I'm thinking about going through with this sometime this fall. Anyone had major problems with HBC?

Like sean said go through a legitimate site like wiibrew.org and look for the hackmii installer. If thats the case its extremely unlikely anything could go wrong. It runs fine and still runs fine after going from 4.0 to 4.1 system update. Some exploits (twilight hack) might get patched with system updates but if you already have HBC on there its generally not gonna mess with it. Also wiibrew.org does not condone piracy in any way and is really only concerned with legitimate uses of homebrew.
Just stick with homebrew channel and programs you can run off it. Theres a lot of stuff that lets you mess with IOS files and all kinds of other stuff. Stay away from those. Homebrew channel is safe cause its basically a channel like any other and doesn't mess with the wii enough to have any possible problems. Ive heard of some people bricking there wii but it definitely wasn't from just installing HBC.
The only concern is that if your wii dies and is under warranty if they find you had homebrew channel on it they may consider your warranty void.
Yep and they'll charge you extra to fix it. I've got no issues with HBC; the only things I've run to date are GeckoOS (I've run Japanese Wii/Gamecube games and North American Gamecube games with generally good results) and SDLMAME (rough, but works for older arcade games).
I would caution you against attempting to launch any online component in a game not from your region without further research; I think there's issues with that sort of thing and you'll also need to be careful about running imports that prompt for a system update -- that can definitely brick your machine. Before importing anything see if you can determine if there's updates on the disc and workarounds for it. Nintendo titles will probably be the main source of this (I don't know if Disaster Day of Crisis has any or not).
For peace of mind, I really do recommend buying an import machine if possible; the only import games I'm willing to run are North American Gamecube games -- the whole firmware update/online component makes it all too messy for me to want to deal with.
I might not have to do this now, if that fan translation project of Fatal Frame works out. Well, I'd still need Disaster to come out in NA. Come on, Reggie, pleeeease?
