I want to see them buy back Banjo Kazooie and have that as their collectathon series. Modern Nintendo seem like they could do a much better job with it than modern Rare ever could, and it'd avoid annoying certain people by using Mario or Donkey Kong or some other non collectathon IP instead.
How do you expect Nintendo to get Banjo Kazooie back from Microsoft?

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Let me rephrase the question then:
Do you think that Microsoft is going to be willing to sell it?

I think they'd be happy to cut their loses with Rare and sell them.

Anything is possible... with enough money.

And RARE is but a shadow of it's former self from Nintendo's glory days. Most all of the developers disbanded, so what you have left is the intellectual property rights. Without the masterful team behind it, the brand IP is hardly worth fighting over.
Yes, Nintendo selling off RARE was IMO a stupid business move in the long run. However, I don't know the nitty gritty financial details, and the moneys they recieved for the fledgling studio may have helped Nintendo stay afloat going into the Game Cube era. Who knows what great titles may have gotten greenlit on the Cube had RARE not been sold off. But we can't speculate and rewrite history.
Several of the great N64 titles got remade on XBLA, some of them good, some of them watered down compared to the originals. We also got a nice port of Diddy Kong Racing on the Nintendo DS, proof that the studios were at least able to cooperate on the handheld front which Microsoft did not have a leg in. Sure a "Banjo Twee" title would have been awesome, but don't bet on it coming to a Nitnendo console any time soon.

Nintendo never owned Rare, they bought a 49% stake back in the early 90's. As a result, they developed exclusively for Nintendo for the time being. Rare was never part of another company until Microsoft bought the entire company in 2002.
The GBA games by Rare whilst under Microsoft was an initiative by Rare, they made a deal with Microsoft and THQ, since Microsoft wasn't and still isn't participating in the handheld market, I guess they didn't really care.

True, Donkey Kong 64 is. But it wasn't 100% popular partly cause of that. People said it didn't quite feel like a Donkey Kong game rather than a Banjo Kazooie clone.
As for the Banjo Kazooie rights... all Nintendo needs is the IP. Most good Rare staff have left, so Nintendo could then hire them back outside of the Banjo Kazooie IP deal.

Donkey Kong 64 is the epitome of a collectathon.
Word. It is a good game. I need to replay my DK64 game cart sometime. I previously got stuck at the second boss with Diddy, about ten years ago. I bought a secondhand strategy guide but never got back to it. My N64 recently developed a problem of voltage drooping off and crashing, but I replaced the power supply and it's rock solid again.
True it doesn't feel like Donkey Kong country, any more than Mario 64 feels like Mario World.

Tbh by the time Ninty sold their share of Rare they were done imo, looking at their planned NGC games (Star Fox Adventures, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo) they were all decent but underwhelming when eventually released and even before the sale their some of their best talent had left them already and made the excellent Time Splitter games.
There is a good article I read (but can't remember where though) and what happened was Microsoft flat out tried to buy Ninty which led to them going pretty much "What? No!" so Microsoft then set their sights on Rare instead. Ninty had an option to flat by Rare but with them Microsoft pushign up their price and Rare starting to fade they let them go. Apparently former Rare people say the difference between working for Ninty and Microsoft is Ninty will suggest things to do and Microsoft will tell you what to do.
If it was released on a Nintendo system, it would rock. Sorry, I'm not buying the Crapbox One just to play another Banjo game. I've still got Kazoie and Twoie on my N64.

Donkey Kong 64 is the epitome of a collectathon.
I never really enjoyed it that much, there was too much of a focus on mini games and not enough on the main gameplay. Hell, you couldn't even beat the game without beating Donkey Kong and Jetpac, and I could never beat the former, so I was stuck because I wasn't skilled at something not part of the regular game. That's pretty bad game design.
Spyro Year of the Dragon and Ty the Tasmanian Tiger did the mini games better, I liked those games.
I wouldn't mind an Xbox One Banjo-Kazooie game if it's done right but I don't think Microsoft can do it right, they're not exactly known for making good platformers and they don't really like making cartoony games. What they've done with Nuts and Bolts says a lot, they tried to "reinvent" the IP for Microsoft's fanbase and it failed miserably. Even if they made it a collectathon like the older ones, they'd most likely fail again.

Yes, because Nintendo knows that to make the best games, the devs need a little bit of freedom. Amazing they really trust the 2nd party devs a lot with their IP, but the games are always magical and worth it somehow.
I can kind of understand why we haven't seen one lately. Nintendo probably trended away from them because a linear platformer allowed them to design levels that focused more on platforming skill. So Mario and Donkey Kong moved more towards 3D Land and Returns style. They could have the games exist as a separate style of those games, but I think they feel like it might overshadow the main games which they view as being more definitive. So I think their best options would be a new IP or a new spinoff, and since it's either to come up with a spinoff than a completely new IP, that seems like the best route.
In particular, I think Rosalina is a good candidate for this kind of spinoff. She already has an established game universe which fits the "spirit" of collectathon games, they can simply retool Galaxy to give her the starring role. Gameplay wise, I think they should take cues from older games like 64 and Sunshine and make the levels more explorable and less linear, more like Honeyhive or Beach Bowl Galaxy. Keep the episode format to provide a sense of direction in the levels (and also keep the short story arcs), but also add in Green Stars to encourage open exploration, as well as Prankster Comets and Purple Coins for more of a challenge. They could color code the stars based on how they're obtained to avoid confusion, maybe Gold for episodic stars, Green for hidden stars (like they always are), Red for Prankster Comets, and Purple for Purple Coins.

Yes! This would be awesome! They already made a spinoff game based on Princess Peach, playing on the female sensibilities and emotion. Rosalina is even better because of her mysterious back story and not being a complete bimbo like Peach. Instead of rescuing Toads, Rosalina would be freeing Lumas.

Please no, I'm sick of kidnap plots, they're really repetitive and boring. I'd like to see a plot more in line with Galaxy's, an exciting, apocalyptic plot with a threatening villain and Rosalina has to explore the universe and find Power Stars to stop them.
Speaking of storyline, I'd like to see episodes that are well... episodes. One thing I liked about Sunshine (and Galaxy in some levels) is that the levels had a sort of story arc, several episodes involved helping the NPCs with their problems and as you progressed, you started cleaning up the level and more of it started to open up, and future episodes tended to play off what happened in older ones. This makes the episodes a lot more engaging and meaningful, and I'd like them to continue that.
