Topic: Recommend a VC game

Yo all. I'm looking for a VC game. Here's what I'm considering:

Super Mario 64
Phantasy Star IV
Secret of Mana
New Adventure Island

Problem is, I already own Mario 64 on the DS. Still, the controls are terrible in the DS version, so I was wondering if the VC version is worth it. Phantasy Star IV looks kinda cool, but the battle view and attack names are turning me off, and the exploration visuals look bland. Secret of Mana looks pretty difficult, though it looks fun at the same time. I heard somewhere that it has multi-player - if it is, does it work in the VC version? Now, I know Corbie loves New Adventure Island, but it looks repetitive and insanely difficult. I haven't noticed a password, continuing, or saving system either.

Anyway, if y'all have any other suggestions that'd be cool. I recently bought a Classic Controller, so I'd really like to get an SNES game.

Get Phantasy Star IV. I don't have it, but I plan to get it because it looks like a really good game, and it's supposed to last almost 40 hrs. And even if controls are terrible on the ds version of mario 64, you already have it, so you can get it next.

Have you played any previous Phantasy Star games? It might not matter since PS IV is supposedly the cream of the RPG crop for Genesis games and apparently the best in the PS series. But, I personally can't recommend it since I have never played a PS game, though I do want to buy all the VC ones someday.

Now, as for games I've actually played. Since you kind of already have Super Mario 64, I'd say go with Secret of Mana. If you like RPG's and if you like free-roaming like Zelda, SoM is a great game. Good story and gameplay, and easily one of the top-tier 16-bit RPG sountracks of all time. (Read: Lovely music). Also, it's not really that difficult. And yeah, the multiplayer works just fine with the VC.

Then again, if you feel like jumping around as a plumber, SM64 is always good. Works really well with a Wavebird, if you have one.

...Oh and that other game mentioned...can't recommend due to not playing. Is that the new WiiWare one? >_>

I have all except NAI. Secret of Mana is fantastic and a secure bet. And yes: has multiplayer (battles are active likes Zelda). I love both others, but go inmediatly to download Secret of Mana if you like RPGs.

I am playing now Super Mario Bros 2 (Lost Levels). It´s terribly difficult, but challenging. Very recommendable too.

EDIT: Obviously, if you seek to play with others on Secret of Mana, other classic controller is needed. Another SNES brutal game is Super Metroid. Good luck with your election!

EDIT 2: My english is pure trash, I know...

I asked some of my friends, and they all recommend Secret of Mana too. One quick Q, can you play multiplayer with a Classic Controller and a GameCube controller?

Act Raiser if you haven't already. One of the best SNES games ever.

As for multiplayer, SoM is a good bet. I bought it a while back and it is quite fun. It is pretty difficult though, but not to the point of frustration. And the two computer AI are very stupid. They get stuck behind walls alot and you can't move forward without them. It's best played with 3 players, but isn't impossible with 1. I managed to get to nearly the end alone.

The best strategy in the game: go up stairs and pause balls.

My favourite VC titles are: Mario 64, Zelda Ocarina, Zelda Majora, Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country (any)

It's a me, Luigi!

You can play Secret of Mana with Classic or GCN pads, like any SNES game. It is a decent multi-player game but only barely passable as a single-player game.

I would never have bought it back in the day at retail price, but for $8 it's fun to play through once if you have friends who'll play regularly enough to finish it together.

It's fun 2P or 3P. The game isn't hard enough that it matters too much if you play 2P and let the CPU die, at least not as far as I've gotten.

you can play multiplayer games with both gamecube and classic controllers.
the gamecube controller works well with the N64 games, but doesn`t feel so great to use with other VC games though.
as for my VC recomendations,
super mario bros 1 + 3 (NES)
punch out (NES)
super probotector/contra (SNES)
super mario world (SNES)
street fighter 2 turbo (SNES)
wave race (N64)
1080 snowboarding (N64)
sonic 1, 2, 3 (megadrive/genisis)
metal slug 1 + 2 (NEOGEO)
king of fighters '94 (NEOGEO)
as for mario 64, if you didn`t like the ds version, i`m sure you`ll not be much of a fan of it on the VC either.

Secret of Mana is a lot of fun, even single player (IMHO), but prepare to scream and curse when the dumbass CPU gets stuck behind a hedge or something and the screen won't scroll until you pull him out.

It's a fun game, one of the few RPGs I truly enjoy, but it's debateable as a "must download" title in my eyes. I grabbed Pulseman on a whim last week and I'm loving it. It's one of those rare games that, just a few minutes in, you already know will be worth replaying.

Super Metroid. Yeah, get that.

But looking at games form your list, I'd go with PSIV (unless you have a PS3 or 360, then you can just get it on the Ultimate Genesis Collection). I've played better RPGs, but PSIV is still great, easily the best of the original PSs. Despite inferior controls, Super Mario 64 DS is still the definitive version of Mario 64 IMO, due to all the cool extras. I've only played SoM in single-player, and didn't find it to be that special. Perhaps you need to play it in multiplayer to get the full enjoyment out of it?
Lastly, I heard New Adventure Island was mediocre.

@Ricardo91: Already own Super Metroid.

The fact that you can play an RPG simultaneously with a friend is what's selling me on SoM. Thanks for all the help, guys.

It's pretty mindless hack and slash with little variety as far as I got (still need to finish it). Played in short doses though, it's not bad.

Not on your list I know but you can't go wrong with Do Re Mi Fantasy. Absoloutly brilliant game. Of your choice I'd go with SoM, mario 64's great but if you already played it you should try somethin different. Do Re Mi , Do Re Mi

What's this bit for again?

retired_account

Already got SoM, and it rocks. I'll have to get DoReMi some time. I have been eying it.

Yes. It's awesome. Combat is strategic and satisfying, and upgrading you dude's armor and level is fun. Can't wait to get a party member for some multi-player madness.

And the pixelart is GORGEOUS. Oh my gosh, I dropped dead when I saw it. Lucky for me pixel men get 9999 lives.

SonicMaster

Maybe I'll get it soon. Which would be better, SoM or Pulseman? Because I REALLY want pulseman.
