So the wii is pretty much dead with the expection of a couple of games (Pandora's tower, fatal frame, retro city rampage) so I thought there should br a thread were we talk about the wii and how is evolved thorough the years and how it compares to the he twins and your own personal console ranking. From middling third party support, virtual console, wiiware and much mire the old boy had a good run.
The Wii launched in NA in November of 2006, before it launched in any other territory, so I did want to point out that the Wii hasn't been around for seven years, more like five years and five months at most. The Wii as certainly had its ups and downs, with some years being the dullest I can think of (2008) and others providing gaming highlights of the year(2009, 2010, 2011). Overall, thanks to a great library of games (albeit mostly first party) Wii is my favorite home console of this generation, followed by the Xbox. I can't say much for PS3 as I never really felt compelled to buy one.
Well, despite having quite a large collection of Wii games, I haven't really played it all that much (there are heaps of games sitting there unplayed). Having said that, the games I've played have been great.
I was a bit late to the party, but I bought my Wii in 2008 or 2009 (I can't quite remember) with a Wii Fit bundle. I've always been a PC gamer, so the Wii was something a little different and I was quite keen to get into it. I had already played plenty of Wii Sports at a friend's house (he and I took tennis pretty seriously...) so I was eager to look into the Wii's library.
I slowly amassed a collection of Wii games over the last couple of years, although as mentioned above I've only played a minority of them. Super Mario Galaxy is amazing, and one of my favourite games. I also really like Brawl (having never played the previous games in the series) and have sunk a lot of time into that. The games I've played on it are:
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Ghostbusters: The Video Game
Grand Slam Tennis
The House of the Dead: Overkill
Mario Kart Wii
NBA Jam
Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Ultimate All Stars
Wii Fit/Plus
Wii Sports
Wii Sports Resort
Zack and Wiki: The Quest for Barbaros' Treasure
Art of Balance (WiiWare, one of the few games my wife has ever gotten into!)
Bit.Trip RUNNER
All of those games I've really enjoyed, and have offered something different to the experience I could get on PC. Even if motion controls don't feature prominently in some of those games, the fact that they are exclusives means that it's worth having the Wii for them.
Unfortunately I don't think the Wii had the quality and the depth of titles compared to some other consoles. Don't get me wrong - it has some great games - but my Wii collection amounts to about 80 games (including WiiWare) whereas I've easily got 130 games on DS (and still wanting to get more!). Despite that, 80 games is more than enough to keep me busy for years to come!
The Wii also served as my introduction to Gamecube games. I ended up buying a GC controller and memory card to use that capability of the Wii, which led to a small but good quality collection of about 20 GC games (including Zelda: Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, MGS: Twin Snakes, the Viewtiful Joe games and more).
All in all, I'd rate the Wii pretty well. Sure, there are things it could have done better and the library as a whole probably won't be remembered with great reverence in the future (although some individual games certainly will), but I've personally had a lot of fun with it and will continue to do so. The motion controls worked well, when appropriately employed, and the introduction of the MotionPlus impressed me quite a bit. I thought backwards compatibility was an excellent feature and has given me the chance to play games I otherwise never would.
All in all, it's a good little machine that was exceptional when developers knew how to get the most out of it. Unfortunately I had to leave it in Australia while I'm living overseas for a few years, but I'll look forward to sitting down with Xenoblade when I get home!
I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.
I'm incredibly happy with it. Skyward Sword and Monster Hunter Tri are a couple of my favorite games of all time, and I probably never would've played Super Metroid (another top 5 favorite) without the Virtual Console. Great system.
I'm quite happy with the Wii,not my favorite Nintendo console though, that spot is for the Super Nintendo.
I'd say the part of the Wii that i loved was the downloadable games, mostly the Virtual Console.
There were a lot of good games like House of The Dead Overkill,Tatsunoku vs. Capcom Ultimate All Stars,Naruto Shippuden Clash of Ninja Revolution 3,The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess,Glee Karaoke Revolution 1/2/3(if you're a fan like me ),Metroid Other M,Kirby's Epic Yarn,Mario & Sonic Winter Games,Dead Rising Chop Till You Drop,Super Paper Mario,Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3,Mortal Kombat Armageddon,Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition,etc...
Although a lot of the "Hyped" games turned out mediocre or good not great, like Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles(Leave this gameplay to House of The Dead),Monster Hunter 3(Bored me to death),Brawl(TRIPPING) and Skyward Sword(I just felt like this was the slowest 3D Zelda, worse than Wind Waker),Mario Party 8(My first party game and it was mediocre).
Overall it was a good system but could have been so much better and Nintendo seriously needs to drop the Friend Code system, one of the things i loved about the X-box 360 was the fact that a lot of people sent me hate mail online for beating them XD i enjoyed that, but with the Wii i didn't get any of that
I dunno. I really, really loved the Wii...but it was so frustrating at the same time.
It probably has the most awesome and fun gaming experiences and regardless of your or even my opinions, absolutely deserved to dominate the competition for it's innovation and amazing games. But it was also an out of date system (VC and motion controls aside) with everyone deserving to be blamed for its increasing irrelevence to hardcore gamers.
Pros: -Some of Nintendo's finest games as usual -The excellent (if still kinda flawed) selection for old games. Seriously, I can play both DKC1 and 2, Majora's Mask, Kirby's Adventure, Megaman 3, Ninja Gaiden, SMRPG and Ristar for about the price of one 360 game -Nintendo at least taking some steps towards downloadable games -A ton of creative retail games (mainly from 3rd parties) to make up for 360's early overrated mediocrity (Dead Space and Mirror's Edge started the console having great games for me) -Reminding me why Mario and Sonic rule the world (...and now the Olympics...) -The below average graphics forcing the return of beautiful looking sprite based games -World of Goo -Muramasa -Little King's Story (all 3 of these games should be like those SNES games everyone regrets not buying and then sells a million copies as a remake, if there's any justice in this world) -Xenoblade and friends -Metroid Prime Trilogy. I never even played this version of those games but it is awesome by default. -Nintendo has at least seemingly learned from their mistakes
Cons: -Wasting a year talking about how awesome 3rd party Wii games were getting while no one cared. I kinda hated most gamers for a while. -Nintendo (and others) failing to release good games consistently. The difference between 2010 and 2011 for releases is like day and night. -3rd parties not advertising good games. EA wants Dead Space to be a series, doesn't realize until Dead Space 2 that you have to advertise first. Granted, if certain companies advertised, no one would have bought it anyway and they'd be in trouble because they are not huge like EA. Maybe. I don't know anymore. -Nintendo failing the third parties. Most of them. Popular casual games and those games from E3 2010 were lucky. -Online disaster. In retrospect, this was really, really bad. I was ok with the probably really basic online for Mario Kart or Goldeneye etc. but that was just one thing. The friend codes. It was acceptable I think for DS as a mid-2000s handheld system but a later 2000s console? No. 360 and PS3, especially in 2008/9 completely destroyed Wii in that regard. -Brawl's online failures, especially with mega hype. This is what turned the "hardcore" gamers. This is exact moment, when they realized the supposed best game ever made was not and in fact had the laggiest online Nintendo has had yet. The lack of games afterwards just confirmed what they already were thinking. -I was gonna mention Mario vs. Sonic is wasted in an Olympics game but terrible NewGrounds videos had already killed that dream game for me. -New Play Control. I hate you. I hate you. I hate you. I don't care if nothing would have been released even if they didn't make these, I still hate them. Lazy. Just lazy! Metroid Prime Trilogy just confirms how lazy and cash-in it was. -Metroid Other M. This has nothing to do with your opinion. The critical, mostly fans and sales all say this game was a huge dissappointment. -Wiiware fails at the end. La Mulana, Retro City Rampage, Lost Winds 3, MIA. -Being the main cause of the "hardcore" vs. "casual" debate. This is a move so evil I'm surprised James Bond hasn't appeared to stop them.
I might get bashed but..... WII=Virtual Boy in terms of ranking nintendo consoles those two rank at the bottom of worst nintendo consoles in my eyes P.S. don't get me wrong i am a fan of nintendo it's just the wii was a disappointment in general

