I noted recently that my games collection had exceeded my wildest childhood dreams.
Over the past two months alone, 12 new Wii games have been purchased (or traded for) and my collection is currently sitting at just over 50 Wii games plus another 35+ GameCube games. It's starting to make me wonder: how much is too much? When you have far more games than free time to enjoy them, is something wrong?
My justification (to myself and my wife) for owning so many games now hinges on several key points: (1) I've been very dilligent about looking for good deals. For example, the average price per game for those 12 new additions has been roughly $15+tax... and it would have been lower except for one title pushing the averages up. (2) Buying games when they are available is easier and often cheaper than looking for them later. (3) With a new addition to our family on the way, this is my last great splurge. I'm essentially "setting myself up" for months or maybe years to come.
Am I turning into a hoarder? Do you think I have too many games? Interested in hearing the size of other collections, and what your thoughts/opinions are about buying games.
(For the record, my last 12 games were: Boom Blox Bash Party, Cursed Mountain, Dawn of Discovery, Dead Space Extraction, Chocobos Dungeon, The Godfather, Star Wars Lego, Little King's Story, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Mushroom Men, Pikmin NPC, and Rabbids Go Home.)
shouldn`t rally matter, just as long as they get played. besides. when your kiddie gets old enough, you can enjoy those games all over again. and create a future game fan
Ha! That's almost normalcy for me. I'll go a long time without buying stuff, but then when I do, I buy a lot of games within a short period of time. That's why I have 33 unfinished games, and my collection looks like this
@grenworthshero: I hate (envy) you and your sweet collection...
"Don't make enemies, they'll stab your heart; don't make friends, they'll stab your back. Including me, including you, all men are trash. Don't love; don't be loved. Have nothing to do with other; live in isolation."
When I hit 30 systems and 2000 games, I new I'd arrived at a point where I was going way overboard. Of course, that hasn't stopped me. And if you ever get to feeling bad about it, just take a look at some of those REALLY insane collections out there. Then you'll feel like maybe you're not so crazy after all. It always makes me feel better, anyway.

Wow when I read the first sentence of your reply I thought you would be in the book of world records.
@ejamer You should feel proud you got that much compared to mine ! I better go get some more games !
@ejamer: You're seeking out great deals, amassing a great collection of quality games, and thinking towards the future. It sounds like you're making all the right decisions, and you're definitely going to benefit from this huge collection, since you seem to be a fairly avid gamer. If your money supply gets too slow, you should definitely stop, since you now have a family to consider.
If you think New Super Mario Bros. Wii is hard, try Super Mario Bros. 3.

Books I'm reading: "Uncle Tom's Cabin"
I have around 1000 games myself and 15 systems. 99% of the nerd-game-collecting world is in way more dire an addiction circumstance than yourself--feel proud
I always feel like I'm doing what you said in your last point--hoarding for the eventuality when I stop buying games so I still have a ton of stuff to play. Hundreds of unbeaten backlogged games later.....

@ejamer: I completely agree with DK vs KK, you're spending money wisely and finding the best deals. I however, never buy used disk-type games (after an unfortunate incident with buying Super Monkey Ball 2 at EB games) so I always get new games, which costs more, but is new and no risk of it being all scratched up. Plus I get a few games a year as gifts. Here's my collection of games (That I can think up of off the top of my head):
22 wii games (14 I bought myself) Over 15 DS games around 20 Gamecube games over 20 N64 games 10 SNES games (all i bought myself within a few years) 20 NES games (most I bought myself within a year) about 10 GBA games a few GB and GBC games A Game boy A Game Boy Pocket (Broken) A Game Boy Color A Game Boy Advance (GBA) A Game Boy Advance SP(GBA SP) An original Nintendo DS A DSi A NES A SNES A N64 A Gamecube A Nintendo Wii Multiple VC DSiWare and WiiWare games
So I have a good collection, but many people have even more than I do. And of course I got all the N64 and past games used as they are cartridge games which I find buying used works out fine unlike disk games (but I don't have a used DS game yet) Swerd_Murd is right, don't worry about it.
Thanks for the reassurance and advice, guys! It's nice to know that others don't think holding onto games is crazy -- my friends all trade theirs in, but I see a lot of value in keeping them around. As long as I'm committed to playing everything and have enough money to support my family, the collection will keep growing... at least until I catch up with some of those other big collections.
@grenworthshero: That's an awesome collection, especially how each gaming generation is covered! And I'm totally jealous of your cool Wario figure protecting the shelves. But how many photos do you think it would take to get all of Corbie's or Swerd_Murd's games on display? How do they even store that many? Numbers like that boggle the mind! (totally envious!)
I wish I put all my games in one place. With more than 350 games in my house even without my brother's games being here when he's at college, I have them all in little cases spread throughout my room. I should try and put them all in one spot.
But with games, I say collect them. Don't trade them in, and when you get a chance to play them, play them.

Like, for instance, the Angry Video Game Nerd. Dear lord, that man's collection is a museum.

@ejamer considering I have just over 200 games there (not including WW/VC), I can't imagine fitting collections of over 1000 in my small room as it is now.
I told my wife about this thread. She laughed when I told her that my collection is too small in comparison, and that I need to work harder to catch up.
The funny thing is that her first reaction was "but how much do those people earn?" It's a valid point. Despite loving games for as long as I can remember, this is the first time I've had a real collection of games. So this is what we work for, eh? I guess being 30 and working hard every day at a full-time job has some benefits - I am finally in a position to afford what I want in life. Every time I buy a new game, it's like reaching one of my childhood dreams.

It doesn't really sound like you have an addiction or anything to me. (Even though I've only got about 30 games and 2 systems myself.) Honestly I wish that I had more games myself. If you want to see some people with problems go check out grenworthshero and stuffgamer 1's Backloggeries. (No offense though guys.) Plus you said it yourself, your gonna have a kid soon, it sounds like you have the perfect way to get him/her into gaming sitting right there in your living room.
