It's pretty balanced overall. It is easier than any other 3D Super Mario game (it's the first that I completely finished), but there are certainly some areas that are challenging for those with average skills--like me.

The challenge did vary quite a bit, but the unlock system allows for this, so you don't have to beat every level to move on, which was a departure from 2D games. If you count getting 120 with just Mario then I have beaten it. Some level were quite difficult, some unnecessarily so
The first Mario game I beat was Super Mario World, what a great game...

Easy. I only played until about 99 stars since it was a rental the week Brawl came out.

I doubt the challenging stars would be challenging though.

I liked the comets best because they weren't pitifully easy.

Getting to the final boss: Easy

Trying to get 120 stars with both Mario and Luigi: Hard. Really hard. (But for the record, I did it )

Why don't you go rent it again and try to beat it 100%.