Alright. There were some games to play that were fun. Not a lot, but they were there. 3 exceptional games pulled it through to the end. I guess It's like the Nintendo 64 all over again.

N64 is my favorite console so I'd consider that a compliment.
I believe the Wii will be remembered as one of the greatest consoles ever. Yes it's been frustrating at times, but it's all due to the fact that the Wii has been so innovative and risky. I didn't think it was possible to base a whole console on a totally new control scheme/experience, but they did it.
As for the experience the Wii has totally changed the way I WANT to play some genres. The natural example would be FPSs, but a less obvious example (which shows how great 3rd party support has been with Wii at times) is with sports game. Konami came up with a revolutionary system to play PES that makes the game so much deeper, and playing NBA Jam with the WiiMote has turned the game upside down and made it a super intuitive, incredibly fun experience. In the end, Nintendo was right: motion controls, when correctly applied, have made the gaming experience more immersive, deeper and in a word, better.
As for the games themself, we have had arguably the greatest Mario game ever in Galaxy (and Galaxy 2) and the usual ton of world class 1st party stuff which isn't even worth mentioning because we already know how it goes. Worth of being mentioned is the great exclusive 3rd party stuff that no one played: Little King's Story, Muramasa, Shiren The Wanderer, No More Heroes, Zack & Wiki, Red Steel 2 and the list goes on and on. At least the people who didn't play them now are old enough to remember their titles and pretend they have played it when they'll be considered forgotten classics.
Online has been a bit sh!t but I can't complain cause it remembered me how fun it is to play local multiplayer. So yeah, not only the Wii has delivered, but Nintendo has pushed the envelope more than they've ever done. My only disappointments this gen have been not seeing Capcom declare definitive bankruptcy and watching both gamers and the press become more stupid, more ignorant and more immature.
Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

Wait, what?
What I meant was Metroid Prime Trilogy is literally three times the content by comparison. It's awesomeness makes the NPC games look as lazy as they really were.

You should send your Wii to Nintendo. Then you won't have to wait until the Wii U comes out to play more Wii games. It only take about a week when I sent mine to Nintendo.
BTW, the title is wrong, the Wii has been about for a few months more than 5 years, not 7 years.
