So we don't spoil the others who are discussing this game in other threads, but haven't played it, or made much progress, let's discuss strategies in this thread. Either general strategies, or specific battles.
I'll start:
My hand healed to the point that I can play this game again, and I figured I'd dive right in and wage war against Duvroc.
And holy heckfire was he hard! He's only the second boss, right? Or did I skip one? The Onii King was a pushover. This guy took me hours, literally. (Well, not entirely true. I did beat him pretty quickly, but I couldn't make it through the battle without losing 10 or more of my men...and with a village population of 45, that's unacceptable to King Philzo.)
I want to share the strategy I ended up using that resulted in me beating him with no losses on my side, not because I think it's a GOOD strategy (it's not) but because I want others who have beaten him to chime in and let me know what they did. It seems there's many ways to take him down, and I want to compare what I did to what I probably should have done...
I had 15 men (my max at the time). 5 lumberjacks, 2 farmers, 7 grunts. The first thing I'd do is swarm the six oniis that are just hanging around causing trouble. Easy. Then I'd send the lumberjacks/farmers at the boss to chisel away at his stack of beer crates. I went for no damage here...I'd call them back well in advance of when I needed to...no sense taking damage considering what comes next.
Anyway, eventually I'd have knocked all the beer crates out from under him, and I'd have no damage to my men. Then I'd attack him with the lumberjacks/farmers (no grunts, because they take damage when he swats them off, and I need NO damage until the final phase of my plan...) until about 3/4 of his energy remained.
At this point, more oniis arrive on the cliffs to throw things at you. I don't have any archers (I have a really hard time lining them up in the heat of combat...they end up running into walls and stunning themselves instead of attacking, and it just distracts me, and gets them killed), so I just avoid the projectiles. Then I swarm Duvroc with everything I have. All 15 men pounding away on him. By the time I need to call them off, he's down to about 1/2 power, and the pogostick oniis arrive.
I dodge whatever Duvroc does next (fire, ice, etc.) and swarm him again. This should bring him down to 1/4 power. The pogo oniis are attacking me, but I'm not giving them any attention. Ditto the club oniis that show up now. My plan is to just bombard Duvroc until he dies, taking the oniis with him.
If I attack the oniis, it does make the battle easier, in a sense, but I take a LOT more damage, and there's so many opportunities for things to go wrong, what with pots flying everywhere and fire being sprayed across the ground...
So basically I just chiseled away his beer crates with lumberjacks, then swarmed him with 15 men when he was on the ground, tanking him to death, and fortunately just managing to beat him before he killed my guys instead.
Please tell me there's a better strategy than this.
I had a lot of trouble with the Onii king for some reason. I went around doing just about everything else I possibly could before I was powerful enough to deal with him. After that fight I took up a quest in an area I hadn't been to yet (and still haven't figured out how to get to) and I made a mad dash trying to reach that area when I discovered that it had a time limit (hadn't seen that yet at that point so it never occurred to me). I had trouble getting through the Sunflower Plains though and I couldn't do anything when I did get through it (couldn't figure out where to go or didn't have lumberjacks and miners yet or something).
So I spent a good long while doing just about everything I possibly could at that point in the game. When I eventually got back around to going after the next two kings again, I actually did Shishkebooboo first. I beat him the first time but he slaughtered a lot of my troops in the process. (I got them all back though. I actually haven't permanently lost too many people yet. Resurrection Beach seems to have a 99% success rate as far as I've seen.)
Anyway, so after all that I finally went after Duvroc and at that point I was able to pretty much just brute force it. I just focused on hitting the crates (and my hardened soldiers leaped up onto him while everyone else hacked away at the crates so he was mostly dead already by the time I got to attack him directly). I'm currently working on whatever various random stuff I need to right now before going after whichever king comes after those.
One bit of advice I can give you: Use B to recall your troops before an enemy attacks. Throw everything you've got at the enemy, and pull them back when you see signs that the enemy is about to do something so they don't get thrown off or trampled or whatever else. (edit: Woops, looks like you already knew that. Sorry, that's all I have.)
edit2: If you're curious about my party right now: I can have up to 23 units right now. I have something like 10 fighting units right now (all hardened soldiers, no grunts) and maybe 6 archers and then one each of the specialty stuff (lumberjack, miner, farmer, merchant, mega carpenter, cook... am I forgetting something?)
