I am a huge fan of this series and just finished the first episode yesterday. I'm curious to see how others felt about the game.
Did you enjoy it? Who were some of the characters you liked? What were some puzzles that you got stuck on? Did you try to stick the weather vane in De Singe's butt? Whom do you think the woman at the end is? ( I thought Carla )
I just finished it up last night as well, and had a great time throughout playing it.
Did you enjoy it?
Greatly; the little hiccups in the framerate were a little irritating at first, but as long as you don't run into each new area too quickly and give the sounds a chance to load, it's perfectly fine.
Who were some of the characters you liked?
Oh, all of them; very amusing dialogue throughout. Some memorable bits include the crystal-maker's remark about U-tubes, the mockery from the captain of the Narwhal when your attempts to knock him off fail, the comments from Guybrush and the Voodoo lady when you're inspecting all the oddities in her shack, and several good bits involving the Marquis.
What were some puzzles that you got stuck on?
I was never stuck for all that long, but there were a couple puzzles that I solved by pure luck, like when I decided to try pushing the parrot into that gateway without even knowing what good it would do (but it quickly dawned on me when the Marquis followed me back, and gave me a good laugh), and when I used the U-tube on the Marquis just because it was the only item left in my inventory that didn't seem to have any other use (again, as soon as Guybrush shoved it in the gun, I realized what was going on). I'm slightly proud to say that I figured out how to blow that guy off the boat very quickly -- once I had the bombs, I remembered that he used embers to attack me when I climbed the chain, and then once I had it lit and screwed up just once by sending it up the line, it immediately hit me that I should climb it and make him bring the bomb up himself. I found all the puzzles to have the perfect mix of absurdity and logic, so that you could figure them out, or you might just stumble on the solution, but it always turns out to be a pretty good joke when you see what happens.
Did you try to stick the weather vane in De Singe's butt?
Ha, indeed I did, and it was followed by one of Guybrush's clever lines. I then found it amusing the way you had to listen to his grunts in order to find the right face pieces.
Whom do you think the woman at the end is? ( I thought Carla )
I don't know about this one; I played the first two Monkey Island games many years ago, and I don't remember any characters well enough to venture a guess.
I can't wait for the next episode, and Telltale promised that they'd work out some of the sound / loading issues by then.
I got stuck a couple times. I figured most of them out in my head while I was work not even playing.
The main one that gave me trouble was the "cheese eyes". I swore you had to yank the carvings off the wall. So I ran around trying to fing something for that.
The things you could inspect that had no use threw me off a bit sometimes too. Like swordfish, broken boat, and stuff in the voodoo shack.
Such a good game. I'm not the most patient man. So the chapter wait is going to kill me. Though I still haven't checked out the Treasure Hunt option yet. How is that?
That's interesting about the "cheese eyes," because it shows how different people approach something from entirely different angles. It wasn't the jail carvings that I thought of first, but I did stick the cheese into the statue's empty slot as soon as I saw it, because the shape of the cheese wheel just fit it perfectly. Then I was stuck for just a minute trying to make markings on the cheese using the items in my inventory, until I walked back to the dock area and it dawned on me that the jail had those carvings. It sounds like you started from the other end, with the idea to use the jail carvings, and then figured out the cheese after that.
EDIT: The word "cheese" appears in the above post 5 times, which must be some sort of record for this site.
Who were some of the characters you liked? The Marquis and all the monkeys And Guybrush, of course
What were some puzzles that you got stuck on? I was stuck for short time when you have to make root grog. But this was just about 2 minutes and the game helped me out a bit with the hint feature (which I switched off after that...), the rest of the puzzles were very logically build. Not too easy like the first three Sam&Max Episodes and also not frustating, just plain fun.
Did you try to stick the weather vane in De Singe's butt? Oohm, yes... I think I´m a bit cruel.
Whom do you think the woman at the end is? ( I thought Carla ) I don´t know, but I think it´s definately not Carla. Maybe the Waitress out of Escape from Monkey Island?
1. Yes! 2. Everyone, especially the Marquis and the "parrot" ("Squawk It's me, Guybrush Threepwood Mighty Pirate™"). 3. Just the last two (finding the proof and using the weathervane). 4. Hehe... yeah... XD 5. They have a contest on the site. I'm guessing maybe she's someone who's suffered some wrongdoing by Guybrush?
Q. Who were some of the characters you liked? A. My favorite: the voodoo lady. Great animation, script, and voice acting.
Would someone please explain what the wind (cloud) icons meant in the last map? I just figured out the directions at those points by trial and error. Was there a better way?

Yes, look with the magnifiyingglass at the weather vane in your inventory and it will show you the direction to go
Getting the captain off the ship took me quite some time, and I didn't figure out that you needed to use the treasure map on the well before you started following it. The cheese puzzle I got right away - it made perfect sense to put it on the idol, and at that point, I easily made the connection to the carvings. The parrot puzzle I understood after having De Singe follow me to the door the first time, seeing him yell for me through the hole.
"Who were some of the characters you liked?" They were all good.
