Hey Panda, I didn't realize it was you that reviewed it. I actually stayed away from pub darts based on your review and the horrible video. Everyone here is loving the Rage... (Ok that was really bad) but I look forward to hearing your comparisons. When will the review be out?
The darts genre isn't stupid, but the way Pub Darts turned out I don't blame you for interpreting my opinion in the review that way. It was excessively bland and bare-bones to the point of being pretty much useless as a video game. Pointing at the screen, holding a button down and waggling the Remote for a bulls-eye every time isn't fun and does indeed make the genre look bad. Rage doesn't do a lock-on thing so it actually takes a bit of skill to hit your target.
The theme is a little odd (angry darts?), but it at least stands out and the game itself is loads better too.
EDIT: The review will be out within the next day or two. Sorry about the delay, but I've got a pretty busy work week. I will say that if you want a good darts game on the cheap then it's the best bet on WiiWare. Shame there's no free play mode though; you'd think something like that would come standard.
IGN spoke highly of DR in their weekly Wii-Ware Round Up section. The reviewer mentioned that the wii-mote controls seemed to work really well. 600 points is not too shabby. I'm getting this.
Well I got Pub Darts and REALLY hated it! I'm not really sure if I want to get this after being burned so harshly on my last darts purchase... I'll probably end up passing as I have been trying to cut down on my shop channel spending.
The review is all done, it's just waiting for someone to get around to proofing it. Hopefully soon!
If you can't wait, like I said before, it's a much better game than Pub Darts and I think it's worth it if you like darts. It's got a few problems but nothing deal-breaking.
I don't know why you are getting scorned for your last review, seemed pretty fair to me:
Forgive the comment intrusion, but I seem to be having problems posting a comment of my own.
No mention of aiming/throwing/controls, graphics, sound, features, etc? Hokay then, here we go:
Controls: "Not that you need to practice too much, as throwing a dart comes down to aiming with the pointer, holding a button and making a throwing motion. Unless you have wild muscle spasms mid-toss you’ll likely hit very close to where you aimed. So skillful."
Audio/visuals: "There’s a neat jig of a theme song, but actually playing darts is a fairly silent affair. Instead of music, we get the ambient sounds of a restaurant’s slow lunch. Sound effects boil down to a swish, plokk and a ping. Serviceable, yes. Exciting or interesting? Pfft. There’s no widescreen support, and the only animation you’ll ever see is the dart flying across the room. No people, hands or anything like that."
And I'm going to assume you have eyes and can thus see the screenshots sprinkled throughout the review. It's a dart board with some darts.
Features: "there’s multiplayer support, it teaches you how to play five different games (501, Cricket, Around the Clock, Killers and Baseball)" "But hey, five games, right? Hope you like those five games a whole lot since there’s no Free Play option to let you use the board for some other game, or even practice." "No stat tracking. And while it teaches you how to play, the tutorials aren’t any more than reading a set of instructions."
The one and only time I suggest playing real darts: "You’re better off spending the money on a cheap dart board or, failing that, a few boxes of sharp pencils to throw at the wall."
