Might have something to do with the screwy eshop servers. Make sure you entered it right and if it still doesn't work wait a day or so and try again as it may just be a bug. If all else fails maybe get a new one from the store it was bought at.
Pretty sure that the Wii Shop cards aren't available anymore and that ontop of that they were the same cards anyway. When the 3DS first launched you could use Wii Shop cards for adding credit for quite a while before the eShop cards came out. Even now you can use eShop cards on the Wii Shop. So I don't think that will be the problem at all @JaxonH
I'd strongly suggest just waiting to see if it's not a server issue given how broken their servers have been. If it's still failing I would suggest trying to work it out between Nintendo and the store the card was purchased from. I suspect that the person at the counter didn't activate the card correctly... although don't go throwing that accusation around unless you're 100% sure it's not the eShop or something else.

An opinion is only respectable if it can be defended. Respect people, not opinions
An article I read about codes not working on eShop with a fix. I know it's referring to the 3DS eShop but the problem and fix could both apply to Wii U as well.
