I've had my Gamecube since day 1 and never bothered to try Pikmin. I wasn't sure what the heck it even was. For some reason I thought it was like those old Lemmings games. I was playing smash bros Melee and realized i never got the Pikmin trophy. You need to have a saved file of Pikmin on your memory card to get it. Anyway how's Pikmin? Would you consider it a must have or not?

Okay then if I can find a copy I'll check it out. As old as it is it'll probably be hard to find. The description of the games on Wiki says they are real time strategy games. I was under the impression they were puzzle games. I guess I wasn't too informed.

My honest suggestion to you is to don't play the first as it's ok and all that but it has a poorly fleshed out radar that can get you easily lost/killed, and the day-night cycle is a poorly setup source of death(pikmin are food at dark) and aggravation.
Pikmin 2 adds 2 more of the little guys, a fully working radar, a time cycle that isn't just sadist, and you also have larger bosses and underground cool areas that also have time stop in there too, plus better fleshed out tactics. Pikmin2 sadly is also expensive, even today saw Lamestop still charging $40 for it while Pikmin is $10.
Edit: saw your second post, you're not entirely wrong. It is a rts of sorts, but it really is a puzzle/strategy game too in how you have to attack the enemies or environment to succeed. It's no rts like a warcraft or something in any means.
Definitely! if you have a wii, i recommend getting the New Play Control Version, of Pikmin 1. depending on where you live, NPC Pikmin 2 might not be released yet, so just get the GCN version. I agree with J.K. 2 is definitely the better of the two mostly because of the freedom it gives you in how you search for treasure

[/quote] Plus the first one had that 30 day time limit...ugh...
Ummm yeah, the Pikmin franchise is one of my favorite Nintendo properties of all time. the sequel is definitely better than the first but I still think you owe it to yourself to play both as they are outstanding experiences. While the Gamecube originals are great I highly recommend the New Play Control version of the first over its cube counterpart. That is of course considering you have a Wii.
Pikmin 1 is a great game for its own. The 30 day time limited served a purpose: you have to think what you are doing and what you better have to do first.
Pikmin 2 is just about not loosing too many Pikmin, since you get all the time you need and want. And losing many Pikmin in the dungeons you will. This game feels too much like trial'n error, the random dungeons will cause many situations, that are hard to master in good shape, forcing you (or at least me) to use the reset-feature like there were no end. It does feel like an action game than a rts/puzzle game as well. And the ship is annoying as hell...
Pikmin 2 has more of all of it but lost focus. For this reason, Pikmin 1 is as good as Pikmin 2.
I agree with Traxx, the first Pikmin game was full of charm and the story of rescuing Captain Olimar and discovering the pikmin was great. For someone who doesn't have all the time in the world to play games being able to play through in a week worked really well. The use of the pointer in the NPC version is terrific.
Once I had played it though I wasn't that fussed about a replay and Pikmin 2 really didn't sound that compelling so I passed on that one. I'm hoping Pikmin 3 will turn out to be something special and entice me to give it a go.
Honestly... I think the series is good but overrated. The concept is charming and the games are unique. They still aren't something I would pay a lot of money for though. It's a good idea to try Pikmin 1 first and see if you enjoy the series before shelling out for the more expensive Pikmin 2 on GameCube.
Personally, I preferred the first game over the second anyway. It felt more focused and the artificial time limit forced you to keep pushing forward instead of exploring every nook and cranny, so there was more incentive to go back later. The second game did add a lot of new and improved content but just didn't feel as "fresh".
Also want to echo the recommendations that you get the New Play Control versions for Wii instead of the GameCube ones. They can often be found for good prices, although Pikmin 2 hasn't yet been released as an NPC title in North America if that affects you. The downside with NPC versions is that they won't help finish off your Melee unlockables.

Agreed. Neat concept, but the games get boring quickly. Never thought there was enough variety to justify plonking down fifty buckaroos. The 2P modes of Pikmin 2 push it well ahead of its predecessor for me though. Fun game to play together, and perhaps more fun playing against each other. I hope Pikmin 3 finds a way to add 4-player versus, even if it has to be online.
I hated Pikmin when I first got it but now Pikmin 2 is my favorite. They're awsome games so I suggest it, as other people said though they're not for everyone.

Never had the opportunity or ambition to try multiplayer modes when I owned Pikmin 2, and have long since sold the game. The option to have 2 people sit down and play together does seem like a big improvement though - was there cooperative play, or only competitive?
Both. I don't remember playing co-op. Competitive was surprisingly fun. Kind of RTS-like, which I guess solo Pikmin is, too, though I didn't make the connection until trying head-to-head.
I enjoyed it, especially Pikmin 2...I'm still playing through it again. XD Dunno how other people are finding it boring...and the random dungeon generator thing I actually like. (and even though long and and somewhat boring (and annoying...), love the music for the final boss, lol)
