both the arcade (or Genesis) and the NES version of Strider.
The NES version of Strider is vary underrated IMO. Perhaps it was Copcom's fault for marketing it like a direct port of the arcade game, while in reality it was a completly different game. The game was more story drivin and was much closer to the manga that the Strider games are based off of.
If I want arcade games on VC, I want them as VC Arcade releases, not the crummy ports. StarFox, why in the world do you want more ports released when the arcade versions could be released instead?
Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

I'm still patiently waiting for Strider for the Megadrive on VC. It's been rated for ages.
With regards arcade games vs ports. Sometimes I prefer the ports because they don't generally have unlimited continues and are therefore more of a challenge.
