@DarthNocturnal my mistake! And yes that would be a pretty great spinoff. I wonder if they'd ever go for it

What we need is a Mr. L game.
@meleebrawler Luigi was loudmouthed in the previous games? That's new to me. In TTYD he may have talked a lot but that's because he actually did something while not depending on Mario, and that's a really good thing. The same thing could be said about Luigi in Super as well.

God first.

I get that the original was trying to establish a personality for Luigi in a way no previous game ever did (also because Luigi's Mansion was likely in development at the time, or at least planned). His complaints in that game aren't projected towards Mario much, being mostly reserved for his diary. But I can let that slide, since that is what a diary is for, after all.

He is at his worst in Thousand-Year Door; seeing that, it's not at all surprising that Mario didn't bring Luigi with him to Isle Delfino after being rescued from the mansion: he knew he wouldn't hear the end of it for weeks. Luigi glosses over the physical, emotional and financial harm he causes most of his sidekicks just to impress his big brother, and that just doesn't sit well with me at all.

And in Super, he admittedly mellows out considerably (when he's himself), since he is after all adventuring with his bro, which as Dream Team is happy to spell out for us, is all he really wants.

tl,dr: His old paper persona may have had some purpose and justification in the past, but that still doesn't mean I like it, and there's little reason for him to keep acting that way these days.

Alone, a force. Together, a force of nature.

From reading various accounts this game is quite short. It only takes 20 hours to complete. that's shorter than the previous Paper Mario games. TTYD takes just short of 50 hours on average to complete.

Talk or no talk, I still much preferred Sticker Star's modest Luigi to the loudmouthed, whiny tryhard of previous games.

As for Bowser with a cape, how is that supposed to work when one has a spiny shell on their back? Wouldn't it just get caught or tear if he tried to do something like sit down. Plus, it doesn't really fit his character, unless you're willing to let the black paint turn him into Dark Lord #3.

Sticker Star's Luigi wasn't even a character. He was a background icon.

Crunchii obtrained the true ending in a week, so it is indeed not a very long game. Probably longer than Sticker Star, but shorter than TTYD for sure. I think this is a general trend observed in the Wii U, with Nintendo having troubles with modern graphic engines that are very demanding in the modeling and animations.

So far I already like it more than sticker star. The game actually tries building a world through the introduction sections rather than saying "it's bowser go Get him". It has a ton more personality than sticker star in just the beginning than all of sticker star.

The writing is very cute. They definitely have the potential to build a truly great narrative if they want to in the future, if this game is anything to go by.

Not sure how damage works though, without numbers a worn out shoe can still kill a shy guy if you time it right.

But anyway, just saying my initial impressions are very favorable

The underlying structure is still clearly based on HP, they even show up in the Larry fight as he regains 999 HP, it's just that this time they don't want you to know how much damage you deal to the foes and how many HP they have, which is not really understandable since Mario still has HP and damage indicators... my guess is that the paint mechanism is quite complex and leads to a quite wide range of amount of damage dealt by a single attack. if it was shown to the public, this might have been so complex it would have risked to be confusing, but of course I would have been glad to see all the numbers, and I don't think the kids fear them, at most they would have ignored them.

I hope the official Japanese guide will give us all the numbers, otherwise only in-game code will be able to help us.

At least individual health bars are back in the form of the color drained from the enemies.

just lewl @ Larry just casually posing on a train that is headed straight towards Mario and the Toads. He's so cheeky and clearly doesn't care.

@TomJ I think this is a problem we all have when we rely too much on early gameplay footage and on what Nintendo wants to show us. In my opinion this game was presented awfully at the beginning. Both the Nintendo Direct and the E3 presentation apparently wanted to stress that this was Sticker Star 2 without showing the improvements - they even avoided to say what the Hammer Scraps did in the E3 presentation! In that presentation, instead of looking at some unique and interesting settings that are in the game, we mainly saw a beach setting with plenty of generic Toads without particular outfits except for one, and a very small part of a the Crimsom Tower with a caveman Morton that had nothing to do with the Morton of the SMB3 manual and, of course, was overpowered until you used a specific Thing Card. And you couldn't use Enemy Cards.
It almost seemed as if they wanted to lower expectations below 0 so that maybe the actual game would have been better received. I really hope this is not the case, as it would have been playing with fire.

I'll see what the game is like when I'll play it, but I think we should all rely less and less on early gameplay videos in making a preliminary judgement on Nintendo games from now on, because in my opinion with Color Splash Nintendo has shown how absymal it can be at showing its upcoming games...

Didn't even realise the game is coming out this soon. I'll pre-order it, but I'm knee-deep in The Witcher 3, so I'll see when I have time to play this. I really want to, but I can't stop playing The Witcher either. My weekend last two days longer this week, so we'll see.

It looks as though Nintendo UK Online Store preorders may be delayed, it says dispatch date of 7th October.

I'm having a fun time with the game. If they keep going in this direction maybe we'll get a game closer to the originals soon enough. Even if they aren't epic RPGs, it could at least transform into funny action romps with interesting settings.

Also the music is very good. Bouncy and fun

Surely this must be a joke right?

Unfortunately, it's not a joke. We vented our disgust about it last week.

I was checking my bank account this evening and I've a pending payment for Paper Mario: ColoUr Splash from Base.com. So it's possibly shipping tomorrow. The review embargo by the way as a matter of interest ends tomorrow at 4PM BST. So it's a race against time, if it's shipping tomorrow it'll be gone before 4PM. I wanted to see reviews before fully making up my mind. I'll probably keep the order regardless really, I'm that desperate for a game. Even if there is a few things that bothers me about it, e.g. Sticker Star template, endless Toads, short game, that stupid wrong spelling of ColoUr, and more besides.

We've discussed it, but it reminds me of an art project for a high school student. Done the night before it was due.

@TomJ By the way, I also agree with you on the hate part. We might not agree with Miyamoto, but in my opinion one thing is disagreeing, even strongly, with his positions on what the Paper Mario games should be focused on, one thing is hating on a person. Since we are talking about games, I find hating as being an extreme and negative reaction as well.

P.S.: maybe I see now what could be Miyamoto's point after looking at the pattern that the series was following:

Paper Mario - all in the Mushroom Kingdom, with its inhabitants
TTYD - outside of the Mushroom Kingdom, but still with some species of Mario's world or that fit with its style at least
SPM - almost always outside Mario's world with many species and characters that have little to nothing to do with Mario's world

Still I think that if his point was to focus more on Mario's world and characters, the way chosen was excessive.
