Hi guys,

we just released part 2 of our "Making of Jett Rocket" Blog.
http://jettrocket.wordpress.com/

This time we tell you some stuff about the actual gameplay, Jett Rockets moves and why the game runs in 60fps (as proposed by Imerion).

Once again very interesting!
I agree on many of the design choices you made. Being able to explore levels is fun, but not if the level is too big and you get lost.
Jet pack and vehicles sounds great as well. At first I thought the vehicle-sections were separate from the normal levels, but now I understand they are part of them, which seems much better. That way they are not just mini-games but integral parts of the gameplay.

Also nice to see you wrote something about 30/60fps. Another design choice I appreciate, 60 fps really does make a difference to the overall feeling. I still wonder how much the shader effects affect fps though. I understand geometry and fill-rate is pretty much half in 60 fps (though still enough to create stunning games) compared to 30 fps. But are the shader/texturing effects affected the same way?
Not that you seem to have a problem with it, I am merely curious.

Also, I guess having everything run great at 60fps would make it easier to add a split-screen mode in games where that could be useful. Perhaps, instead of removing detail the splitscreen mode could simply run at 30fps instead and the game can be kept intact. Rather that than draw-in and less detail. I figured thats one of the reasons Mario Kart manages to keep the graphics in the splitscreen mode so close to the single player ones.

Didn't noticed you used Wordpress until a minute ago!

Anyway, I've got a question which I think you may have allueded to. Because of the filesize limit was there more incentive to go for 60fps due to the fact that higher detail would require much more space?

@Imerion: Good to hear you like the new blog.
Regarding your shader question, in theory you can run twice as many shaders stages in 30fps then in 60fps. In real life we already occupy for most shaders already the maximum of available texture slots, so 30fps wouldn't bring there any benefit here. You are right about the split screen. For our next Wii Ware game, which supports up to 4 players split screen, we can go down to 30 fps. However, currently we try some things to get even 4 player mode at 60fps (with software occlusion rendering), tho thats really very very hard at the moment.

@Oregano: There is no direct relation between filesize and detail. The reason is that you may have 1GB storage on disc but you only have less then 100Mb of RAM you can use in the Wii. In Jett Rocket we uncompress alll the time new data from the archive into the RAM and so we can manage to have good detail even without a big storage medium in back.

Interesting read

Any news on when you can announce the release date? I thought you said you'd be able to announce it last week, but obviously that didn't happen

Wow, thanks for answering. I always figued there was a correlation or does it only apply when you're talking about texture resolution?

Also interesting to hear about you next game.

@Manfred: I see. Thanks, that answers my question. Also interesting to hear the next game will have four player splitscreen. We also know it will be racing and very fast. I hope for something futuristic, like F-Zero, or perhaps a kart racer. Maybe some type of combat racing. Or a bit of each. (Also, software occlusion rendering, like ambient occlusion? Interesting!)

Congrats on the release date too! Will of course be getting it on day one.

I'm looking forward to this. The game shows some serious effort put into it, and I'd like to reward the developers.