"What were some puzzles that you got stuck on?" I completely overlooked the clothesline somehow and I was going back and forth all over town and all over the jungle trying to figure out what I was missing that would let me clean up the grease spill on the plank. (I overlooked the anchor chain too.) It eventually got to the point of frustration and I checked a guide for help...
"Did you try to stick the weather vane in De Singe's butt?" Yep. It seemedto make sense since the idol was missing a part and he just conveniently landed there like that. And when that didn't work I went back to trekking back and forth all over the place looking for the a missing part that I could place over him or something. I even went back to his house assuming that I could get a better look around the place while he was busy. I also wanted to know where his gun went.
"Whom do you think the woman at the end is? ( I thought Carla )" No comment. I've never had a chance to play any of the previous games.

I got through that by trial and error too. I didn't realize that the weather vane could be used like that until later. I just assumed that we were supposed to watch which way the wind was blowing. A wisp of wind would come across the screen and it would seem to follow down a certain pathway, and that's the way I would go. It didn't always work though, so it turned into trial and error for many of the paths.
About the jail carvings, I had noticed those several times throughout the game so I thought of them right away when I got to that idol, but I also thought there would be a way to remove the carvings. At some point that led to just trying every item in my inventory and when I got to the cheese I first tried to push it through the bars because I thought he would use it to get rats to dig the carvings out or something.
Now, that I've beaten Launch of the Screaming Narwhal with a total time of 6:17 (from Intro to Ending + beating the 5 short Treasure Hunt levels) I came to conclude:
The first chapter was pretty good, albeit short fun. Definately keeps the spirit and humour of Monkey Island games.
The choppy framerate is bearable most of the time but is prove that this is a fast and sloppy port. The ship/ocean sequences run at 5 frames, which is good for a 3D-N64 game but not in a WiiWare game.
The one time the game froze up wasn't too dramatic because of the helpful autosave-feature, but it's a definite minus. Often it looked like the game crashed but it moved on a few seconds later.
Three times there was no voice-over but subtitles. There was certainly not enough play-testing in the WiiWare version.
Wanting 1000 points for each episode on the Wii is definately too much since you can get the much better PC version for 35 Euro. 700 points for each episode would be worth it on WiiWare too imo. And the developers from Telltale Games should fix the issues in chapter 1 and don't walk the plank to rush out chapter 2. 1000 points for a glitchy down-tuned version doesn't seem fair when you can get it cheaper and better somewhere else.
Naturally, I can't wait for chapter 2, but that doesn't mean they should rush out the WiiWare port as quickly and buggy as the first chapter. I want the WiiWare version (I have no PC), so please, dear Telltale Games, put the Grog to the side next time, and make it the shiny treasure Monkey Island it deserves to be.
I am the monkey to buy the next chapter for 1000 points, but do something about the frames, aye!
Answering the questions:
"Did you enjoy it?"
Yes of course, since I'm a fan of the the series and beaten the first 3 ones more than a dozen of times.
"Who were some of the characters you liked?"
The doctor was creepy, and the speaking skeleton parrot! The pirate folks on the island were too generic.
"What were some puzzles that you got stuck on?"
I wasn't stuck at all. I needed a bit of time to figure out of some them though.
"Did you try to stick the weather vane in De Singe's butt?"
I tried to stick everything in his butt.
"Whom do you think the woman at the end is? ( I thought Carla )"
Woman at the end?? I thought it was the doc De Singe!"
Did you enjoy it? I did! Really clever puzzles and I definitely had some great laughs. This is my first MI game, though. Could've done without the voodoo bits though.
Who were some of the characters you liked? I loved the main "villain" of the island! It made the game WAY more interesting and so funny! I wondered where Nipperkin went during the last hour of the game though.... He just disappeared. The glassblower was annoying everytime I walked by.
What were some puzzles that you got stuck on? Well, let's see... There were actually quite a few! I'll mention that the cheese wheel one was really clever. I figured the cheese wheel was to go on the idol but I didn't know what to do with it.
Did you try to stick the weather vane in De Singe's butt? I tried putting it on his foot, yeah.
Whom do you think the woman at the end is? (I thought Carla) No clue. This is my first MI game. I'm hoping something cool happens (like a plot twist) between the human pirate and Elaine.
To the poster a couple posts up, I went by trial and error also with the wind on the map in the jungle section.
Something I didn't mention when I posted before... Did anybody else waste time during the ninja doll quest trying to find a way to buy or steal one of those glass unicorns so the horn could be broken off and used as a sword for the doll? It made sense to me. I mean, the dolls are glass too, aren't they?
No, they are made of porcelain. That´s why they are called Porcelain Power Pirates
This puzzle is one of the slightly annoying ones in which you have to find a really small item. If you don´t happen to stumble upon the hotspot you tend to search like the whole game which sometimes ruins Point and Click Adventures for me.
I first thought of that glassmaker guy when wondering how I should accessorize the figurine, then, when I went to dip it in ink, I saw that broken drink glass on the ground right away. I didn't have to hunt around too long, but that can easily happen if you miss an item on screen like that.
