If my memory serves, when playing OFF-TV the GamePad is not used as a touch screen.

But we're talking about the 3DS replacing the Gamepad, not using it just for off-TV play.
@Dipper723 Sorry, your post made it seem like you thought the Gamepad received the same video feed. A misunderstanding on my part.

Nope, I meant the buttons under the analog sticks. Assigning them to the touchscreen would bad idea because, as I said, the 3DS' sreen isn't wide-screen like the Gamepad's.

Actually, the topscreen of the 3DS is widescreen. It has a 15:9 aspect ratio. Not the same as the Gamepad, but it only needs very small black borders to show the same picture. It does have half the resolution of the Gamepad, but it still looks decent.

But it's not a touchscreen.

But it would work for offscreen gaming. Even with the wrong aspect ratio on the touch screen you could perfectly navigate with that, black borders on the touch screen don't matter for control.

The New 3DS doesn't have enough of an install base for there to be a reason to offer a GamePad-less Wii U. If it was all 3DSs then it could work as they wouldn't need to worry as much. Rather than putting R&D into a smaller GamePad why wouldn't they just keep the current one. The reason why people don't want the GamePad has nothing to do with the size of the GamePad, it has to do with the lack of uses the GamePad has. I think most people would enjoy the GamePad if they got to use it in real life situations, not demo kiosks. Nintendo needs to continue to focus on Games. Games is what the system will be known for and how they need to build up their legacy. Just look at the GameCube, it is considered one of Nintendo's greatest consoles in spite of not selling well. If Nintendo keeps their legacy of good games and doesn't do another Wii (far out idea that limited developers to much) then they will see success. It seems now more than ever it is the previous generation that sells the next, just look at the PS3-PS4.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I doubt that. Most games that use the Gamepad are designed around having 6.2'' of real estate. Shrinking it to less than 3.5'' AND 1/4th of the resolution won't make for a comfortable experience. Just imagine having WWHD's Gamepad HUD on the 3DS' touchscreen.

@Jmaster But I don't even use the GamePad that much. I don't do OFF-TV play and I play with the Wii U pro controller always, if possible. I only use the GamePad because the system still forces me to use it for things like setting up and for very few games. I also used it as a map for Pikmin 3. I think a New Nintendo 3DS could do all that, and people who want the bigger screen and resolution could go for the GamePad. As a matter of fact, Nintendo said they wanted to use Nintendo 3DS as a Wii U controller, the New Nintendo 3DS makes that easier than ever.

I really don't like the navigation bar of Nintendo Life continuously reappearing while browsing!!

@VanillaLake We're talking about the New 3DS completely replacing the Gamepad to the point that it doesn't have to be included with the system anymore, and whether that's technically possible. How you or I use the Gamepad doesn't matter, to replace the Gamepad the New 3DS would have to be able to do EVERYTHING the Gamepad does, which it's not.

When did they say that?

Also why would you be more interested in using the Tiny 3DS screens rather than the GamePad screen? Wii U Games are designed for GamePad size touch controls, the 3DS touch screen isn't as accurate as the Wii U screen because of the size. There is little to no reason why someone would want to use the 3DS instead of the GamePad.

Yeah, I agree to some extent with you. I want the New 3DS to be an optional controller like the Wii U pro controller, that's it. When I bought the Wii U I loved the GamePad but when I started playing I starting disliking it for a number of reasons, too big, too heavy, crappy battery life and too separated buttons for fighting games (Tekken). I don't pay much attention to its screen so I wouldn't mind using a New Nintendo 3DS instead. It was useful as a map screen for Pikmin 3 but I'd be fine with a smaller screen for the map. Actually, I would prefer the maps to be displayed on the TV, and that is something that Nintendo recently added to Mario Kart 8. About when did Nintendo said that, I don't remember well, but I think I read that on Iwata Asks as a possibility when talking about Wii U and 3DS connection.

Yes but I mean being a Wii U controller, that's what makes sense to me. I know it's not exactly the same as the GamePad and you are right about that.

The game looks alright even on this resolution: http://pressthebuttons.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83452033569e20192a...

I do believe the New 3DS will act as a controller for first party Wii U games to come, especially multiplayer games. Maybe it will be a standard in the Wii U Lite or something...
However, I don't think the 3DS would replace the GamePad completely. As JMaster said, the resolution will have to be reduced for the 3DS' smaller screens, which would make things ugly; I mean, if the 3DS is increasing the resolution of DS games and makes them look like a baby's face after playing with water ink for 30 minutes I'm not sure scaled down resolutions would look nice as well. We also have the absence of clickabke sticks, and the inconvenience of circle pads compared to analogue sticks.
That said, it might be considered, but I doubt it'll reach the final stage...

God first.

Also the GamePad screen is whitish, another thing I dislike because blacks are not black. And some games looks pixelated (New Super Mario Bros. U comes to my mind). I like Wii U but I couldn't care less for the GamePad, honestly. I find it useful for browsing the Internet though, but then it's just a tablet.

@VanillaLake As in Smash? If that's what you mean, you should've clarified earlier! As I said before, having some games support the N3DS as an alternative controller is perfectly possible!
@SuperWiiU now imagine playing that on the 3DS' tiny screen with borders...

That's true, the GamePad analogue sticks are much more comfortable than the 3DS analogue buttons. But anyway, I use the Wii U pro controller that has the same analogue sticks than the GamePad so that might be a reason why I don't miss the GamePad for playing at all.

@JMaster Yeah, New Nintendo 3DS would be an optional controller, anyway. I think it would be a welcome feature as an option! (I don't have Smash).

Neither does the GamePad. The GamePad is only 480p, while Wii U games are 720p and 1080p.

Perhaps you have never played a Wii U game, but the Gamepad is a secondary screen with its own rendered content. For Wii U games, the content is optimized for the 480p Gamepad. The screen and Gamepad content is not automatically interchangeable, it must be explicitly be supported by the game.
