They announced it over a year ago and still nothing. I don't count Brain Age because DS VC was announced for NA Nintendo Direct and NA never got the game. Did they forget or change their mind?
Oh I didn't know NA didn't get Brain Training. At the time of release it was mentioned as some sort of trial run with the service not yet ready to launch. Given Nintendo's attitude to VC, we could be waiting quite a while longer.
Among the many forgotten promises, with the achievement system, 2 Gamepad compatibility, and SMT X FE. We can cross Flipnote Studio 3D off that list, though!

When was that promised?
I just remember reading this article back when that was my main site.
EDIT: fixed the link.
EDIT Again: I actually clicked the link for the source, and realized that the article itself was incredibly misleading. Don't mind me...

Details on the actual approach are rather vague so I consider that Nintendo has already done that in the form of certain games having ingame "achievements". A few exclusive examples include:
Bayonetta 2
The Wonderful 101
Hyrule Warriors
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
Sure it's not like your typical Xbox achievements or PSN trophies but it can still count. Also for gathering a list for all "achievements" unlocked across games, Nintendo's online infrastructure would need to be better (i.e. along the idea of unified account system).
Its pretty messed up because there's various DS games I would love to try and play on Wii U. I don't feel like hunting them down and playing them on my 3DS.
I was wondering this myself. I can't say I find Brain Training very interesting, but I haven't bothered to delete it yet. I suspect the number of games that work well with screens separated is smaller than they thought and/or they figured demand would be higher for Game Boy Advance and Wii.
They should do the same thing they did with Wii games on Wii U and have downloadable DS games on the 3DS.
I really wish they would do this and don't know why they haven't.
I was actually thinking this just the other day. I would not be surprised if they started doing this sometime in the future, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
I was reading a statement from Nintendo where they were asked about the "pros and cons of drip feeding VC". They said, and I'm paraphrasing, "There are no pros and cons, this is just the process and this is just how long it takes with the resources we have available". So basically they were saying they're not intentionally drip feeding, they're just releasing them as they're made and this is how long it takes right now. Not what people wanna hear, I'm sure, but it's something that should be taken into account.
Now, that doesn't explain why NoA is slack on releasing already finished VC games other regions already have, of course. DKC trilogy, Fire Emblem Sacred Stones and DS games just to name a few. I have a theory though, and that is that each region is given a list of VC games available to release and when they'll be ready, and each region decides which games to hold, and which to release when. NoA might be conservatively holding a few aces up their sleeve, so that in the event of a dry couple week period they can drop a biggie on the eShop.
That's the only explanation I can think of. I mean, I know a lot of people think they just "don't care" but I'm confident there's a reason behind everything, even if we don't know what that is. There's no logic in not releasing a finished game that is approved for the region, so II think it's just a matter of strategizing the release schedule on a macro level. Nintendo is well known for holding back finished games and shuffling release schedules to maximize impact of each game. It's quite possible that's what's going on here.