Sounds about right to be honest, though I ONLY used grunts and archers for most boss battles, I just call them back often. If you can get a relay going whereby you have half your men in the fight and half your men behind you, recall to avoid attacks while sending the next batch in, that worked for me. Most of the bosses i completed in a fairly ad-hoc manner tbh and some of them weren't pretty at all. I really suggest getting used to using archers as they can stun enemies with the right stuff equipped I use them as a shield, then when they are out of arrows, send 'em in.
If you struggled with Duvroc your gonna pull your hair out later on.

Most of the bosses I found really challenging to be honest, and yes that includes Duvroc!
I mostly just hocked grunts at Duvroc... You didn't even need to kill the boxes... I'm just getting to the Egg area, and from what I heard it was a quiz, and there was an infinte door.
Killed that Shishkabooboo guy last night. I was looking for Duvroc strategies online (wasn't cheating! I had already beaten him by that point) and noticed that Shishy was literally across the street to be conquered.
Again, that took hours! But only because--yes, I'm a dope--I didn't realize that pressing A sent your troops out ahead. I thought you could only walk left and right. Pressing A seemed to switch the order of your troops, but the perspective wasn't one I was used to and so I wasn't seeing them run out ahead when I pressed A.
Once I realized that, I went from losing every time to beating him with the loss of only one man. Very fun boss.
And yeah, Machu, I can tell already I'll be pulling my hair out every time I fight a new boss. I think for a while I'm going to stick to minor quests and some of the collection sequences. I'm burnt out on large-scale, population decimating battle!
Two questions: If you end up losing all of your villagers, or most of them, is there any way to get more? Let's say you don't have enough money to build another house, or if you're already built out. Do you just have to wait for people to fall in love? You'll just end up with a kid, then. Not really a good way of building your numbers back up if you lose 20 or more folks in battle. Anyone know?
Also, how does the Reincarnation Beach work? Someone said that your citizens are reincarnated five times, and then they die for good, but no way in heck is that true; I've lost a few people and there's no way they died five times. It seems random, but there also seems to be a greater than 50% chance of reincarnation...as far as my experience goes anyway.
@CB: It's one of those games where I'd spend all evening playing, then get to the boss, and find myself having to turn it off after 3 attempts cos it's bed time and I was flagging. Then the next day, I'd amble about for a couple of Alpoko days fully aware of the fact I couldn't avoid the pain much longer. I overloaded on mini quests and finding art and stuff, I did all my exploring early on and was left with a bit of a boss run at the end. Most bosses were trial and error, ie... walk in, lose ten men instantly , restart and then try again, but this time knowing what not to do. So long as you save just before you head off to the battle its not too painful, but sometimes, it really really was.
I couldn't accept great losses, so retried boss battles till I got it right, if I lost 5 of them in the final assault then so be it. As for the population, new houses do become available at nice intervals, and you CAN age children eventually.
As for the beach and it's revivingness, I couldn't tell tbh. Just as you get used to having them returned, you'll go to the beach next day, to find nobody there. Seeing my first funeral was what prompted me to reload boss battles rather than cope with losses. Cheating I know, but I didn't care. I imagine you could add a further 5hrs onto my completion time for failed and reloaded boss attempts.
You're making me want to play it again. I'm playing Okami atm which is cool n' all, but LKS is tempting me back for a run on hard. Dare I?!
Call me a heartless tyrant but i don't care how many of my peeps die along the way to world domination, i think Howser's Hitler complex has rubbed off on me
I find with archers you have to be careful not to have them stand to close to a wall when shooting targets on higher ground or their arrows are blocked by the cliff face, also for anyone who is unaware you can return to your castle anytime by bringing up the Menu and pressing 2, this can be a lifesaver at times when your troops have been decimated and you need to get out of a place fast.
