The developers preferred to develop for the playstaion because it used DVD which not only boosted sales but held more data than mini disc. Gamecube got screwed hard, teh Japanese developers stayed with the Playstation, and the few western devs nintendo had jumped ship as that part of the industry went with the xbox.
Because of this, I am not sure if Nintendo will ever get back to the glory days (Pre Gamecube) When every developer worked with Nintendo and Nintendo barely missed on any games except for Sony Exclusives.
The N64 had a far worse track record than the GameCube for 3rd parties.
While I dislike the saying I do feel there is a bit of truth in the Nintendo Gamers only buy Nintendo games ideal.
I've been hoping for some time to find a way to just banish them from the community, those type of fans are really bad for Nintendo. Like genuinely bad for the company in the long run. I kinda used to be that type of fan at points...but I was also a lucky kid whose parents could afford lots of games to buy me and my brother so I at least did get to play your...Prince of Persia reboots, your extreme sports games, your Everything or Nothing. Viewtiful Joe...De Blob...you know other random stuff. rayman 3? But I would've been that kid most likely if I wasn't lucky enough to get so many games and I've not gone quite as far into Nintendo's first party stuff since the economy went to crap and I've had to think about purchases. Kinda fitting that for a while those were consistently my best gaming experiences since...2003. Peak of the 360 around that time imo too. So I almost feel bad a little for people who stupidly limit their gaming experiences to Nintendo, or worse, mostly just Mario. And this is from someone whose been a Mario fan literally since before a lot of fans were born. Love Mario, but I don't play games, I don't play Nintendo to just play Mario. I wouldn't own a Wii U if I didn't have some interest in the 3rd party lineup (admittedly including Nintendo publishing stuff that are from 3rd party devs, but good on Nintendo for Bayonetta 2 and the like).
And honestly, Nintendo is a better company right now because of their failures catching up to them around the time of the 3DS launch. So I wouldn't mind in their current lineup, especially another (admittedly fairly awesome looking) Mario platformer in increasingly annoying annual release mode, just failing. Nintendo would be better off in the long run if that happened, similar to how Playstation is better off for their infamous failures early on with PS3.
But yeah, there are too many games to just spend your money on Nintendo. It is a stupid idea if you have any real respect for the industry as a whole. Outside of a Platinum developed game, I plan on getting 200+ dollars worth of games that aren't Nintendo in the next month and a half. Current idea is Ubisoft, Capcom, Sega, Atlus, indie indie indie indie indie. I like that idea. It feels fresh. My brother got Borderlands a while ago, probably try some of that too. Maybe GTA V later...
and it doesn't even matter for that point since Nintendo's Wii U titles look actually worthwhile and awesome and interesting next year. So Nintendo wins anyway so there's no reality where I am wrong. Awesome.

Nintendo going with cartridges is one of the worst decisions the company had ever made. Thir d parties hated the very rough and tumble nintendo of that era that controlled nearly everything and had no real competitor n the market that could stop nintendo's Tyranical winning. Remember Final Fantasy 7 was in development for the nintendo 64 before being moved. Sony's going with a CD format was such a simple move that gave half the industry a convenient escape route out of nintendo's hands.
I think most of us on this site were like that at some point, I stan'd Nintendo pretty damn hard durng the Gamecube and first part of the Wii era. Despote having all three consoles I spent most of my time with Nintendo Handhelds and consoles and my forum of choice was Nside. I would laugh at things like Halo and spend alot of time in the Metroid Prime esports community. (Gamefaqs can bit it, Nsider for life.)
Even now I'm pretty bored with my 360 (mostly just tired of this generation as whole) and the 3DS has been my go to. Even now I'll probably be grabbing at least three new 3DS games between now and december.
Xbox and Playstation's identity is defined by it's 3rd party software, exclusive or not. Most of these games are more violent and mature. You buy one or the other console so you get the best version of the 3rd party game.
Nintendo is defined by a plumber, a kid in a green hat and a yellow cat thing that shoots electricity. Some people think these games are immature compared to the 3rd party shooting games. But You buy these games because you know you're getting quality. Even the worst of these games tends to set a high bar for 3rd party. The 3rd party games for Nintendo are the ones that do the best tend to be games in a similar vein.
Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?

They could have developed for PC, they didn't have to wait for a console competitor other than sega.
And that was where western developers went, IIRC. But in Japan, PC gaming stopped being a big thing by that point, so I doubt a lot of them could've survived the switch to PC gaming.
I guess I would want to add that Nintendo doesn't have this problem with handhelds, just consoles. I feel Nintendo should spend time not on even really trying to get western style games, but attracting mature japanese style games. The reason I say this cause I feel this would be easier and its not like it would be impossible if Nintendo was willing to spend some money. I think the main problem is Nintendo isn't willing to pay these 3rd party pay to have their games on Nintendo consoles.
