After reading many posts here I disregard my original post. It is a lot like a N64..

Seems like a console with huge potential, but hindered greatly by uncooperative third party developers.

A console that plays both Nintendo games and third party big hitters like Skyrim and Farcry would be the undisputed king of its generation.

It's hard to free fools from the chains they revere.

Agreed fully. Nintendo needs to get more aggresive, too.

Yeah, Ninty really needs to be more aggressive about getting third-parties onboard. They're relationship with indies seems to be improving, and that's defifinitely a step in the right direction, but even a few heavy hitters would go a long way.

I'm happy with my purchase, but I'd like to see Nintendo upgrade the WiiU and 3DS with a proper account system.

Presumably that was what Ubisoft was for before that didn't entirely work out. And publishing a lego game. As the lego games are very popular and Ubisoft is basically the most important 3rd party outside of EA, I'd say that's pretty good as long as similar things continue. Especially since Nintendo is also unintentionally on a quest to make japanese gaming besides themselves relevant again.

From what I've played I think it is a fun system. It lacks good quality 3rd party support, but will make up for it in first party support. I feel that the marketing is non existent for the Wii U and needs to be made a priority this season.

I've started to see more commercials for it. I don't often watch the tele but I've seen 2 ads for the WWHD so far. I often see ads in the paper for it too (Saturday/Sunday paper usually).

I always buy Nintendo machines for Nintendo games and have another console for all the other stuff and this has been the case since n64/ps1 days and as long as theres a good collection of 1st party games when all's said and done ill be happy.
But that's just me,nowadays the experiences that most people seem to want Nintendo dont really do in my view and without 3rd party support it's a hard gap to fill.

i only buy nintendo systems for nintendo 1st party games, i buy other consoles for multiplats. if nintendo went 3rd party, i wouldn't be bothered. less consoles to own, and i can play all my games on one system, nintendo and multiplats.

I think the Wii U is an excellent piece of hardware that has a lot of untapped potential. The gamepad is an excellent addition and I would like to see it implemented more. I like what the future holds for it, as this is probably the first time in many years that there are so many good, no, epic games coming out for it in such a short time span. (I've been gaming since N64).

The third party thing doesn't matter to me as much because the Wii U seems like it will be getting most of the games I'm interested in anyway, but it would be great if they could get more. Below are some games that I'm interested in for each next gen system that were either released in the last few months or are coming soon:

Wii U:

Sonic Lost World
New Super Mario World
ACIV (with or without DLC, I could care less)
Watch Dogs
Mario Kart 8
Smash Bros.
Donkey Kong
WWHD
Rayman Legends
Blacklist (Don't know why this version of the game got so much hate besides online, the campaign is keeping me plenty busy)
Arkham Orgins (lack of multiplayer doesn't bother me)
Zelda U

PS4:

KH3
Battlefront 3 (if it isn't announced for Wii U)

One:
Halo 5 (maybe)

So basically, Nintendo consoles have the games I usually want to play anyway, and I'm not shelling out $400-$500 for a console that has only a couple games I want to play.

The Wii U can definitely be a success story, but marketing has to improve to really convey to the public what the system is about (which I know they can do). I see ads for Pokemon X & Y spammed on Comedy Central and Adult Swim, they can do the same with Wii U. If the system fails, it will be Nintendo's fault and no one elses. A good marketing strategy will make it a success.

Ubisoft gets too much praise. I'd argue that Warner Bros are the most important third party to have on board. Both in terms of IP and quality

Great system so far. Very fun to play. Gamepad is amazing. Games are getting much better. With Batman and AC 4 coming and the big boy Watch Dogs, I think that is going to change everything for 3rd party games in a positive way.

I love my Wii U and I've enjoyed more games on it this year than I have on my PS3/360. Going forward it'll be all about the Wii U, as I'm not going to buy PS4/XBO until at least 2015 and will just buy Sony exclusives on PS3.

I think that Super Mario 3D World will help boost Wii U sales, but I expect a bigger increase when Mario Kart 8 releases.

I'm very disappointed with it. For a system released in 2012, it's pretty lacking to the competition it has that has been around since 2005.

The online components of the Wii U are pretty bad. The inability to directly invite friends to a game, or the lack of a proper chat system really hurt any potential there is to actually play games with people you know. In addition, Nintendo's refusal to add online multiplayer to their games is quite odd. Pikmin 3 has a very strong multiplayer component that would totally work online, yet there's no online component outside of a very basic leaderboard. Standards are higher for games then they ever were before. I'm paying $60 for the game, and not having online multiplayer when there's a multiplayer component in the game is unacceptable, especially when it wouldn't be hampered by being online. It also doesn't help that I also own a 360 and a PS3, where I have friends that own the few 3rd party games on the Wii U, thus making it hard for me to justify a Wii U purchase of any of those games when I can't play with them if I do so. We live in a much more connected age, and Nintendo seems so focused on making their online "Nintendo-ey" that they're forgetting to make it practical.

Also, and this is totally just my opinion, I think Nintendo is losing their magic touch when it comes to the home console games they're making. They clearly still have it with their portables; Fire Emblem: Awakening, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Pokémon x and Y, Animal Crossing, and more clearly show they still know how to make games. The problem is, standards for $60 games that are HD are higher. When I play a game on the Wii U, I'm expecting from Nintendo the things that are in vein with what I'm getting from its competition, at least when it comes to production values. But I really haven't found any of Nintendo's games on the Wii U to "wow" me yet. Pikmin 3 is easily the best game Nintendo has put out so far, but even then I wasn't particularly impressed with it. It's a fun game, but it doesn't compare to The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite, or GTA V when it comes to innovating the gaming landscape, in either gameplay or story. A part of this seems to stem from Nintendo not being used to HD development, as the constant game delays and lack of functions that have become standard in videogames indicate. Simply put, I was more impressed with Rayman Legends, Need For Speed: Most Wanted U, and Darksiders 2 more than I was with any of Nintendo's games.

Speaking of innovation, Nintendo seems to have no clue with what they should do with the Gamepad, the one thing that separates the system from its competition in a good way. None of Nintendo's games have used the gamepad in a way that makes it feel like it would only work on the system, outside of minigame collections, and their future line-up that we've seen doesn't help them out in this regard. Every game I've seen from them looks like something I've played before. Meanwhile, you have Ubisoft incorporating the gamepad in unique ways into full-scale games with ZombiU and Rayman Legends. Now, we can debate over the overall quality of those games, but the ideas within certainly worked and made the games feel special on the Wii U.

Pretty much the only thing the system has going for it for me is off-TV play, Nintendo games (which I'm finding lacking so far), and Rayman Legends (which is the best cooperative platformer I've ever played). The eShop is also well-structured, although it's also lacking some things that make it far behind the competition, like VC purchases being connected or buying digital games from the previous generation. I feel like the system was worth getting, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless if they are the most hardcore of hardcore Nintendo fans.

Awesome system, excellent games, and really cool gamepad component. Needs account system and more connectivity to 3DS.