At the moment I am just about to do battle with my first king, couldn't tell you which one yet until i get there, all i know is world domination will soon be mine. (Evil laugh)
I'm with Machu on this one I don't mind losing two or three people but if it starts to become a massacre then it's restart time.I like to work out the best tactic for each monster/boss.I killed the Pinball boss without losing a man after about four tries.Mind you I've only killed 2 king's at the moment so perhaps the kamikaze approach will come later. I'm gonna go on it later ooh can't wait.I'm really taking my time with this game and loving it.I sometimes play it and can spend an hour just organising my troops and equipping them.I love my Kingdom
@Stevie - That's a good tip about the 2 button. I didn't see it mentioned in the game or the manual but it can be a lifesaver sometimes and also cuts out a lot of travelling ,as do the cow cannon's.
EDIT - Re: the beach. It say's that some peole washed up on shore but when I get there and smash the pots there's nothing in them. WTF?

Anyone else with some archer assistance? I hate having to use them right now, because if I see an Onii on a cliff (as an example) and I send archers out to shoot him, there seems to be a 50% chance that they'll just run face-first into the cliff and get stunned. Am I wrong in lining up the guide line with the enemy I want to attack? It seems to make them just walk straight ahead, and they may or may not realize that I'm trying to get them to shoot an enemy above.

This much I know! If you go first thing in the morning, you'll see the washed-up people there, and you can talk to them, recruit them, whatever.
But if you go later in the day, they will have already left the beach on their own and reintegrated themselves into city life. Don't worry; they're alive if the ticker told you so!
@Chicken Brutus . Ahh so that's what happening.I thought my population wasn't dwindling but couldn't figure out where the little buggers (sorry my faithful subjects) were. Thanks man I know what you mean about the archers that happens to me a lot as well, hopefully someone can tell us . looks in Machu's direction.
@CB: I know what you mean about the archers being tricky and getting stuck on walls n stuff, start lobbing them in from further away perhaps. I got quite handy with them by the end, but know what you mean. Use the analogue to gently edge in until the targeting line hits them and you can see their health, then STOP and lob a couple of 'em in. I know you know all this already so don't know what else to suggest other than finding the right angle of approach. Hope you grow to like them cos they come in so handy.
Woot.Just killed King Duvroc, the drunken bum that he was, after my third attempt, man that was hectic (trying to dig the spa while fending off olni was craaaaazy) ,there wasn't too much strategy going on I tell thee but I only lost two men in the end so not too bad.Now check out my castle.3 Wives and table tennis what more could a king want? Did you know that if you press C while playing TT you enter first person view,I thought it was cool anyway.Right who's next bring it on,man I love this game.
@Luigidude: No, I didn't know that ha, thanks. I never beat the world champion (despite MANY attempts), I'll try that out see if it helps, I doubt it will but worth a try.
Is there anything more fun than choosing which pieces of art to adorn the walls?
And who is your favourite towns person, you must have one?
Oh yeah I'm lovin decorating my castle walls now.I've got a picture of all of my wives up and the Andy Warhol one next to my bed. My fave person is a guy called Mike, which was my dad's name who recently passed away, I never take him out to battle I just let him wander round chillin'.I'll probably take him out for the final showdown when I reach it though . Looks like I've a couple more guardian's to fight next so I'll save them for tomorrow as I'm off to bed very shortly, too many late night's recently I was a mess at work today LOL. Oh yeah that's what I was gonna ask you...do you know if it makes any difference if some of your townspeople hate you?Is it just a case of I need to talk to em' a bit more as I do have a habit of ignoring them a bit sometimes,I mean I'm trying to unite the world ,I've got more important things to worry about
Do you make them stay out late at night doing adventuring and stuff? Do you let their family members die? Do you stroll about all King-like looking down upon them?
I don't know dude and that's the beauty. Glad to hear you have a fave dude, Mine was Matt obv. and like you, he chilled about town, going about his business, until that is... the final fight!! He didn't survive that though. lol
Oh yeah I work em' to the bone some days,I mean I try to get em' back to bed but sometimes your in the middle of something and don't wanna stop. They'll get their reward someday. How can you tell who's family members ,is it that they live in the same house? And yeah I am pretty King like, gotta show em' who's boss after all
Dontcha just love devoting a WHOLE day to collecting taxes. Mwahahah.
Don't know if anyone is related actually, apart from the families you create of course. I reckon you are just working them too hard. You slave driver!!
