I guess I'm not the only one. I do suffer sometimes when the game has to be played on the TV, instead of the Wii U pad.
Some random dude on Nintendo Life.
Toriel left for a while, so Freaky Fred took over her place!

Yep, I'm one of the few people who think the gamepad is absolutely essential. It's because the only time I have for gaming is while I'm on the exercise bike at night. Which is noway near a TV.
My kids played Adventure Time Explore the Dungeon because I don't know and Hello Kitty Cruisers and they said they had trouble when they tried to play off tv and couldn't figure it out but I didn't check those out myself.
It annoyed me that Lego City coulnd't be played off TV as well.....it really seems like that game should be able to played off TV. Unfortunately my copy of the game was ruined by kids taking it out of the case and cracking the disc so it doesnt' bother me anymore. It is a very good game though.
Of course I also think all games that can be played off TV should be playable with out the gamepad on the tv as well.
Mario Party 10 needs a tv. Best played with friends anyway.

The Wonderful 101 you can technically play on the GamePad but it's a pain. A bit of a pain if you're trying to play with the Pro Controller but more if you're trying to play off-TV. It really likes to sometimes have you look at what's happening in one view and alter it via another. It's great when you have it going but otherwise? ugh.
Shovel Knight you lose the Digger Diary. Not essential but I really liked that feature.
Wii Sports Club as others have mentioned, and for obvious reasons.
XType Plus, small little eShop title. Won't work at all on the GamePad. Definitely should but didn't last I checked.
In general though, most games will work but some will be a pain and a few won't work at all. Also games which lean heavily on using a map are perfectly playable but are better played on your TV. Wind Waker HD for example was so much better played with two screens. Because I'm used to the two screen Zelda and don't want to go back to diving into a menu to look at which rooms I missed every five seconds.
Game & Wario needs a TV for some games, but not others. Patchwork doesn't, for instance, and neither does Bird, but Pirate and Arrow do. (I don't remember what all the games are off hand, but TV-necessity can probably be said for about 50 percent of the game.)

I agree. Off-tv play is the best Gamepad feature, in my opinion. I really do enjoy using it.
Monster Hunter 3 does have off-tv play, you just have to access it through the main menu before starting the game. If the menu isn't visible on the gamepad (I can't recall), you can still play, you just have to memorize the button inputs to navigate to the Gamepad mode selection on the menu. Then the entire game is playable without a TV.

Luckily, I've already got through Windwaker and never even tried it on a TV.

I just realised that Lego City Undercover needs to be played on a TV.
Are there any others that suffer this silly limitation? I only really play on the gamepad so it's worth knowing in case I happen to buy one of them.
Why is that a silly limitation? Lego City uses dual screens, and the dual screen setup is really crucial to the idea of the game. Affordable Space Adventures will also require dual screens.

Well I haven't played it so I can't comment on how crucial it is. I was just getting my impressions from the trailers I'd seen.

The Lego city Devs made it so its only on tv. It isn't a limitation.
Of course it is. It means you can't play the game in as many ways. That's a limit of the game. Granted, it might be competing with other limitations (assuming the game relies heavily on the gamepad), but it still counts as a limitation because it means I won't get a chance to play it.
