@Grumblevolcano I was just about to post how confusing this is.
North America:
Europe:
Since when does fancy have different meanings on both continents? Why not use the terms of the EU side which are perfectly clear?
And why would people vote for suits, black ties and stuff anyway?
@shani I live in Canada and I can't recall hearing of the term fancy dress party before. It at least isn't used much here.
And fancy is usually used to describe formal clothing. Is it ever used that way in Europe?
I think the NA names are based on the Japanese ones which worked well in NA too.
In Japanese it is おしゃれ which means fancy or stylish and コスプレ or cosplay/costumes.
Anyways I'm pleasantly surprised with the results, I lost so many of my matches and heard the same from several others that I was certain costumes were going to get the win percentage.

A costume party (American English) or a fancy dress party (British English) is a type of party, common mainly in contemporary Western culture, where guests dress up in costumes.
Actually, at first I also thought fancy would mean formal clothing but that's probably because I watch too many US shows. ^^ So when I saw the names in-game, I assumed I was wrong, because it's pretty clear what "black tie" means. That's what I meant with "the EU terms were perfectly clear".
And since the European name doesn't say anything about costumes, I presumed that Marie's side would mean anything else than formal clothing. I hate formal clothing, it's so uncomfortable to wear! And I don't like the looks of it too, that's why I usually avoid all the dress shirts in Splatoon.
But the thing is: I also hate wearing costumes, for the same reasons!
Doesn't mean I haven't done both (costumes and suits), but from my perspective, it would've made more sense to have one of them against normal clothing.
If the EU Splatfest theme was" Black tie vs. costume", I seriously would've gotten in trouble. ^^ Although I probably would've picked the same side because of the ink colour.
@shani ah, I see. I always find it interesting to learn about differences in language with different areas. Even in North America there are some (usually small) differences in English between Canada and the US.
And then there are even differences that relate to the area of a country with some different words and dialects as well.
Personally I'm not really one for dressing up in costumes, but I like to wear formal clothing and I've gone to some formal dances as well.
Aaaaaahhhhh!
Today I thought it would be a good idea to update my Splatoon backup that I have on a separate USB stick, along with backups of all the other important games (XCX, MM, ASA, etc).
When I remembered that you can't copy just the save data but always have to copy everything related to Splatoon, I thought I found a clever solution:
I went into my backup and deleted everything but the save data (and the shared save data). Then I copied it into the system memory.
But guess what - the Wii U's data management must be designed by squidiots! It didn't just overwrite the save data on the system memory with the save data from my backup USB stick. No, it also "overwrote" the game and update data with their counterparts on the USB stick - namely, nothing!
That's right. Instead of just copying the save data over the existing save data (and leaving the game and update data alone), it also erased the game and update data because there was no counterpart on the backup. Who would design it like that? Argh.
Just imagine for a second this was the default behaviour on your PC: when you overwrite an existing folder with another one, everything that's not a match in the existing folder would be automatically deleted. Pure madness! ^^
And while I'm at it: I really hope the NX or whatever they'll end up calling it will have an internal SSD. Everything else would be unacceptable. It's just annoying how long it takes to get from one menu to the other on the Wii U, especially if you're used to something else from your PC. Meh.
Now I'm redownloading the whole game and hope I can get everything back together...
@shani Aw man, that sucks. And yeah, the Wii U's management system is rather limited which can cause issues with your data. Hope you get everything back. By the way, couldn't you have just backed up EVERYTHING on the system memory instead of finding a way to isolate the save data... oh, wait. You have a digital copy of Splatoon so you'll also have to copy the game itself (which I'm presuming is huge).
Yeah, if you have your save data still intact then I think you'll be alright...
@Vee_Flames Yeah everything is back to normal, just had to redownload an reinstall Splatoon (1,7GB) and the update (0,5GB) data. Just kept me from playing in a rotation that I would've liked.
My GOTY? Legend Of Zelda: Splat of the child. Ah no, I meant LoZ: Breath of the SPLATOOOON!
@Vee_Flames Yeah actually the first thing that I thought of was you, or more precisely your experience back then. ^^ I thought "omg I hope this doesn't screw up my savegame", because every time I chose the USB stick in data management, it said "unnecessary data found" (and I ignored it, probably some duplicate).
But the console apparently put everything back together the way it's supposed to be.
Lesson learned, never copy the save data without the game and update data, it's not worth it.
@Megapokepaul - Depends on what abilities you prefer. Take the time to scan through what you already own; look at the main abilities and the branding and you might find something that appeals to you.

Retired Palutena Gem Provider. Mario Maker Levels
Astonishing! I just went from A 3 to A 97 with 9 wins in a row before the rotation changed.
There were some pretty awesome plays in there, wish I had recorded this. :/
@Megapokepaul: Hehe, but don't you want to reach S+?
With another win yesterday I made it back to A+, then won 2/4 games, which makes 12/14 wins for this week so far. Now I can finally work on reaching S, the last time I got pretty close.
Ranking down is annoying, but I accepted it as part of the game a long time ago. Ultimately, I always managed to get back up again, it's just a matter of time.
However, I made a surprising discovery recently.
A week ago, when I wanted do update my backup USB-stick - and temporarily screwed up my install and had to redownload the game - I looked at the date of the savegame on the backup stick and was curious. So after copying my current save on another stick, I booted the game from the backup stick.
And to my surprise, the rank is saved on the save data! In that backup, I was actually A 50-something, while I was A- 80-something in my current save. It would've been intriguing to keep the older save, but my gear was very different (had some great rerolls after the Spongebob Splatfest) and that older save didn't have all those new weapons from Sheldon's Picks.
So I continued with my A- save without any regret and replaced the old A savegame with the A- savegame on the backup stick.
But the thing is, after that I think I played with less pressure. I don't want to savescum but somehow just knowing that I could theoretically load a backup in case I screw up my rank seems to subconsciously calm me down when I'm in the 90's or just need one game to rank up (and usually lose that game).
TLDR; You could just make a backup of your S92 savegame and then never(!) restore it. But maybe it will help take away the pressure or fear of ranking down.
@shani i don't know about this save scumming method , heard and read about it 5/4 month after splatoon came out but never tried it . I really don't like messing around with my wii u cause if something ever happens or if i make a mistake there is no customer service in Lebanon , and the stores that pretend to repair it just format it and act like everything is working properly again .......Im looking at some videos on youtube , and might try it out once i muster the courage !
