Apparently this game is all that and a bag of potato chips, so I'm going to pick it up first chance I get (it's been sold out at Gamestop for like a month). But I've heard the game is wicked difficult--thing is, I kind of suck. So how difficult is this game, would you say? Is it offputing, the difficulty? Or is it fairly balanced?

No it has three difficulty levels (maybe more, still not completed it ,my bad). The easy setting is fine if ,as you say, you suck. The normal difficulty I found just right. Not tried hard yet but apparently that is tough. Just get it dude,it's awesome.
You'll be fine Kid A. It's one of those games where even if you die often, each time is a learning experience. When you eventually smite whatever boss is giving you trouble, you will do it in style having fine tuned your strategy.
It never gets frustrating, because it's so much fun. As mentioned, save every day, before or after bed, and you will never lose more than that days activities if it all goes bad and you want to reload the save.
Well you may or may not know that in the game you control King Corobo and a small army of workers and soldiers, in battle you send your peeps in to do the dirty work for you, at times you may be using the wrong tactic and find that a lot of your peeps die, however as long as you flee the battle before the Little king dies it is not game over. Some have commented that they didn't like losing there peeps, this is due to the charm of the game that leads to you getting attached to them, however if you play it like i did (relentless tyrant) this isn't such a issue, also a good number of your peeps who die wash up on resurrection beach the next day ready for another crack at their slayer.
I played the game on easy and whilst some parts of the game were moderately hard, it was never impossible or became frustrating and if I did die I had a good idea of what I needed to do the next time to avoid this.
LKS was my favourite game of 2009 (and quite a few others judging by the GOTY results) and it is one of the most charming and original games I have played, besides if you do get stuck you've got your friends at NL to give you a push in the right direction
Well the Nintendo Life GOTY podcast certainly opened my eyes a bit (it's always been on my "to-buy list", but it kept on getting pushed back. Now, though, I'm buying this fo SHO (pardon my slang). But it seems like I've heard a lot of people talk about how challenging it was. I've just finished playing Spirit Tracks, NSMBW, and Wario Land 4 on hard mode, so I'm a bit burnt out on challenging games. But this one seems to have enough charm and well, awesomeness to justify a purchase. Plus then I can actually say that I've supported 3rd party Wii games (I do, but not very often)
