How is getting something free disappointing. I am happy to be getting anything. And the punchout wiiware game sounds good to me.

It's not really free. I've spent quite a lot of money as a Nintendo customer and built up my points in hopes of a really cool prize. Looking off at Japan or Europe, there's a lot of cool stuff they could have given us. What we got was... well... kind of lame.

Of course, it may have helped if Punch Out didn't seem like such a poor deal. Most of the Club Nintendo games are nothing amazing, but they are a) on physical media that can be collected/resold and b) truly original titles that aren't just sliced from a larger commercial game and dressed up a bit.

Game and Watch Collection is compromised of original titles? Tingle's Balloon Fight isn't just a commercial game dressed up a bit?

No actually it is. It's completely free.

Do Microsoft or Sony give you anything for buying their games?

It's like buying a car with free oil changes and saying, "Oh, but they really cost me like ten thousand"

No, not really. It's definitely a clone of an earlier Nintendo game, but it's not like they just cut out a small section and re-skinned the NES game. If they had, it would be a lot less impressive. Especially if said, reskinned segment of game were offered as a download rather than physical media.

Think of it like Paper Airplane being the prize instead of Punch Out. As a $2 sliver of another game, it wouldn't be a very impressive reward for being a loyal Nintendo customer. Especially when you know that the intrinsic value is approaching zero.

Interestingly, that situation can be salvaged somewhat. If Paper Airplane was sent out on a special cartridge available only to Club Members, its intrinsic value may still be low, but now you have a rare physical item upon which a completely different sense of value can be placed. Since you can't buy it anywhere, it's basically priceless. The closest dollar amount that can be assigned is the cost of acquiring the necessary Nintendo points. Yet it's also rare. So if the demand is high enough, the dollar value (and thus the personal value to a collector) can go quite high. Which is in addition to whatever personal value you extracted by playing the game while you owned it.

You have an odd definition of "completely free". Nintendo has made a specific offer. i.e. Make these purchases and we'll allow you to count those purchases towards more stuff. As further incentive, it you make at least X number of purchases, we'll throw in Y stuff.

For better or for worse, that is a real factor in making purchasing decisions. Ergo, their stuff is not "free". Especially since you pay for it in Nintendo's higher software prices.

Do Microsoft or Sony give you anything for buying their games?

This is neither here nor there. Weber Grill doesn't give me special coupons for visiting, but McDonalds just gave me one with my sandwich this morning. All that means is that Sony and Microsoft do business different from Nintendo,

It's like buying a car with free oil changes and saying, "Oh, but they really cost me like ten thousand"

I didn't claim that the prizes cost me the $600 in stuff I had to purchase, only that they're not completely free. Just like those "free oil changes" aren't really free either. They're included in the price of the vehicle. And if you're a wise consumer, you will make sure that the car company lives up to their promises and you get your money's worth out of those "free oil changes". Because at the end of the day, TANSTAAFL.

In any case, I don't want to get anyone else down. I'm just saying that I personally am disappointed. While the Mario Hat would be cool if I was in to that sort of thing, the Punch Out option is (IMHO) simply lacking in value. That is all.

The Doc Louis fight is just as original as Tingle's Balloon Fight. Doc Louis is a new fight. Sure, Balloon Fight probably has more levels, but I unfortunately haven't played it yet (will probably import it later this year). But the G&W collection is definitely nothing original. I don't think there is another original game like Tingle's Balloon Fight that has ever been a reward in Japan. Not to my knowledge, anyway. That's asking a lot of the company.

I don't think Alex's idea of free is wrong, either. If you specifically bought games in order to get a better prize, you're missing the point. The reward is not supposed to be worth the amount of money you spent on games. It is a loyalty reward, an incidental gift. Nintendo offers it as a thank you to keep its fans satisfied. I don't think the intent was for people to go out and buy as many games as they could in hopes of a cool reward.

I mean, they well could have not given us anything, so really, it is free. Oh, and on a side note, I had the opposite reaction to the prizes you had. I think the hat is a pretty lame gift, but the Doc Louis fight would be really cool if I were into Punch Out... but sadly, I'm not. Here's hoping for an exclusive NSMB Wii level next year.

I'm glad I brought up this topic, I like seeing everybodys opinon. HERE IS MINE: I am looking foward to my code for D.L.'s punch out!!, I did not want the hat because I can get it off ebay, I WISH we would have gotten the super famicom classic wii controller or the mario galaxy soundtrack or even a Tingle Game, But I do like Punch Out!! so its okay for them to use my platnum status for it. As far as it being free...... I had the games and systems before club nintendo came to america and I am glad I'm getting anything, so its free for me, But if I spend the money for platnum status next year they better make it a better gift!!!! I hope we get better rewards to spend are coins on too!!!!

Awesome

So how much do these prizes cost?

Can you give me an estimate on how much of that 50 bucks of each game goes towards your Club Nintendo prize?

Tell me more! (If you want!)

Is there a Balloon Trip mode? Is it basically a reskinned version of the original?

I need more Balloon Fight.

I agree the gift is free as you do get to spend the coins on items from the club nintendo website and then also receive a gift (which by definition costs the recipient nothing) at the end of a Nintendo year. Look on the bright side, you could be a european club nintendo member and receive didely squat each year.

Gamer83

This is only one fight but it's free so I'm not going to complain. I love the Punch-Out games and I'm sure I'll play this more than once, I have no use for the Mario hat. I'd be lying though if I said I wasn't a little let down by the choices that Platinum Club members get. I was hoping for a choice between NES, SNES or N64 classic controllers.

Just to nitpick, you can play it on any DS. It's not DSi-exclusive.

Unfortunately, that video barely shows the first level of either mode, and neither seems particularly different. I'd really only get this if I knew two or three people with a DS so I could do the new 4-player mode, which could definitely be fun. But I don't know but one other person with a DS, so I'll stick to the VC game. I prefer the retro look to this anyway. Thanks for the link!

I'm kinda late on the topic but yeah like Corbie said, TBF is great fun. You'll be addicted until you beat all 99 levels, then you'll just play it every so often. I just wish there were hi-score charts in the game
