Topic: Are any of those cheap HDMI adapters any good?

I have been trying to play some games on my Wii I never got around to using the component cables in 480p and 16:9 mode and it looks BAD, really REALLY bad.

And yes, I know it's a 14 year old SD system, but this goes beyond that. I actually have component cables for my Sega Genesis and PS1, despite most of the games on those systems not even running at 480 but at 240.... and they look better.

It's not that the graphics are pixelated, or even blurry, they are..... blotchy. As if some kind of poor quality old de-pixelate emulator filter is being run over the whole screen or something. And yes, my TV is in game mode.

Only seems to be my Wii, my even older consoles that I got component cables for look better, and when I tried switching my Wii to 4:3 it still looked bad.

So now I am looking at those HDMI adapters. Thing is.... just about all of them are some insanely cheap Chinese product you can get from eBay or AliExpress or so. Are these even any decent at all? Would the produce an even WORSE image than my component cables? Or add lag. Or even risk shorting out my Wii or something?

And if not all of them are garbage (Because there definitely appear to be some trashy ones) there are any good ones, can someone recommend a specific one I should be looking for? There are so many generic/n-name ones on eBay and Amazon that it's impossible to sort through them.

And yes, I know there is a more permanent and professional solution, but I can't afford a $100 mod right now nor have the soldering skills to install it, I just want a temporarily cheap solution for now that is just going to be better than my component cables..... as long as it's not going to risk damaging my system.

I’ve got one and it works great. I used to use it and a cheap hdmi to vga adapter to play wii games on an old crt monitor. It looked great.

I don’t know how good it’ll look on your new TV - there are no fancy upscaling options - but I had no complaints with my setup...

I was hoping for people to give me recommendations for which ones are good or garbage, if any are good.

The one I got was called ‘wii2hdmi’.

@Cyber_Akuma Well, I don't know what kind of component cables you have for your Wii, but I'm using gold-plated ones, and with the graphics setting on 480p, and screen ratio to 16:9, the games look crystal clear and the picture is completely without any noise or other distracting artifacts.

Those cheap HDMI adapters don't give a better picture, and depending on the TV and the settings/upscaling abilities of your TV, the image could also get stretched, and there could be significant input lag, because of the double upscaling that will occur when using these, while a component cable of good quality will just display the native signal in its best quality, meaning there will be zero lag, and no upscaling.

But having said that, these adapters will not fry your Wii, so they're safe to use. You just might have to change some settings on your TV, to account for the more stretched image. Which occurs in any of the Wii's screen resolution settings, by the way.

Here's the best options for both component cable and HDMI adapter:

Another option to consider for connecting any older console to a modern screen is one of these:

Hope that helps.

I am actually using Nintendo's official component cables, so I doubt the cable is the issue.

That HDMI adapter seems the be the most generic one, and results apparently do vary between them, which is why I was asking about them.

I am seeing a lot of talk about a brand called Sewell, and that SUPPOSEDLY (I can't verify these claims though) a lot of Smash tournaments (I assume they mean Melee through a Wii) use them.

Although they also cost more than twice as most other brands.

I also tried setting up my WiiU (which fought me every step of the way) to see if it's any better, and there is still a small bit of that "Vaseline smeared on the screen" effect as I had someone describe it, but it is significantly reduced when I view the same scenes on my Wii and WiiU side-by-side.

But while that will work for this one game for now, it won't be viable for others in the future. So I still want to see what HDMI options if any viable ones I have for my Wii. (Not to mention it's a lot more annoying to bootup my WiiU for Wii games than just use my Wii that I also play GameCube games on).
